(review request submitted by Erin Lale, contributing author/editor, for an honest critique)

(Story One) The End of History by Gordon Yaswen explored TIME in the manners of science and philosophy. In doing so, Yaswen reached a broader audience. The more individuals who can debate/explore a topic = more readers, more press. That is the goal of most writers. To get people talking about their work!

(Story Two) Space is majestic, but it also comes with obstacles and fears. Every time a person explores space and the unknown, they are essentially gambling with their life. If something life-threatening happens in space, there is no 9-1-1. You and your comrades only have yourselves to rely on and no one else. All of this was emphasized in Choice by Ralph Ewig.

(Story Three) Noble Northern Spirit by Erin Lale was vastly different from its predecessors in this anthology. Erin Lale did not venture out into space. Her adventures took place on Earth. Hers centered almost entirely around magic.

Through the fourteen chapters, Erin Lale mentioned witches, the mob, drug smuggling, Jesus, Satan, and (deep breath) THOR!

There were several mythical beings discussed, in-depth or in passing. She really threw everything into the story except the kitchen sink. 😀

Speaking of kitchen sink, if I had magical powers, I’d used them to tackle the dishes in my sink. 😛

(Story Four) Testing Time by Tony Thorne MBE could be plausible in one aspect. If any citizen created a working time machine or force field, the military would be all over them. They’d confiscate the tech and the person.

The interesting part of Testing Time came millions of (Earth) years later. I wished this section was explored more. Yes, I want about another 10-20 more pages. Why? Because there was so much more Tony Thorne could’ve said. Testing Time felt like it was just getting started when the story was (technically) wrapping up.

Tony, I would love for you to expand this tale. I’d read it if you did. 🙂

(Story Five) The Artist Formerly Known as G-d by Erin Lale discussion of time travel, disruption of events, changing history, and warnings about when/where not to travel got me thinking. If I could travel to any period, where would I blast off to first?

I don’t know about Aunti Cassie and her opinion of her time spent with da Vinci. It might be an unforgettable experience to witness the creation of one of his genius inventions.

The only thing I know for sure…I would limit my time in any place which didn’t have indoor plumbing. I’m a bit spoiled in that way. 😀

(Story Six) The Beginning by J.L. Toscano would appeal to anyone who works in the sciences or is fascinated by science as a hobby. My hubby and his friends regularly discuss, and debate topics brought up in The BeginningThere’s also a theory that we (Earthlings) are merely puppets, and someone is pulling our strings. After reading The Beginning, you’ll wonder if this theory could be plausible. I’m sure many will debate this question. 🙂

For a moment, Jenna lay motionless, battered, bleeding and frightened, then she gazed in the direction of Arid’s disappearance. Maybe he would just hurt her more the next time. She knew Tiona could easily heal her, but maybe Arid would kill her. Her unquestioning devotion was to Tiona and her life was Tiona’s to take, but the emotions enclosed behind her mental wall included the will to survive. Arid didn’t own her and she only felt submissive to him because of his mother.

The walls surrounding her emotions crumbled and they surged forth. These powerful feelings overwhelmed her scorpion parasite’s control over her. Jenna surged to her feet and pulled her torn panties from her mouth. Her fist clamped tight around them and she cast one more look in the direction of the house, then bolted deeper into the forest. She ran as fast as her legs would take her heedless of the cuts and abrasions that assaulted her bare feet. Even when her side started to ache, she ran on. Fear and the desire to survive were great motivators.

Coherent thought returned during her sprint. Jenna was certain the demons would easily track her, so she needed to get as far away as possible and get off the ground. Like getting into a car. She altered her direction of flight angling back toward the main paved road.

Jenna burst through the trees into a clearing containing a small cabin that appeared to be unoccupied. She leaned forward panting harshly. Jenna paused long enough to tie the waist strap of her thong panties and tugged them on. The panties didn’t cover much, but in her mind at least, they were better than being completely naked. Her inner thighs were blackened from the demon seed leaking from within her.

During her rapid investigation or the cabin from the outside, Jenna found two ATVs in a shed beside it. She broke the glass out of one window and crawled into the cabin. In desperation, she searched for anything she thought would assist her. There was a long shirt in one closet and a pistol in its holster.

She threw on the shirt not taking the time to button it and tossed the holster over one shoulder. She knew the gun would not kill the demons, but it would hurt them. Hurting them before they killed her would have to suffice. In addition, being armed made her feel better. If nothing else, she intended to take her own life rather than be captured.

Jenna smiled briefly when she found two sets of keys hanging on a nail in the kitchen cupboard. They were keys for the ATVs. Dashing out to the shed she checked the fuel level in each and selected the one with the most. Jenna bit her lower lip and prayed when she turned the key to the start position.

To her relief the engine coughed to life. Jenna backed the vehicle out of the shed and raced along the driveway. She reached the pavement and turned left knowing that way led to the interstate and the city. She had no inkling why she was suddenly free of her scorpions control and had no idea how long the condition would last. A feeling gnawing at her mind, told her that while she had freedom of choice she needed to put as much distance between the demons and herself as possible.

After belting the pistol holster around her waist and buttoning her shirt to hide her breasts and the gun, Jenna raced beside the pavement on the ATV. She came to a halt at the on-ramp to the interstate highway that led to town. Riding an ATV on the freeway was illegal and certain to raise suspicion of driver’s who passed. But what choice do I have?

A pickup came to a halt beside her. There was a single male occupant driving. “You can’t take that on the freeway,” he hollered through the open passenger window.

“I know but I have to get to town. It’s an emergency,” she shouted at him.

“What’s wrong?”

Jenna debated what to say quickly. “I was kidnapped. I’m trying to get away,” she said.

“Holy shit. Stay right there.” The man pulled his pickup to the side of the road ahead of her. He jumped out of the cab and raced toward her. “Leave the ATV here and I’ll call it in then take you to the police.”

Thoughts raced through Jenna’s mind. She hadn’t planned out her escape. Her only thought had been to get away, self-preservation. She had seen Tiona fight before and now there were three demons. The police and their guns offered her zero protection from them. When demons found out the police were protecting her, they would come. They would tear into police as if they were nothing. The only chance she had was distance and hiding.

Jenna switched off the ATV ignition. When she dismounted she turned to the side and drew the gun. The man skidded to a halt and surprise washed across his face when she faced him with the leveled the gun.

“For reasons you wouldn’t believe, I can’t go to the police. I’m going to take your truck instead. I need you to put your hands on your head and step into the trees.”

“I stopped to help you and now you’re going to kill me?” he asked.

“I’m not going to kill you…unless you force me to. Now do as I said.”

The man placed his hands on his head and marched in front of her. She halted him when they were out of sight from the road. “Take off all your clothes except your shoes,” she ordered.

He frowned but complied removing all but his underwear.

“Your boxers too,” she said.

“You must be joking,” he said.

Jenna tightened her lips and shifted the gun pointed at him. “Do I act like I’m kidding? Are you willing to risk dying to find out?”

The man grumbled but removed his underwear.

“Now step back.” When he did she strode forward and picked up his clothes. She quickly searched his pants pockets. “Where are the keys to the truck?” she asked.

“In the ignition.”

“And your cell?”

“On the seat in the cab.”

“Stay here in the woods until I’m gone,” Jenna ordered. Carrying his clothes in one hand, she darted to the truck, tossed the clothes into the truck bed and slid behind the steering wheel. Just as he’d said, the keys were in the ignition and there was a smart phone on the seat. She started the truck but instead of driving up the ramp and heading west toward Albuquerque she drove under the overpass and went east.

Excerpt

Chad resisted the urge to break into a run when he passed the run-down house. If not for the fact it was along the route he used when he walked to work . . . You’re a grown man, not some scared little boy. Still—something about the place gives me the willies.

Cold and dreary looking, the dilapidated two story structure sat on a lot that encompassed the entire block. An unkempt yard, overgrown with vines and shrubs, surrounded it. Nobody had lived in the place for years.

Not since old lady Jameson vanished a number of years ago.

That was long before he’d moved here.

His steps carried him away, putting the house behind him. The somber feeling of foreboding lifted from his shoulders as the distance increased. Two blocks farther, he entered a two story eight-plex. Taking the steps two at a time, he then paced down the hallway to his apartment door located on the left near the rear of the complex. Soon he forgot the eerie feeling. Changing out of his uniform, he put on faded blue jeans and buttoned up his sport shirt.

Locking the door behind him, he left for the small bar a short distance away. When he opened the door, the smell of whiskey and stale cigarettes assailed his nose.

Why do I come here?

He answered his own thought immediately.

Because this may be a hole in the wall, but they have an excellent burger. He usually treated himself to one at the end of his shift. The bartender poured a glass of ice water and set it in front of him on the counter.

“The usual, Chad?” the bartender asked.

“Yes, thanks.”

The bartender walked away to place his order.

“What’s up, Chad my man?” a familiar voice said. He stifled a groan when Jerry sat down next to him.

Why me?

“Not much. Just got off work.” For some reason, Jerry had glommed onto him from the start.

Maybe because I was new in town. Maybe because I didn’t know him any better. That and the fact he has an apartment in the same building as me. And he and I are both single.

“Wanna come to the club with me tonight? There might be some fresh meat there. Ya never can tell, with that new catalog ordering center opening up. I hear they’ve hired a number of women. About damn time this shitty little town got some new businesses.”

Translated, new women who don’t know you and what a player you are, Jerry.

“If you hate this place so much, why do you stay? Why don’t you move to a larger town?”

“Maybe I will someday, but in the meantime I haven’t bedded all the eligible ladies in this one.” He winked.

And some that are not eligible, Jerry.

Chad shook his head and smothered his sigh of disgust. Even after all these months of knowing Jerry, he found it hard to believe his attitude toward women. He found it even more difficult to accept.

“So what time should I pick you up?” Jerry asked.

“I’m kind of tired. Just got off my three day shift.”

He should have known that Jerry would not be discouraged that easily.

“Aw, come on. You don’t do anything but lay around over there unless there’s a fire.”

“We do other things, besides fight fire in this town, you know.”

“What, rescue cats from trees?” Jerry scoffed.

He rolled his eyes and bristled at hearing his job belittled. “It’s not worth arguing about. I just don’t feel like going out tonight.”

“You aren’t still mooning over Anna are you?”

Jerry had to mention Anna. The one good and bad thing Jerry had done was introduce them.

“Damn it, Jerry. You had to bring her up. Sometimes you’re a real asshole.”

Most of the time, he amended mentally.

He and Anna had hit it off surprisingly well, considering she was a cousin of Jerry’s. He surmised that Jerry hadn’t hit on Anna because they were related.

Memories of Anna flooded his mind, bringing on dismal emotions. The two of them had done most everything together from the time they met. Then her employer had offered her a promotion. The trouble was it entailed relocating. He hadn’t wanted to move and she had wanted the promotion. The breakup had been amiable, but it still shattered his heart.

“She’s gone, man. Time to spread your affections to others and stop sitting around wishing things were different.”

“Spread my affections, like you?”

“Maybe. Love ‘em and leave ‘em. Don’t stick around long enough for messy entanglements. There’s always another one waiting around the corner. Besides, variety is the spice of life.”

“I’m not like that.”

“Pity. We’d make a good team. Well, anyway, I’ll stop by your apartment at eight.”

Clearly, Jerry was not going to take no for an answer. He sighed in defeat. “Fine. Now go away and let me eat my burger in peace.”

Chuckling, Jerry swaggered away.

Sure enough, Jerry was at his door at eight. At the club, Jerry scoped out a table of four new women, and introduced the two of them. Later that night, Jerry disappeared with one of the women. No warning or anything. They were on the dance floor one moment and the next, the two of them were gone. That left Chad to entertain the other three. He knew he should be mad at Jerry, but he was used to it.

After visiting and dancing with the remaining three, they parted and he went home . . . alone.

Micca is far from innocent and pure. Instead she is brazen and rebellious, as Kevin will soon find out.

Micca sighed at the feeling of crisp coolness pressed against her skin. She opened her eyes and gazed out on the unfamiliar room. She was in a strange bed as well. Rolling to her back she gathered the cool satin sheet around her neck and gazed up at the antique white ceiling. Micca slowly became aware of her surroundings. With this awareness came the knowledge that with the exception of her panties, she was naked. Glancing to the foot of the bed she saw her top and shorts were folded neatly and rested on the top of a dresser. There was a nightstand composed of the same light-colored wood as the dresser on one side of the bed and a white leather chair. On the other side of the bed was an armoire, again constructed of the light-colored wood. “Nice,” she breathed. “Nothing but the best for you, huh Kevin.”

The bedroom door cracked open and an eye peered in. She chuckled. “I’m wake.”

The door opened wider and Kevin strolled into the room. He wore a collared pull-over shirt and blue jeans today. He carried a cup of coffee in his hand which he held out to her. Micca sat up ignoring that the sheet fell away with her actions exposing her breasts. “Bless you,” she said and accepted the cup. “I’m sorry I fell asleep last night—”

“Yesterday was a long drive. You needed rest.”

“Is it safe for me to assume you carried me in here, undressed me, and put me in this bed?

“Yes.”

“And did we?”

Kevin grinned. “No, your good virtue is intact.”

Micca snorted. “My good virtue was gone long ago. Back when we were in high school. If I remember right, you were one of the ones who helped me remove it.”

Now it was his turn to snort. “If you’re waiting for me to apologize for that you’re going to have a long wait.”

Micca took a sip of her coffee and he continued, “I do have a confession to make.”

“And that is?”

“I snuck a peek and I love you’re blue landing strip.” His grin reminded her of a naughty little boy peeking in his dad’s nudie magazines.

“Thank you. Now I need to ask you something.”

“Okay.”

“Did Dale help you carry me in here and undress me? Did he also look at my landing strip?”

Kevin cocked his head. “Would you like it if he had?”

“Maybe I wouldn’t have minded,” she blurted unthinking, then quickly tried to change her words. “I mean no. I feel uncomfortable enough that you’ve seen me I should be mortified at the thought both of you had.”

“But you aren’t mortified, are you? You like him, don’t you?”

She didn’t answer.

“That’s what I thought. Well he likes you as well. He told me so.”

“Kevin, I do like him, I like you as well. There’s one big difference.”

“And that is?”

Shamelessly she said, “I didn’t last night but this weekend is just started. Before it is over you and I are going to fuck at least once.”

Kevin grinned and stood from the chair he sat in. “I didn’t know what you wanted but there’s yogurts and bagels out in the kitchen.”

“Is Dale here?”

Kevin paused at the door. “No, he had some errands to run this morning. He’ll be back later.” Kevin continued out of the room.

Micca folded back the sheet, grabbed her empty coffee mug from the nightstand and followed him wearing nothing but her G-string. She padded into the kitchen and Kevin turned. His jaw dropped open when he saw her.

“It’s time I stopped pretending to be bashful and innocent and be my slutty self. Kevin, you know I’m no virgin what you should know is I’ve partied a lot. I’ve been with more than one man in a single night, in the same room. I’ve been with women too. On occasion I’ve been with more than one at the same time. Do you still want to have sex with me?”

He crossed from the coffee pot to stand in front of her. Taking one of her cheeks in each of his hands, he tilted her face up and pressed his lips to hers. “Yes,” he answered when he ended the kiss. He slapped her ass and pulled out a chair for her then took her coffee mug.

While he refilled it, he asked. “So are you trying to tell me you wouldn’t mind a threesome?” He crossed back to the table with two coffee cups and set hers in front of her. He pulled out a chair and sat then waited for her to answer.

“That is for you and Dale to discuss and decide. I’ll only say this, I’m open to it if you two want to share me and can avoid the drama of two men being jealous of each other. I don’t do drama well.”

For the 18+ reader: Strong language and descriptive sex scenes.

Ona has been converted and now serves her demon Mistress, Tiona, without question. Max will be the first of the musical family to suffer Tiona’s wrath, he won’t be the last.

Tiona peered down from a high point in the upper tier of seating at the concert going on down on the stage. Ona was circulating through the crowds below. Neither of them had occupied the assigned seats stated on their passes. Those had just been used as a way to gain entrance to the packed auditorium. Without much hope, she scanned the mass searching for Kiya.

She wanted information desperately but getting it might be a tricky problem. They couldn’t just walk up and ask someone. She had little hope that Ona would be able to hook up with one of the band members even though they were notorious for partying after their shows: not here with these masses of beautiful women to choose from. Even though Ona was devastatingly gorgeous herself the odds were unfavorable.

Tiona scanned the throng again and smiled, but she had an alternate plan. Ona’s scorpion parasite allowed her to communicate with the woman mentally. “Where are you?” Tiona asked.

“Forcing my way through the masses,” Ona answered, “But I’m nearing the north end of the stage. As you ordered earlier, I’m searching for one of the band’s roadies to try and hook up with.”

“Let me know when you find one,” Tiona said and went back to searching.

“I will my Mistress,” Ona answered.

As she observed, Tiona thought of the plan. The chances of Ona getting in with one of the band members was remote, but seducing one of the roadies would probably be successful. Getting information from him would be easy if things went according to plan. Tiona strolled to a new location and continued her search.

“I think I spotted one,” Ona’s thought filtered into her mind. “He’s the beefy blonde at the north end near the back of the stage.”

Tiona focused her enhanced vision in the area Ona indicated. The man wearing tight blue jeans and a t-shirt with the band’s logo stenciled on it was standing near the stage with a prop in hand. “I see him. Go to work sweetie. Lure him in.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

***

Ona forced her way closer to the man garnering a looks of displeasure and a few rude comments as she did. She ignored them and focused on her target instead. Her scorpion companion allowed past knowledge to dribble out of the recesses of her mind. The name Franz flashed into her thoughts although she couldn’t remember what her relationship with him had been. What she could remember was Franz had once been a roadie and had shared his memories of the occupation with her.

She used this knowledge to strike up a conversation with the man whose name she soon learned was Max. At first their conversation centered on the band but Ona steered it to what Max did. Ona used her knowledge to ask intelligent questions of him and of course showered flattery on him. When he was looking away at the stage, Ona smiled, during their conversation Max couldn’t keep his gaze from drinking in her body largely revealed by her scanty outfit. The deep V of her dress dipped low enough to reveal her navel piercing and barely cover her red areolas. The red dress with splotches of white ended a third of the way down her thighs when she was standing. Black high heels completed her outfit. Her G-string panties were black as well but she hadn’t show those to him…not yet.

While Max was occupied with handing a prop up to the man on stage she unclipped the silver chain that held the halves of her dress over her breasts. He turned back to face her and she twisted quickly to glance at a noise in the audience. Her action caused her left breast to spill from under its scanty covering affording him a brief view of her nipple piercing. Ona turned back to face him and pretended embarrassment at having exposed her breast. She quickly covered it and continued their conversation. By the end of the concert she had provided him views of both breasts and bending over to retrieve her purse she had purposely dropped, afforded him a glimpse of her bare ass.

The band left the stage and the crowd started to file out of the auditorium. “Well the show is over. I’ll be riding back to the hotel with the rest of the roadies soon. It’s been nice talking to you Ona. Most of my conversations here are about the band members and how to get access to them.”

Ona placed her hand on his bicep. “I really enjoy taking with you Max. I hate to end the evening.” She paused as if considering. “I don’t suppose you’d be interested in continuing our visit over cocktails and a bar I know of?”

Max scratched his chin. “I love to but I’d miss my ride.”

“I have a car. I can take you back to the hotel after. Damn,” She dropped her purse and stooped to pick it up. In the process, her breasts spilled free. It was all the incentive Max needed. Ona could read his mind through the look in his eyes. “He wants to fuck me badly. Guess what Max? you’re going to get the chance to do just that.” Her thought reached out to Tiona.

“Good girl,” Tiona thought back.

“Let me tell one of the guys I won’t be riding back in the van,” Max said. “Wait right here.”

“He’s hooked,” Ona told Tiona while she waited. “We’re leaving in the car.”

“I’ll go out and get in the trunk,” Tiona answered.

Max returned and slipped his hand in hers. When they left the auditorium, he let her guide him to the car and slid into the passenger seat. Ona slipped into the seat pretending to drive to the bar she’d mentioned. As she drove her dress bunched higher and provided Max clear views of her black G-string each time they were stopped at a light and under the bright illumination there.

Ona flashed a smile at Max when his gaze drifted to her center once more at a traffic light. “Do you like what you see?” she asked him.

He quickly shifted his gaze and looked out the windshield.

“Don’t pretend to be shy and try to make me think you don’t screw girls all the time Max. You’re working for a band and going from town to town.”

“No comment,” he said.

“None needed, I’m sure I know. I like talking to you…Maybe I’ll like doing something else with you even more.”

Max swallowed hard but didn’t answer.

Ona turned into a gas station. “I need to make a quick pit stop and can’t wait until we get to the bar. Wait right here.” She got the restroom key from the attendant and dashed into the restroom. When she returned to the car she slid behind the steering wheel again and pulled back out on the street. His eyes bugged and his jaw fell open at the next stop light when he saw she’d removed her panties.

“Damn.” He gulped again.

Ona reached down and played with her piercing. “I don’t normally do this but I feel a chemistry between us. Kitty is thirsty for some milk. Do you have any milk to give her?” Ona asked then tossed her panties into his lap. “Maybe you should take a whiff of those before you answer.”

Max lifted the panties from his lap and inhaled deeply. “Christ Ona you have no idea how much I want to fuck you.”

“Well then, we’ve established what both of us want, the only thing left to decide is should we do it in your room or drive out to my house about thirty minutes away.” Ona held her breath hoping for the answer she desired.

“My room. It’s closer.”

Ona exhaled in relief. “Okay, where’s your room?”
