If you have a child or care for young children for a living, you know that children will not always be receptive to eating their fruits and vegetables. They cry, lock their lips, or spit the food out as soon as it touches their tongue. Eat A Rainbow, Ellie shows that colorful food (rainbow food) made Ellie’s body strong and fit, and it can do the same for you!

As Ellie demonstrated karate moves, the design team separated six food items under their corresponding colors. For example, under yellow, they had a block of cheese, corn, and four more food items. Under the purple header, the writer added eggplant, grapes, plus four more edible images. I loved how the illustrator matched Ellie’s karate sash and headband to the color on the page.

I adored how the writer and designer made the color words stand out from the rest of the text. I also liked the mixture of familiar food items and some unrecognizable ones. However, the shading of some foods didn’t fully portray the color they represented. The pear looked more white than yellow. The spaghetti and meatballs image didn’t scream “white foods.” I would’ve sliced the pineapple open like the watermelon picture so kids could see the yellow interior, not the orange outer covering. In doing so, it would’ve made more sense for “yellow.”

Extension activities: Have your family or class design a colorful plate using images from cooking-inspired magazines or by hand-drawing food items. Ask young readers if they can name foods that fall under the six colors represented in the story: red, yellow, orange, green, purple, and white. Make sure to check out the rainbow food song! Practice singing the lovely rainbow food tune!

I agree with Amazon’s recommended reading age: kids six years and under.

Life is busy, and eating nutritious foods at every meal can be a real struggle. Most families opt for take-out to save time and money and, let’s face it, the hassle of cooking. Besides those obstacles, people face dietary restrictions for themselves or a family member. Julia Matto’s daughter developed gluten sensitivity. “She had endured digestive issues and bloating, and her mood and concentration were off the charts.” Those same issues plagued Julia as well. As the author removed gluten from their diet, everything changed for the better! Julia discusses this and briefly explains gluten, including healthy food choices in the “Introduction.” Be sure and check it out!

The Magic of Gluten-Free Cooking contains breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert meal ideas; 20 recipes in all. There were anywhere from 4- 16 ingredients per recipe. In those ingredients, there were spices/seasonings that most households have on the ready: cinnamon, pepper, olive oil, (kosher) salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and vanilla extract. However, a trip to the grocery store will be necessary to complete most of the recipes. They require fresh herbs, fresh produce, and (possibly) a need to restock your cabinets.

I’m a visual person; if a food image looks scrumptious, I’ll be eager to prepare the food. Every recipe had a picture depicting what the food should roughly look like. “Red, White and Blue Berries Parfait with Greek Yogurt” looked divine. “Cranberry Apple Crisp” made my stomach growl. The “Oatmeal Raisin Cookies” and “Lemon Granita with Honey (Sicilian Lemon Ice)” activated my sweet tooth.

While the dessert portion of the book had mouth-watering pictures, the rest of the food portraits did not have me reaching for a fork. The “Steak and Eggs” and “Chicken Piccata” were visually unappealing, and the blueberry pancakes in “Blueberry Pancakes with Chicken Sausage and Avocado” looked burnt to a crisp.

Despite my feeling about the food presentations, I’m still inclined to try the recipes. The directions are easy to follow and introduce new foods into my diet.

If you are seeking recipes that fit into your gluten-free lifestyle or looking for healthier meal ideas, I encourage you to take a chance on The Magic of Gluten-Free Cooking: 20 Home Cooked-Meals Made Easy. Your gut will thank you!

The Moon in the Sky: Poems Your Kids Would Have Written (If Only They Could Write) by Bruce Shutts (Book Review)

THE MOON IN THE SKY: Poems your Kids Would Have Written (if only they could write) by Bruce Shutts

Children have the power to turn simple everyday tasks into moments of intrigue and laughter.

When getting dressed, they might just think:

“My pants are really easy
Since both my feet will fit.
And after I put both legs in,
I pull them up. That’s it!
But shirts are very tricky;
They have three holes, not two!
And if you pick the wrong one,
Your head just won’t go through!”

Delight in thirteen whimsical poems that capture the simple honesty of everyday childhood activities written from the perspective of three-to-six-year-olds. From getting dressed, eating snacks, or having stinky feet, you and your child will recognize yourself in these poems. Crafted to make you laugh, smile, and build memories with your kids.

Bruce Shutts’s poems were topics that kids and parents could absolutely relate to: getting dressed, car rides, walks outside, bathroom breaks, and much more.

We’ve all seen our children struggle with dressing themselves—head in armholes or backward attire. Most times, their first attempts are pretty humorous.

For many people, we use car seats or strollers quite regularly. Kids love the outdoors. Those poems were 100% accurate, including all the spills as well. I think my daughter dropped more crackers than what she ate.

I have sneaking suspicion that children will love “Picking My Nose” the most. While parents think it’s gross, kids think it’s hilarious. Face it, you know they have their finger up there most of their younger years. Amy Wummer’s image of the boy, looking out the corner of his eye while digging for gold, was cute and funny. I know I’ve caught my kids many times in the act. Eww!

The poems dealing with food could lead to asking your child or class what foods they like to eat for snack, lunch, or dinner.

I want to end my review by addressing “A Bug in the Bathroom.” My daughter screams at the top of her lungs when she spots a bug. That little girl, in the story, was so brave. Heck, I think she might be more courageous than some adults I know. 🙂

Bruce Shutts (author) and Amy Wummer (illustrator), you two made a great team. I loved every poem, and the drawings were spectacular too.

The author’s recommended age group is 3-7. I think that’s accurate.

Meet the Author:
Bruce Shutts has spent countless hours reading children’s picture books to his three children and five grandchildren over the past forty years. He also loves to create humorous poems for nearly every occasion he can imagine. Coupled with the fact that he often thinks and acts like a three-to-six-year-old, it makes his entrance into the world of children’s books a natural fit. He currently is retired with his wife of forty-five years and loves to travel, play golf, and (you guessed it) read books at night to his grandkids!
