Courageous Kids Chronicles Book I: Roger, Denine, and Buddy’s Night Time Adventures! by ​Gary Brown (Book Review)

This book, the first in the ‘Courageous Kids Chronicles series, is a collection of stories that address children’s fears. Each story combines fiction and nonfiction elements to provide educational value and a comforting message about overcoming fear, specifically here, the fear of the dark.

After researching websites involving children’s Psychology, among others, and specifically, the Clay Center for Healthy Young Minds (see the Back Matter), it was easy to understand that the fear of children being in the dark is associated with real anxieties and apprehensions. This book hopes to bring this topic forward in fun, educational, and realistic suggested anecdotes on minimizing children’s fears of the dark.

I have researched and reviewed many similar perspectives and recommendations in addressing night time concerns for children. However, I am not a qualified professional and do not direct how these things should be handled. Instead, it is the responsibility of the families and trusted caregivers to coordinate with their medical and psychological professionals. This book series aims to present children’s fears in a way they can understand and relate to through words and visuals. And have some fun along the way. I have also included some common fears of the darkness with recommended anecdotes. Only the family and their trusted care professionals can make mindful decisions for their children. Thank You.

When it’s bedtime, children often express many fears. Fear of the monster lurking in the closet or under the bed. Shadows that move across the wall. Eerie noises inside and out of the house. Courageous Kids Chronicles Book I: Roger, Denine, and Buddy’s Night Time Adventures! takes readers on a journey, where the “monsters” are unmasked and we discover that there’s nothing to fear after all. 

Roger lives in a lovely red-brick house with his parents, sister Denine, and Buddy the dog. They are a close-knit family, always ready to help each other out, and Roger desperately needs his sister’s help. Buddy’s, too! Roger would love to have a full night’s sleep, but his nighttime fears keep him awake and afraid. Together, the trio set out to shine a light on all the creaks, rustling sounds, tiny flashes of light outside, and much more. Many kids will notice that the objects behind the noises in this story are the same noises they hear in their own home. Their fear might even vanish like Roger’s! 

Courageous Kids Chronicles Book I: Roger, Denine, and Buddy’s Night Time Adventures! tackle a problem that plagues MANY homes at bedtime: fear of the dark, shadows, bogeyman, strange sounds, and more. I recommend sharing this Roger’s eye-opening story with your kids. Help them to see there’s nothing to fear in the dark. Parents and educators, I also recommend reading “Reflection and Resolutions” where the writer shares common reasons children might fear the dark with anecdotes to alleviate those fears. 

The illustrations for Courageous Kids Chronicles Book I: Roger, Denine, and Buddy’s Night Time Adventures! were very impressive. Every image was a work of art, and there was no doubt that Roger’s fear was real. The creature behind the printer looked ready to devour Roger or come out of the book to gobble up the reader. Though there were frightful images, there are also plenty that show happiness and love. Buddy’s tongue hanging out was adorable, and the final image of the trio was so cute. I do recommend refining the placement of the pictures. I found some drawings were out of place, or too many were bundled in a row. There were small editing mistakes, too. That said, the artwork was outstanding, no matter its location, and the story was lovely, too. I recommend it for kids aged 4 to 9.

Several occasions might cause a child to be anxious, worried, or scared: first day at a new school, taking a test, public speaking, or speaking to new people, to name just a few. When you’re feeling any or all of these unpleasant feelings, it’s common for your body to react much like Sunny’s did. Sunny, a very cutely illustrated giraffe, has a very common reaction to the first day of school: their belly feels jumpy, and their hooves sweat. While we don’t have hooves, our human body has areas that might break out in a sweat. Mama Giraffe did not dismiss her calf’s fears; she reassured them that what they were experiencing was normal. Mama Giraffe also mentioned that when we feel anxious, our hearts can feel like they are running a race. Mama had a special breathing technique to quieten nervous bellies and pounding hearts. “Just breathe in slowly, like when you’re smelling the daisies out in the garden. Then, breathe out through your mouth, like when you’re blowing out the candles on your birthday cake.” This breathing technique comes in handy when Sunny has to stand up to a classroom bully. 

Bullies are present in every school, and often, the less-than-friendly classmate(s) target kids on their very first day or week of school. A bully can make it difficult for children to participate in class and interact with others on the playground. The negative attention can make a kid dread school days and can affect a kid’s mental and physical health. Sunny had the misfortune of being on a bully’s radar on their first day of school. Basher the bull’s name-calling and mocking of Sunny’s spots caused the giraffe to run out of the room in tears. 

Basher felt zero guilt or remorse when Sunny cried. He didn’t learn his lesson after spending time in the “calm corner,” either. However, Basher’s attitude drastically changed when Sunny stood up for herself, and he was the one no one wanted to play with on the playground. 

Sunny’s First Day shows the profound effect negative words can have on a person. The illustrated storybook shows the proper way to handle a bully. Sunny did not stoop to Basher’s level and call him names. Instead, she took the advice of Bailey (the elephant) and stood up to Basher; she informed him what he was doing and showed him that she would not let him stop her from having fun with the other animals. Before she stood hoof to hoof with the bull, she first needed to quiet her nerves and racing heart using her mom’s breathing technique. (Breathing techniques and positive affirmations are visited after the story’s conclusion.) 

While not every bully may change like Basher, Sunny’s inspiring handling of the situation and her ability to calm her nerves are valuable lessons for children. I strongly recommend sharing this book with your elementary students to help create a more peaceful and healthy environment for them to grow and learn. 

I loved the storyline and animal illustrations very much, but I couldn’t overlook the editing errors. I would recommend another editing pass.

Oh, what a joyous day it was in the kingdom of Nimbasoy. King Popee and Queen Mina were marking the arrival of their sweet baby, Princess Popina, with a huge celebration. Unicorns, clothes-wearing rabbits, Snow White and the seven dwarves, a giant, an elf, a dragon, and many more guests attended the festivities to meet the new addition to the royal family and to bring thoughtful gifts. Popina received many unusual presents you would not typically see at a baby’s party, such as snail shells and honey. And one magical gift that would only been feasible in a magical realm. Through the beautifully drawn illustrations, it was apparent Popina adored every gift; however, her favorite present was the lime green baby blanket. 

Many parents can empathize with a child’s attachment to a single object: a binkie, stuffed animal, or blanket. As you share this story with your children, I wouldn’t be surprised if they mention their favorite item to play with or carry around. They’ll probably have it close at hand. 

Popina’s blanket was special to her; she even named it Slumberina. To her, the blanket possessed magical powers. It offered comfort and happiness and was, in her opinion, her best friend. As Popina grew older, she faced a hard decision. She discovered that taking her friend to school with her was not in its best interest, but Popina didn’t want to be separated from the blankie either. The princess had to decide what was more important to her: her friend’s safety or her own happiness. Popina realized she could help her friend without minimizing her own happiness. 

Separation anxiety from a person or object can be difficult for kids. I encourage you to share the book with your child and let them see how Popina discovers her inner strength! 

I recommend the book to children three years and older.

Fear. Anxiety. Worry. Stress. Sadness. These emotions are not limited to adults; children face them as well, and they, like grown-ups, might have difficulty coping with them. 

Alyssa Hurley has created a magnificent story that offers children helpful phrases and tips that can turn negative feelings into positive ones. When a kid is consumed with worry over everything that needs to be done, the writer encourages them to say, “It will get better, do one thing at a time. I can’t get to the top, without having to climb.” 

Meeting new people and going to new places can also be overwhelming to some people. Again, the author advises on what can get you through this nerve-racking time. Whether you need a mental pep talk or an activity suggestion to redirect your thoughts, you’ll find it here in this beautifully illustrated and written storybook. Even though A Wallop of Worries’ target audience is young kids, I foresee many adults benefiting from its contents. The mental pick-me-ups and the reminders to enjoy the little things in life can pertain to readers of all ages. 

Life can be hectic and can affect us mentally. We are all bogged down with work: day job, school, or both. Then, we all experience positive and negative feelings surrounding the day’s events. If you need help dealing with your feelings, this book is for you! If you notice your child is overwhelmed but has trouble expressing their emotions, share this book with them. This calming, reassuring, resourceful children’s book would be perfect for any home, school, or therapist’s office. 

Self-care is important. I recommend sharing A Wallop of Worries with your child(ren). Practice the uplighting rhymes. Focus on your positive attributes. What makes you proud! Do something fun, like enjoying a cup of hot cocoa and a good book. This good book!

The Wiggly, Woggly Lady by Debi K Fraser (Book Review)

A story of wiggly feelings and making friends.

Wiggling and woggling is a lot of fun, but it would be so much more fun to do with friends. Thinking about trying to find those friends makes the wiggly, woggly lady feel very nervous. But today she has decided to try!

Fun, read-out-loud rhyme, comes together with quirky and unique characters, to gently illustrate the wonderful things that can happen when our children just be themselves.

Debi K Fraser (the writer) couldn’t have asked for a better interpretation of her storyline; Stephen Stone’s illustrations were spectacular. The wavy objects and characters were fun to look at it, and the curvy text was a delight to read. Together, the dynamic duo developed a creative book that children won’t be able to resist. They wiggle in their seats as you read it. They’ll wiggle around the house. They will be the wiggly friends the wiggly woggly lady has been seeking from the start of the story.

The wiggly woggly lady is sad because she has no friends. She’s too shy to ask someone to wiggle woggle with her. Questions of self-doubt flood her thoughts. What if they run away? Asking for someone to hang out with you or to be your friend might seem like a simple task to some people, but shyness is a paralyzing condition. People of all ages become physically ill at the thought of talking to a stranger. The wiggly lady’s stomach felt strange due to her anxiety about the situation.

As the wiggly woggly lady gathered her courage to face her fears, she failed to hear a mouse (wearing a purple leotard and pink tutu) asking her to wiggle and woggle with her. The lady also missed out on other people and animals wiggling the day away around town.

“The Wiggly Woggly Lady (Stories with Heart)” teaches young readers to be themselves and that good things will come because of it. It also stresses that sometimes it takes a little bravery to make your wishes come true. Oh, and remember that friends come in all sizes.

“The Wiggly Woggly Lady (Stories with Heart)” is a fun and humorous story that’ll get your child up and wiggling around their home. I recommend this adorable picture book for children 2-7.
