We live in a world where it’s easy to let the troubles, the conflicts, and the negativity weigh us down. Negativity can affect our health mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, and psychologically. Just as a negative environment impacts our lives, so does a positive one. Positive affirmations help motivate people, encourage positive life changes, and boost self-esteem. Those who practice positive affirmation may experience fewer negative thoughts and a better response to stress, leading to a happier and healthier life.

We are asked to reflect on the day in 90 Days of Gratitude for a Healthier and Happier Life. Name “5 Things I am Grateful for Today,” give “3 Positive Affirmations,” and rate “How I am Feeling Today” on a scale from 1 star up to five. Besides those three staple questions, each day includes one bonus question, such as writing down something unique about myself or something I am excited about. There are seven bonus questions in total, which are repeated in every weekly cycle. 

After the seven days, it’s time for the weekly check-in, where participants list the highlights, challenges, accomplishments, and goals/what they’re looking forward to in the next week. The writer encourages you to take 5-10 minutes out of your day, jot down what parts of the day you are grateful for, and keep the positive thoughts flowing, as this will improve your mental health and, I bet, your overall health as well! 

According to Take2Minutes, “Journaling helps you process your emotions and learn more about yourself.” They also state, “Studies have shown that a journaling practice can significantly lower symptoms of depression and anxiety.” This journal is a valuable resource for those dealing with internal struggles, whether its addiction, mental health issues, or everyday stresses of life. I encourage you to take five minutes out of your day and write down positive aspects. As the author states, it can be something small. Just focus on what made your day a little brighter. 

Read the weekly inspirational quotes because they may give you the courage to face the day with a smile. I’ll leave you with the wise words of Winston Churchill, “The pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.”

Jessica bachelor’s degree in nursing and has worked most of her career in the emergency department. During her time as a nurse, she has noticed a lack of education on mental illness and eating disorders and uses this as a catalyst to reduce the mental health stigma through education and awareness.

Have You Ever Seen? by Jacqueline “MAX” Zarro (Book Review)

This book strives to bring joy and giggles as readers follow Max the Mole as he wanders about the land running into animals, vegetables, bugs, fish, and ice cream. His journey involves many unlikely scenarios, including a flower taking a shower, a goat in a boat that doesn’t float, and a fly that is an international spy. This book is sure to bring a smile to children’s faces.

Have You Ever Seen? With “Max” the Mole asks children questions that center around silly and impossible scenarios. For example, have you ever seen a bat on a date with a gnat or a bunny with lots of money? What about a moose and a goose enjoying a cup of orange juice? I bet the only time a child has seen a dragon pulled in a wagon is if the dragon was stuffed or made of plastic. 

There were so many ridiculously funny questions and images. Jacqueline “MAX” Zarro (writer) and Ron Zarro’s (writer and illustrator) imaginations will have children giggling nonstop. Even adults will be smiling at the creative artwork and silliness of the writings. 

Nearly all the scenarios were unlikely. However, I found one that could be plausible, thanks to the Muppets. Miss Piggy has blonde hair. She may have stood on a twig at some point. Therefore, I’d like to answer the writers’ question, “Have you ever seen a pig standing on a twig wearing a wig?” with a firm….maybe.

Since a child’s imagination seems limitless at times, I think they might answer yes to several of the have you ever questions. Children love “tea parties,” so questions involving an animal eating or drinking could land in the yes category. I’d be stunned to hear one say they’ve seen a banana wearing a bandanna unless they like to play with their food. 

In the final moments, Have You Ever Seen? With “Max” the Mole prompts readers to share outlandish scenarios they’ve seen. I bet children will come up with exciting and hilarious combinations. 

Amazon has the set recommended reading age of six to eight years, but anyone from pre-k to fifth grade will find this book highly entertaining. It’s a laugh riot that’ll please many young readers and the adults sharing it with them!

165 Ridiculously Absurd Questions and Statements Creating Laughter and Fun Moments with Yourself and Others offers brief comedic items that may be statements, questions, or a mixture of both. 

Some of J.T. Newcomb’s statements were quite amusing. For instance, number twelve, “If I woke up one day with actual octopus tentacles instead of arms, I would wonder why I only had two and not the usual eight.” I’m unsure if I wonder or ponder the number so much as I would freak out that I now have tentacles. On number 13, the author wrote, “If your name is Jim and you promote going to the gym, wouldn’t people think you’re a bit bias?” The author was not suggesting naming a gym “Jim,” but I thought it was a funny coincidence I recently had a discussion about homophones and these particular words.

Number twenty-seven states, “Sharks are mean.” Maybe they are just hangry. I would suggest offering them a Snickers, but I doubt that’ll fix their issue. Plus, do you want to get your hand that close to a shark’s mouth? 

Do you love dad jokes or puns? Check out number thirty-three! “If you’re a food reviewer writing about a dish comprised of ground beef and okra called Meaty Okra, be careful when describing it as mediocre.” By the way, I shared it with my husband, who laughed; therefore, this has earned the “dad” stamp of approval. 

So many statements and questions had me rolling my eyes because they were so ridiculous. Which was great; I loved their silliness! The whale and pizza incident, catfishing and cat fishing, shampooing a pigeon, and many more. And to answer the sloth question (#109), yes, it would! (Read the book for the question.)

From a design point of view, I would suggest adding a space or two after each number. Some have the space and so don’t. Also, some readers might like a few images because the inside contents do look a bit plain. 

165 Ridiculously Absurd Questions and Statements Creating Laughter and Fun Moments with Yourself and Others is slightly over twenty pages and contains a whole lot of comedy, making this a book I highly recommend! Perfect for the entire family!

About the Author

J.T. Newcomb has had a long history of comedic focus such as in writing songs like the “Good Ol’ Days in the Amniotic Sac” and a song about how cheap rent would be if the roaches paid their share. He’s done stand up comedy and now translates his absurdist style to a book for the first time.
