When the siren sounds and the red truck rolls out, bystanders know the firefighters are en route to an emergency. In Nickel’s Day at the Firehouse, kids will follow the buffalo firefighter as they brave three different types of fires and a down live electrical wire. The buffalo’s work is not over when the hazards are contained, though. Readers will learn more responsibilities that come with the job, a job that many kids dream about becoming when they reach adulthood.

Firefighting is a tough job that requires intense training, quick thinking, courage, and teamwork. Nickel’s Day at the Firehouse captures all these moments and many more that kids might not realize their local heroes do. For example, next time when the snow blankets the ground, see if you notice the fire hydrants free from snow. If you can, know that firefighters were hard at work, keeping them accessible in case of an emergency.

Nickel’s Day at the Firehouse explores the tasks firefighters perform when they are not out on an emergency call. Nickel washes the trucks and the firehouse. He inspects all the gear to make sure it is in working order. The book also shows Nickel, the buffalo, training and exercising to tackle any job. If all that didn’t keep them busy enough, firefighters also visit with children, teaching them what to do in case of a fire: ”Stop, drop, and roll, and crawl down low.”

Rest assured, no matter the weather conditions, your local fire department is always ready to lend a helping hand. They love their community and want to keep everyone safe, which is lovingly captured in Nickel’s Day at the Firehouse.

Nickel’s Day at the Firehouse would be a great book to read during Fire Prevention Week (October) and when you are creating or practicing your fire escape plan. My recommended reading age is 2-7 years.

Chuck Donnelly is a firefighter from Cambridge, Massachusetts. His goal in writing this book is to teach children important values such as courage, teamwork, and kindness. Drawing from his experiences in the fire service, he hopes to inspire young readers to embrace these qualities.

I recommend reading Bull & Bear Build a Bright Future with Bonds, starting with its dictionary. Understanding key terms like municipal (mun) bond, diversify, bear and bull market, stocks, and maturity will assist readers in understanding the story more. Yes, the writer did a fabulous job weaving money terms, such as principal and yield, into the story; however, reviewing the words in the glossary might clear up any confusion for younger audiences going forth in this creative and informative story.

After familiarizing yourself with the glossary, it’s time to embark on a journey with Bull, Bear, and their friends in Moneyland. Adding a city map with creatively named streets and landmarks, such as Shareholder Square and Bond, Risk and Reward River, provides a unique opportunity to expand your financial knowledge. These names can serve as talking points for families and classrooms, inspiring readers to delve deeper into the world of finance. Plus, the map was just plain cute. Especially seeing the two friends ride down Wall Street on their bikes. Nice red helmet, Bear!

As we follow Bull and Bear to Moneyland Treasury, Eagle breaks down how bonds help our community and are a stable investment in this topsy-turvy economy. Help your city while earning interest… it was a no-brainer for Bear and Bull. It was, in their words, the best thing to do.

While Bull & Bear Build a Bright Future with Bonds is designed for children aged 5-10, it offers a fun and engaging learning experience for readers of all ages. The delightful characters and rhyming sentences, courtesy of the talented Craig Robinson, make learning about bonds an enjoyable experience. Share this book with your family or students and consider adding bonds to your portfolio.

Bull & Bear Build a Bright Future with Bonds did have an extensive glossary; however, kids might be puzzled by the financial sphere, which was not listed in the book’s dictionary. Also, while fans should recall the Golden Rule, this term might be foreign to new readers; therefore, I suggest adding it to the dictionary. All in all, Bull & Bear Build a Bright Future with Bonds does what the other books in the series do: it educates through creative storytelling and likable characters!

This picturesque child’s book explains mommy has to leave for work, but her love and thoughts are always with you.
In When Dad Travels for Work, we met a sweet boy whose father had to travel for his job. In When Mom Travels for Work, we meet a mom traveling down a curvy road while her daughter sleeps peacefully at home.

Sometimes dads must travel for work, and sometimes it is the mother. While a mom is away on business, the rest of the family must work as a team to tackle chores. They might not all be fun, but being kind, supportive, and helpful is important.

Thanks to technology, when a parent is away, you can see and talk to them with a few simple clicks. Facetime or Zoom calls bring families together when circumstances cause them to part.

When Mom Travels for Work explains to children that some parents must go away so they can provide for them. Their job pays for the food they eat, among other things. It also explains just because your mom is away on business, that doesn’t mean she isn’t thinking of you or missing you—quite the contrary. A parent’s love is constant no matter where they are resting their head at night. They count the minutes until they see you again.

The drawings were lovely again, like with When Dad Travels for Work. I love the warm tones and how they beautifully illustrate the love in this happy family.

**Remember to check out the illustrated maze before the title page or at the back of the book. It’s a fun mini game that children would adore navigating. Encourage them to start at “home” and travel down the winding roads to reach each destination on the map. Just watch out for motor vehicles!

If your 3 to 7-year-old has difficulty adjusting to mom working outside the home or with their parent having to go on a business trip, read them When Mom Travels for Work. It’s a story worth reading!

Even before the latest pandemic hit, healthcare workers work day in and day out, saving lives. During the pandemic, we gained a newfound respect for the healthcare industry and those who work in that field. We’ve seen them pushed to their max, but they keep fighting. Courtney Booth, the author, is correct—healthcare workers are heroes!

I’ve seen countless books on learning ABCs; however, this is the first I’ve noticed that focuses on healthcare workers. The picture book covers every job imaginable, from “A” for an anesthesiologist to “Y” for youth counselors. Under each letter and position, there’s a brief overview of what the job entails. For instance: “T is for transplant surgeons” informs children that these workers help kids and adults live longer by giving them new organs when they are sick. There wasn’t a specific job title that began with “Z.” The author expressed how they were zillions of other jobs not covered. The illustrations accompanying this letter and description mentioned a handful of other healthcare-related careers. 

The healthcare industry is vital to our survival. There are so many jobs that one can choose for their future career if they choose that path. But even if your child doesn’t want to enter that industry, Healthcare Heroes ABCs: A Journey Through the Alphabet with Your Healthcare Hero Team by Courtney Booth will give elementary school children a better understanding of what each job does (from A-Y). If you are a teacher reading this to your class, you might prompt your students to share if they have a family member who works as a healthcare worker. Maybe even consider a healthcare career day at school. 

Amazon’s recommended reading age is two-ten years (grade level: preschool-fifth). Learning the letters is more suitable for two and three-year-olds, while the information about each specific job would be ideal for school-age children. 

I recommend teachers share this book with students. I also hope parents buy this book for their child(ren).
