Review of “Krewe of Souls (Southern Ghosts Series Book 3) – Elaine Calloway

Tristan Pleasance is a ghost whisperer extraordinaire, but talking to his living father is another story. Family conflict prompts Tristan to bolt from his lifelong home in St. Francisville, Louisiana, to make a new life in New Orleans. But six months later, a family tragedy forces him to return home and he is thrust into a murder investigation where his past and future will collide.

Grace Lansing is a New Orleans columnist who yearns to write feature articles rather than puff pieces. To prove herself to her editor, she travels to the quaint town of St. Francisville to research their big Mardi Gras Krewe competition. But what seems an innocent cultural practice quickly turns into a web of intrigue—and getting too close to the handsome Tristan puts her in danger of becoming collateral damage.

Together, Tristan and Grace must find out who is responsible for the murders—before the Krewe of Souls is trapped forever.

Krewe of Souls is the third book in the Southern Ghosts Series by Elaine Calloway. The setting is in New Orleans and St. Francisville, Louisiana, a quaint town with a haunted reputation. The book is a romantic suspense for adults.

I, myself, have never had my palm/tarot cards read or visited a psychic. I’m not sure if the gift really exists or if it’s a scam to pray on people’s hope and wallets. However, if the ability to see the dead exists, I think using it to help solve murders should be utilized every chance we can get.

In this story, Tristan uses his gift with the aid of a reporter to uncover the truth behind five murders (six if you count the beloved family dog).

As mysteries go, Elaine pretty much spelled it out who orchestrated the murders and why. However, I don’t think the murders were the main plot of this story. For me, I thought Elaine was showing us the reconnection of father and son. Maybe I’m wrong but their failed relationship was the bigger focal point for me. The death of Tristan’s mom was the reason why Tristan came home, why his father and him faced their differences, and why their severed bond mended — stronger than ever.

Interview with V.A. Dold

       1. Welcome,V.A. Dold. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(V.A. Dold) Hi. Thank you for having me. I have a marketing degree and was a publicist for authors, which gradually led to writing my own novels.

2. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(V.A. Dold) I have had slow downs from burn out but I’ve never had writers block.

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(V.A. Dold) Reading, traveling, and hanging out with friends.

4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(V.A. Dold) Everyone who knows me knows I write. My very catholic family pretty much ignores it, but my friend and children support it whole heartedly.

5. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen,
yours or otherwise,
which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?
(V.A. Dold) Oh Wow.
I’d love to see Cade as a movie.

I think Matt Bomer for Cade

And Melissa McCarthy for Anna

6. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(V.A. Dold) Richie

Four years ago, Richie met a group of Tulane freshmen when he saved one of them from a mugger. Now the first of their menagerie is getting married. Surprise of all surprises, Richie meets his mate, Piper, at the wedding in Missouri, of all places. He didn’t expect her to be a bounty hunter or that her murderous prey had turned the tables and she was now the hunted. Will Piper apprehend her bounty or will her bounty get to her first?
Can Richie save her from the death he foresaw in a premonition? Injuries are mounting and time is running out.

     7. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(V.A. Dold) Just about any retailer Amazon, B&N, and iBooks
# 5 Lucas
# 6 Richie

     8. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(V.A. Dold) I have a website   http://www.vadold.com
Or email  vadold@yahoo.com

9. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(V.A. Dold) After Richie I’ll be writing another Cowboy in my K.I.S.S. Series so stay tuned for that. And Seth is talking loudly in the Le Beau Series. Here is the blurb for his up coming book:

Orphaned at birth, Seth is adopted and raised by the king and queen of the shifters, Isaac and Emma Le Beau.

Circumstances and heart break propel him into the elite band of hunters. Shifters pledged to serve the Goddess as her right hand. Meting out justice to the shifters who gorogue.

Burned out and ready to retire, Seth seeks refuge at the plantation, but Isaac has one last hunt for him to complete.

Unable to deny his father and king, will this assignment be his undoing or his salvation?

Wow, you are one busy lady!! 🙂
Congratulations to all the books you’ve written and the best of luck on the WIP’s.

Readers, I hope you enjoyed my interview with V.A. Dold and found one or more books that intrigue you. If you answered yes, AWESOMENESS, my job is now complete. 🙂

Marguerite Ceniza dies on the London stage each night, but her own life has barely begun. The ingénue is on the prowl for a lover, but while she burns with desire for Sophie, a confession could ruin their decade-long friendship. In the meantime there are always men vying to be her patron, and square-jawed, broad-shouldered James Glover can’t help but catch her eye.

Now this was a hot erotic tale. Two ladies, best of friends, take the plunge and take their friendship to the next level. Let me tell you what folks, that monumental turning point was HOT, HOT, HOT.

It was tastefully erotic.

If that first love scene wasn’t exhilarating enough, James enters the picture.

You see, he was courting both woman (one as a wife, the other his mistress) and, unbeknownst to him, they were lovers.

Instead of yelling and throwing things, Meg came up with a deliciously wicked act of revenge. Bound him to a chair while he has to suffer and watch them make love in front of him. I know the guys reading this will agree that was the purest torture imaginable. I tip my hat to you, Tess!!

As with any story, you expect drama and Tess delivers that as well (insert the villain Baron here).

The lovers do quarrel (as expected) but when they need each other, love prevails. I mean, you can’t have a true love story without a HEA. Right? 🙂

Darkest Before Dawn by Maya Banks (Book Review)

The enigmatic Hancock has been both opponent and ally to the KGI teams for as long as they’ve known him. Always working a deep game, Hancock’s true allegiance has never been apparent, but one thing is for certain—he never lets anything get in the way of duty.

But now, his absolute belief in the primacy of his ultimate goal is challenged by a captive he’s been ordered to guard, no matter how much she suffers in her prison. She’s the only woman who’s ever managed to penetrate the rigid walls surrounding his icy heart, but will he allow his perplexing feelings for the beautiful victim to destroy a mission he’s spent years working to complete or will he be forced to sacrifice her for “the greater good.”

REVIEW

We’ve all seen Guy Hancock be Mr Billy Badass more times than we can count. We’ve also seen his softer side. However, we’ve never seen his heart truly laid out before us than when he met and fell for Honor. I always thought Maya would have to create one helluva woman to capture Hancock’s heart and she didn’t fail me in this tall feat. Honor had more strength, integrity, courage, and yes, honor than probably most men and women I’ve read about through my many years as a bookworm.

I can see why so many people were in awe of her. She made quite an impression on everyone she encountered and those she didn’t encounter as well. A character that will always be remembered.

This is a story that shall be remembered.

Darkest Before Dawn had action, true love scenes, and numerous passages which will break your heart right along the characters they center around.

Folks, be prepared to lose yourself in the story of an unforgettable heroine who managed to love a man who couldn’t love himself while fighting the villains who threaten to tear their world apart.

‘Hello? Is anyone here?’

A low voice rumbled down the hallway, and her chest tightened. It was a man, but she didn’t recognise the voice. For a moment, she considered remaining quiet, but she licked her lips and made herself step forward. She was overreacting. If she wasn’t, there was an emergency call button hidden under the lip of her desktop. Security could be here in less than a minute if she needed them.

She returned to the lobby and scanned the area. Her gaze came to a screeching halt when it landed on the man who was already looking in her direction.

Oh. Wow.

Her wariness didn’t decrease, but a different kind of awareness flooded her. ‘Hello?’ she said huskily.

Somehow he’d known she was there, yet he seemed taken aback. His weight slowly rocked back from the balls of his feet, and his eyes narrowed. They were blue eyes. Startling blue. ‘Good evening.’

She wasn’t overreacting. The guy had danger written all over him, in that good-girls-beware sort of way. Tall and strapping, he had closely cropped dark hair and a rough-and-tumble aura that didn’t go with the tuxedo he was wearing. That wasn’t to say he didn’t look good. He looked damn good. The combination was powerful, and it hit her first in her belly and next in her knees.

Sex appeal oozed from him.

Which, of course, meant he was here for an escort.

His gaze was running over her just as alertly as she’d evaluated him, so Rielle quickly put herself behind her desk. She tucked her barrette behind her phone and fought the urge to run her fingers through her hair. ‘I’m sorry, but we’re closed.’

He cocked his head. ‘The door was open.’

And that had been a mistake.

‘Did you have an appointment?’ She knew very well he didn’t.

‘No.’ Her question had been sharp, but his blue gaze didn’t flinch. Instead, the lines of his face softened, and she had to lock her knees to keep them from melting. ‘But I’m in a bind. I was hoping you could help me out.’

She lifted an eyebrow. The man might be putting out pheromones by the bucketful, but her brain was still functioning – admittedly better on some levels than others – and she’d begun to sense danger of another sort. The entrapment sort. Luxxor was not a company that took walk-ins. ‘For whom are you looking?’

He walked closer to the desk, and she instinctively gripped its edge. The way he moved, all silent and stealthy. The expensive carpeting absorbed the noise most people made, but the air didn’t even stir at his approach. Her fingers edged closer to the silent alarm, but she didn’t push it.

Not yet.

‘I’m looking for Luxxor Limited. I know I’m late, but I need an escort for the evening.’

Her guard stayed up. She knew they were alone in the office – she was acutely aware of the fact – but her company’s clients knew better than to go spouting off so casually about Luxxor’s line of work. They signed nondisclosure agreements to ensure it. If he was wearing a wire, she wanted to make everything perfectly clear. ‘You need someone to attend an event with you tonight?’

‘Actually, I need someone right now.’

She shook her head. Luxxor went to extremes to satisfy its clients. She’d blush if she thought about how far some escorts went, but there was no way she could accommodate his request. The employees they had working tonight already had their assignments. Even if she did contact someone, the timing was impossible.

And for some reason, that relieved her. ‘I’m sorry, but we don’t have anyone available on such short notice, Mr . . . I don’t believe I caught your name.’

‘Because I didn’t give it.’ He slid his hands into his pockets. The tuxedo looked good on him, but it was failing badly at taming him. Especially when he winked. ‘Tell me yours, and I’ll tell you mine.’

First, I want to state that I hadn’t read the rest of the series when I was asked to review book three, Courting Danger. The only time this became an issue was when the name “Eddie” was dropped out of nowhere. I wondered if he was a key person in the other books. However, Kimberly clued us in on who Eddie was and the past he shared with Rielle so have no fear you’ll be lost or confused for more than a few pages, at most.

With that said…..

If I was basing my review on this being classified as a mystery, I’d say it fell flat.

If I was critiquing this as a romance/suspense book, then I would say it had that in spades.

My only snafu comment about the romance aspects of this tale is this….. Mel aka Darien came to the office seeking an escort to a White House event. Rielle, not an escort, agrees to go with him (with much reluctance) even though she’s not an escort and she doesn’t believe his name is Mel or that he’s really an accountant. At the event, the jig is up. However, she still decides to have unprotected sex with him multiple times. Heck, through the entire book, they never once spoke about protection, partners, STD’s, possible pregnancies. NADA!! I guess a hot bod and great sex makes you forget all those details. As a reader, not so much.

I will say, despite those factors, the sex scenes were sizzlin.

When it came time to decide on a score, I thought about the lack of mystery and the bedroom blunders. I almost gave this story a 3 but I simply couldn’t because Kimberly had Rielle kicking butt ….. literally!!

You just have to love a woman who can handle herself!!
