Abigail Trench: A Novel of Washington’s Spy Ring by Randy Overbeck (Book Spotlight)

A vivid, propulsive Revolutionary-era thriller with the spy-craft verve of the streaming hit TURN: Washington’s Spies and the electricity of 1776’s New York that Hamilton lovers will recognize, this story is inspired by the lone female operative in Washington’s spy ring.

In occupied New York, a schoolteacher with everything to lose turns information into a weapon, threading between Redcoats and rebels as plots against Washington gather steam.

After rogue Redcoats assault her and strip her family’s Long Island farm, Abigail Trench fights to survive in New York City—tutoring in a high-ranking British officer’s Water Street household by day, navigating taverns, informants, and soldiers by night. Through Abigail’s keen eyes—and a counter-narrative following a principled British major—the novel renders the moral gray zones of occupation with gritty intimacy. As rumors swirl of a strike at General Washington, Abigail’s vantage inside upper-crust parlors and rough waterfront rooms makes her an ideal courier—and a target.

This historical thriller delivers high tension, textured world-building, and a captivating heroine who put it all on the line for freedom.

Special Note from the author about their….

Research has always been an integral part of my writing process. For my Haunted Shores Mysteries, I needed to learn about each new resort town—customs, activities, history, quirks, language, restaurants. For each novel, I also had to research the social issue each murder was connected to. For instance, I had to unpack essential elements of issues like racial injustice, human trafficking, and MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women).

But with my new title, a historical thriller entitled ABIGAIL TRENCH, I had to take my research skills to a new level. The novel tells the story of the lone female operative of Washington’s secret spy ring which helped win the Revolutionary War. But how do you research the world and time for a story when there is little or no resources to study? There are few buildings still standing as they were in 1776. It takes place in 1776 New York City, on streets and neighborhoods which bear little resemblance to the current city.

Also, I discovered there is precious little historical evidence of the Culper Ring member we know only as Agent 355. So I read everything I could about the Culper Ring, scoured histories about New York City during the American Revolution, did online research on colonial clothing, food, habits and customs. I studied period maps of New York City and paintings of famous figures of the time, on both sides of the struggle. And that was before I even started writing.

I needed to all that and more to help readers plunge into the dirty, difficult and dangerous world of colonial New York, a world of shifting alliances and allegiance, where even possessing rebel propaganda could get you arrested and even killed. I wanted readers to see, smell and feel what Abigail’s life was like as she made her way from her job as tutor to her role as spy. I’m anxious to see if readers enjoy traveling Abigail’s journey as much as I did creating it.

SHORT EXCERPT (800 words)

She and Jamie jerked backward. Abigail peered over Jamie’s shoulder, then relaxed. A tall civilian in a brown waistcoat stood there, a sad smile on his face.

“Robert?” she asked.

Jamie’s glance lurched from Abigail to the intruder. “Ya know this guy?”

Abigail said, “Jamie, you remember Robert Townsend, from the fire?”

Robert offered his hand. “You probably don’t recognize me without

the soot.”

Jamie shook it. “Molly told me ’bout that.”

“Robert, what are you doing here?”

He shrugged. “Same as you, I suspect. I heard about Nathan’s sentence. Had to see for myself.”

Jamie said, “This is a little late to ask but I thought British law required a trial.”

Robert shook his head. “It seems our King has decided we colonials don’t deserve such rights. They claim they can simply hang him as a spy.”

Movement at the north end of the camp halted their conversation. An officer came down the steps of the house. Older, clean-shaven, wearing a long red greatcoat fringed in dark blue, the officer adjusted his tricorn hat. His gaze swept the camp. On reflex, Abigail shrank back, as did Nathan and Robert.

Standing there, cringing behind a tent, helplessness swept over her

again. Back on Long Island, her efforts were useless against the rapist. At the execution of the couple, she was powerless. Now Nathan was going to be hanged, and she was simply going to watch.

“Bring out the prisoner,” the officer demanded.

Everyone in the camp stopped what they were doing and stared.

The soldiers stood and faced the gallows. The boys with the cannonballs froze. Silence fell.

The sentry by the greenhouse stepped through a small door and reemerged with a tall, blond man. Oh God, Nathan. Hands bound, he walked erect and unbowed. He didn’t look beaten. His face was unbloodied, clothes intact. Even from the distance, she could make out the scar on his face. He stopped in front of the officer. Nathan’s gaze moved across the camp, stopping on her side.

Very deliberately, Abigail slid off the hood of the cloak and shook out her hair. She stared and thought she saw recognition dawn in Nathan’s eyes. And concern.

“Does the convicted have any last request?” the officer announced in a formal manner.

Nathan’s voice was quiet but carried over the hushed camp. “If I’m going to meet my Maker, could I have a few minutes with a minister first?”

Abigail hoped this might give him precious minutes, perhaps enough for a miracle.

The officer’s response was quick. “Spies are not entitled to last rites.” He cleared his throat, but his next words came out phlegmy anyway. “Escort the prisoner to the gallows.”

The guard poked Nathan, and he stepped up onto the platform. The guard set his rifle down and placed the noose over his neck, cinching the knot tight. Abigail closed her eyes and swallowed hard.

Remembering she asked to be here, she opened them. Oh, kind, considerate man. She bit her lip.

The officer marched to the platform. “Nathan Hale, you have been convicted of high treason and spying against His Majesty and sentenced to death. Do you have any final words?”

Nathan looked out at the crowd, his glance sweeping slowly and stopping where Abigail, Jamie, and Robert stood. His eyes were bright, his stature proud. When he spoke, his voice boomed. “I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

So like Nathan. Patriot to the end. But damn, this was no academic exercise.

The officer nodded. The guard pulled the plank. Nathan dropped. Abigail heard the sick tug of the rope and the choke of breath. She closed her eyes, tears rushing down. From all over the camp, soldiers hollered jeers and catcalls, peppered with nervous laughter. A commotion drew her attention back. A soldier climbed onto the platform, hung something next to Nathan’s dangling body, and ran off laughing.

“Take that, Herr General!”

“You’re next, you maggoty coward!”

“We got another noose ready for ya!”

Robert whispered, “I think it would be prudent if we made our exit now.”

Jamie said, “Agreed. Follow my lead.”

Tears blurring her vision, Abigail followed the men. As she turned, she saw what hung next to Nathan—a wooden plank with a crude painting of a soldier and the word “Washington” scrawled above it.

She pulled her eyes away.

Jamie paused by the kitchen tent. “Grab one.” He pointed to empty food crates sitting in the grass. He hoisted one, and Robert picked up another and handed a smaller one to Abigail. The three walked right between the guards, faces hidden by the containers. As they turned the corner, Abigail shot a glance back and saw a soldier poke Nathan’s body with a bayonet. She jerked her head forward, the world blurred with tears.

The Ghastly Mr Denton and the Handsome Miss Jane by D.L Richards (Book Spotlight)

The town of Dolton, surely voted the country’s most mundane. The townsfolk herded about their days, lives cemented in tradition and a rigid social hierarchy – in which the top tier could be defined in a word: ostentatious. Their importance did not permit the acknowledgement of plebeians, who they generally agreed were more animal than civilised. Until the arrival of Mr Denton, that is. His barbaric display at the Dolton Women’s Club ignites Miss Jane’s long-dormant rebellious spirit – while utterly humiliating the avaricious widow Ms Greer.

Will his questionable behaviour lead to an uprising – or leave Dolton devastated.

Her eyes settled on a newspaper left on a nearby side table. The headline had been the talk of the town.

‘Such an audacious plan,’ Miss Jane baited.

Raising an eyebrow, he paused his treatment.

‘Pardon, Miss?’

‘The two thieves caught with close to ten thousand pounds from the Dolton Bank,’ Miss Jane nodded at the newspaper.

‘Audacious?’ Mr Adams grinned. ‘In my opinion, a remarkably overcomplicated heist for so little a prize.’

‘A rather dubious response. Have you experience in theft, Mr Adams? You believe one can casually rob a bank by walking in and out?’

‘Does this look like the face of a felon?’ he teased with a smile. ‘I’m afraid my life rather dull for such adventures. Though I believe it would make for an exhilarating career.’

‘Career? I fail to see how felony could be classed as an occupation or considered exhilarating, Mr Adams. Though were it your chosen career, I have no doubt it would be rather fleeting.’

‘You offend me, Miss Jane. The most straightforward ideas are often the best. And do not tell me you have never been tempted to pocket an item secretly while perusing a store or market.’

‘Perhaps as a child, Mr Adams. As an adult and a law-abiding citizen, I am perfectly able to obtain items through legal means. Might I add, I believe one finds greater happiness from the satisfaction of exercising self-control than succumbing to temptation.’

‘Must one not first taste temptation in order to induce self-control?’

 ‘A fool’s reply.’

‘Then a fool stands before you.’

What the hell was she thinking agreeing to this? She hadn’t seen Nathan since she went to his house to apologize and they shared not only a moment but an almost kiss, and now…now she was going out to dinner with him and the girls and freakin’ Joshua Dale. She liked Josh, and she actually felt bad about turning him down when he asked her out on a date. He was a good guy, sweet, funny, definitely cute, especially in his deputy uniform, but there hadn’t been a spark. Even if there had been, she still would have said no. Men like that were too easy to fall for and trust. Men like that would inevitably hurt her. The biggest difference between men like Josh and Trevor was that Josh would feel bad about it.

With Nathan, though, there wasn’t just a spark. There were fireworks…fireworks on top of flaming bonfires added to all the burners on the stove going at once and mixed with all the chemicals overreacting to each other in a lab. She was sure she could come up with even more metaphors, but she’d already made her brain hurt from overthinking things. Nathan did not just have the potential to break her heart, he could incinerate it.

This wasn’t a date, she told herself again. It was a group outing. That would be her mantra tonight.

She changed her clothes several times, made sure her makeup—though she didn’t wear much—looked flawless, and she wondered if Nathan preferred her hair up or down. Not a date. Not a date. Not. A. Date.

Okay, so maybe it really wasn’t a date, but a huge part of her wished that it was. She liked him…much more than she wanted to. How could I let this happen? She removed the clip from her hair, letting her silken locks fall straight past her shoulders. She sat on her bed with her head in her hands, berating herself for allowing these feelings. As if I had a choice. He somehow barreled into her life out of nowhere, demanding she reveal all of herself to him, and the worst part was that she wanted to. If she wasn’t running into him, she was thinking about him or thinking about ways to avoid thinking about him. And here she was just minutes ago, wondering which way she thought he would prefer her hair to be styled.

Distance. I need some distance. She would not be able to avoid him entirely, but she could try to limit the time she spent around him. That seemed like the best course of action, only the thought of not seeing him suddenly hurt her heart.

“Fuck!” She flung herself backward onto the bed, slamming her palms down on the mattress.

The doorbell rang. “Down it is,” she said, referring to her hair. When she opened the door, Nathan stood there wearing a cocky grin.

“Hi.”

“Um…hello.” Anna barely recognized her own voice. It came out as a sort of breathy squeak. She tried to peer past Nathan, into his car, but there was no one else with him.

Nathan turned his head to look behind him. When he turned back to face her, confusion marred his features. “Are you looking for something?”

“Where’s Ruby?” Ruby was supposed to be picking her up, Carla was meeting them at the restaurant right after her shift, and she wasn’t sure how Josh was getting to the restaurant.

“Ruby had a few last-minute errands, so I offered to pick you up.”

Anna finally realized she was being rude by not inviting him in, so she gestured him inside. “I’ll just go grab my bag.”

“My bag,” he mimicked in an exaggerated New York accent, making Anna laugh.

“Right, you guys say purse.” For the most part, Anna’s accent was nondescript, but certain choices of words and the pronunciations of them were definitely very Brooklyn. “You lived in the city. You should be used to it by now.”

“Mostly everyone I knew were transplants just like me, but I did get my daily dose of New Yawk City speak.”

“Oh shut it,” she said playfully. “We know there’s an r in there. I’ll just go grab my little ole purse.”

“No rush,” she heard him say on the way to her bedroom. There was still a trace of humor in his voice.

Something had just occurred to her. Bag forgotten, she walked back out into the living room.

“Wait, are we being set up again?” She was going to kill Carla. This was surely her doing. “Are they all going to come up with some excuse and not show up, leaving just the two of us at dinner?”

Nathan looked confused, or annoyed, at the possibility. She couldn’t tell which. “No. As far as I know, both Carla and Ruby are still coming, and you and I are going to go grab Josh from the station.”

Well that won’t be awkward at all, she thought. She went back into her room to grab her purse, and after locking up, they walked back to his car in silence.

Naughty Delights is here!

It’s grand opening day of Guilty Pleasures, and Donovan is there bright and early with his best friend Jackson. He came to show support to Jackson’s girl, Felicia and maybe grab a sugary treat. Little did he know he’d find something sweeter than anything offered on the menu board – the woman of his dreams

This is it, Elizabeth thought as she pushed through the door to deliver a large batch of chocolate and vanilla sugar cookies to the display case. It was grand opening day for Guilty Pleasures, and she couldn’t be more excited or more nervous. Years of scrimping and saving had accumulated to this day. In a matter of minutes the bakery would be open for business, and their city would officially have their first taboo sweet shop.

Elizabeth took one final look around, making sure everything was perfect, when Felicia, her business partner and friend, appeared next to her, chomping on a fornication cookie.

Out of all the sugary creations crafted for the shop, Elizabeth and Felicia would agree these were the most fun to develop. They spent many wine-filled nights brainstorming and researching ideas for the inserts.

“What’s it say, babe?” Elizabeth asked, nodding toward the paper in Felicia’s hand.

Felicia laughed and read the naughty message, “Two heads are better than one, but three, now that’s what I call a party!” As she tucked the paper into her back pocket, she asked, “I forget. Was this yours or mine?”

“I actually think your man deserves credit for this one.” Grinning, Elizabeth grabbed the sampler plate off the counter and walked toward the front door, turning to take one final look around before the place filled up. She couldn’t be any prouder of the decor in her little slice of heaven. She glanced to her left and smiled proudly as she admired the photos on the wall.

The food photographer they had hired did a fantastic job capturing the beauty and sexiness of several corset cakes available for purchase. But the icing on the cake, so to speak, was the mural to the right of the entrance. A local artist painted “What Are Your Guilty Pleasures” but the letters were actually naked people in compromising naughty positions.

Felicia giggled. “Oh yeah, it’s all coming back to me now. We definitely drank way too much that night.”

Nodding in agreement, Elizabeth turned on the neon sign and opened the doors for business.

Already, a few eager customers were waiting by the window. They actually applauded when Elizabeth stepped out of the shop door. She greeted them with a smile and offered them their choice of iced cocks or boobs. She wasn’t surprised the guests blushed when they made their selection and bit into the cookie. She expected to witness many rosy cheeks in the hours ahead of them—giggles too.

As the streets began to fill up with people going to work, Elizabeth tried to coax even more passersby into the shop with her funny shout-outs such as: “I bet our peckers taste as good as your man’s. No wait, even better!” And, “Our breasts are fantastic and all natural.” All the while she held up a naughty treat.

After the bell dinged behind her a couple dozen times, she realized the humorous approach to draw in customers was working like a charm. Now with them inside, she had no doubt every person who’d entered the shop erected from her dreams would be a repeat customer. And with this thought, she knew the many dinners of Ramen noodles were well worth the discomfort it cost her over the years.
