When Mom Travels for Work by Kristopher Goeden (Book Review)

WHEN MOM TRAVELS FOR WORKhelps kids understand why parents sometimes need to leave their loved ones when they travel for work. The story explains why parents work, what they do while they are gone, and how important their children are to them even when they’re away.

This picturesque child’s book explains mommy has to leave for work, but her love and thoughts are always with you.
In When Dad Travels for Work, we met a sweet boy whose father had to travel for his job. In When Mom Travels for Work, we meet a mom traveling down a curvy road while her daughter sleeps peacefully at home.

Sometimes dads must travel for work, and sometimes it is the mother. While a mom is away on business, the rest of the family must work as a team to tackle chores. They might not all be fun, but being kind, supportive, and helpful is important.

Thanks to technology, when a parent is away, you can see and talk to them with a few simple clicks. Facetime or Zoom calls bring families together when circumstances cause them to part.

When Mom Travels for Work explains to children that some parents must go away so they can provide for them. Their job pays for the food they eat, among other things. It also explains just because your mom is away on business, that doesn’t mean she isn’t thinking of you or missing you—quite the contrary. A parent’s love is constant no matter where they are resting their head at night. They count the minutes until they see you again.

The drawings were lovely again, like with When Dad Travels for Work. I love the warm tones and how they beautifully illustrate the love in this happy family.

**Remember to check out the illustrated maze before the title page or at the back of the book. It’s a fun mini game that children would adore navigating. Encourage them to start at “home” and travel down the winding roads to reach each destination on the map. Just watch out for motor vehicles!

If your 3 to 7-year-old has difficulty adjusting to mom working outside the home or with their parent having to go on a business trip, read them When Mom Travels for Work. It’s a story worth reading!

When Dad Travels for Work by Kristopher Goeden (Book Review)

WHEN DAD TRAVELS FOR WORK helps kids understand why parents sometimes need to leave their loved ones when they travel for work. The story explains why parents work, what they do while they are gone, and how important their children are to them even when they’re away.

For many parents, their job requires them to work outside the home. Sometimes, it even involves flying thousands of miles away. Often, they are gone for several days. When Dad Travels for Work by Kristopher James Goeden explains why parents work, what they do while they are gone, and how important their children are to them even when they’re away.

Parents must work to provide for their families: food, shelter, clothing, and more. While they are away, kids typically help out at home. The young boy in this picture book helped with everyday chores without complaint. He wheeled the trash bins to the road, mowed the grass, and made his bed. He did it with a smile on his face!

This charming story alerts children that a father misses his family dearly when he’s gone. Even though his body may be hundreds or thousands of miles away, his thoughts are with his family every second of every day.

When Dad Travels for Work shows a father’s love for his family and how this particular dad travels so he can provide for them. It shows the joy this loving family experiences when they are reunited. SWEET!

A parent’s need to travel for work can be challenging for little kids to adjust to. They may not understand why their parent must leave them. I encourage you to share this charming story with 2 to 8-year-olds who need help understanding a parent’s need to travel for work. It will also help a child realize their parent is missing them as much as they are missing their parent.

Remember to check out the illustrated maze before the title page or at the back of the book. It’s a fun mini game that children would adore navigating. Encourage them to start at “home” and travel down the winding roads to reach each destination on the map. Just watch out for motor vehicles!

KidVenture: Twelve Weeks to Midnight Blue by Steve Searfoss (Book Review)

Picture

Chance Sterling launches a pool cleaning business over the summer. Join Chance as he looks for new customers, discovers how much to charge them, takes on a business partner, recruits an employee, deals with difficult clients, and figures out how to make a profit. He has twelve weeks to reach his goal. Will he make it? Only if he takes some chances.

KidVenture stories are business adventures where kids figure out how to market their company, understand risk, and negotiate. Each chapter ends with a challenge, including business decisions, ethical dilemmas and interpersonal conflict for young readers to wrestle with. As the story progresses, the characters track revenue, costs, profit margin, and other key metrics which are explained in simple, fun ways that tie into the story.

Whether you are opening a roadside lemon stand, mowing grass, babysitting, or embarking on a larger-scale business, your child should read KidVenture: Twelve Weeks to Midnight Blue (Vol. 1) by Steve Searfoss.

When Steve Searfoss said, “Math is your friend,” he couldn’t have been more correct. In business, you need to understand key terms such as profit and loss, expenses, and venture capitalist. These words and many other words used in KidVenture: Twelve Weeks to Midnight Blue (Vol. 1) would be perfect glossary and spelling words for a classroom setting.

Extended Activity: Have your students create a flyer like Addie did and present it to the class. Homeschool students can also partake in this activity!

Math lesson: Steve Searfoss offers various scenarios in which Chance can make more money by gaining more customers or increasing rates. He also discusses unexpected expenses. It’s broken down in a simple format. Extend the math lesson by importing your own prices and have the students solve the equations.

KidVenture: Twelve Weeks to Midnight Blue (KidVenture Vol. 1) also offers numerous discussion questions at the end of each chapter. Example: “How could you get more leverage?” “Would you take on a new partner? Why?”
With all the possibilities for extended learning activities, I encourage ALL households and schools to add and use this book. It’s a great learning tool, plus the story is very entertaining. Even the illustrations are fantastic.
My score will be a 5, but I wish I could give it more. Outstanding job, Steve Searfoss.

I wrote my first KidVenture book after years of making up stories to teach my kids about business and economics. Whenever they’d ask how something works or why things were a certain way, I would say, “Let’s pretend you have a business that sells…” and off we’d go. What would start as a simple hypothetical to explain a concept would become an adventure spanning several days as my kids would come back with new questions which would spawn more plot twists. Rather than give them quick answers, I tried to create cliffhangers to get them to really think through an idea and make the experience as interactive as possible.

I try to bring that same spirit of fun, curiosity and challenge to each KidVenture book. That’s why every chapter ends with a dilemma and a set of questions. KidVenture books are fun for kids to read alone, and even more fun to read together and discuss. There are plenty of books where kids learn about being doctors and astronauts and firefighters. There are hardly any where they learn what it’s like to run small business. KidVenture is different. The companies the kids start are modest and simple, but the themes are serious and important.

I’m an entrepreneur who has started a half dozen or so businesses and have had my share of failures. My dad was an entrepreneur and as a kid I used to love asking him about his business and learning the ins and outs of what to do and not do. Mistakes make the best stories — and the best lessons. I wanted to write a business book that was realistic, where you get to see the characters stumble and wander and reset, the way entrepreneurs do in real life. Unlike most books and movies where business is portrayed as easy, where all you need is one good idea and the desire to be successful, the characters in KidVenture find that every day brings new problems to solve.

Introduction:

There were several fascinating animal facts in this section of Cracking The Harmony Code: Nature’s Surprising Secrets for Getting Along While Getting Your Way by Camilla Gray-Nelson. For example, I had no idea “ravens call their friends by name” or that “horses feel shame.” It makes you wonder how researchers discovered these two things.

Also found in this section, Camilla Gray-Nelson admits she’s failed many times over in life. However, she’s learned from her mishaps. In life, that’s how we move forward in a positive way. We learn from our failings/mistakes and strive not to make them again.

Part One & Part Two:

Trust is essential in any relationship. It’s the building block in any relationship. Without it, the foundation is not solid; therefore, harmony can not be achieved. It makes complete sense why trust is the first tier on The Harmony Pyramid in Cracking The Harmony Code: Nature’s Surprising Secrets for Getting Along While Getting Your Way.

This book discusses how to handle many personal and workplace obstacles.

*looking for a raise

*handle workplace drama

*underperforming workers

*losing authoritative control

*disrespectful child

*trouble with the spouse

*and the list goes on…

Some solutions to work or at-home problems are pretty much common sense. Be firm, but be fair. For example, if your child doesn’t listen, then restrict access to their favorite activity. Yelling, at home or at work, is never the answer. It does not yield the results you’re looking to achieve.

While not everything will apply to everyone, I think most people could benefit from one section or another. If you’re a new parent, recently married, or about to be either of those two things, check out the areas about how to keep things copacetic in your home. If you’re new to office life or in a management role, Camilla Gray-Nelson might have the key to help you achieve harmony in the office.

Please pick it up, and use it anytime you’re feeling unbalanced in life. Maybe it’ll get you back on track to living a more harmonious life.
