~~ Excerpt~~Â
Â
âYouâre studying to be a priest?â
He made himself meet her eyes. âI am a priest.â
She let go of his hand and stepped back.
Her smiled was tight. âIâm glad you found your
path.â
Quiet.
He couldnât quite read her expression. The distance
between them felt like a gorge chiseled into the earth.
âAre you all right, Maylynn?â he asked.
âIâm really happy for you.â Then she added, âFather
Aiden.â
For some reason, her words stabbed him in the gut.
He usually liked when people used his titleâit seemed to imply a certain amount
of trust.
âIâm sorry, Maylynn.â He wasnât entirely sure why
he was apologizing. He just didnât like to see her uncomfortable.
âIâm happy for you,â she repeated.
Then he realized what the problem was. He hadnât
anticipated this.
He moved closer. âIâm so sorry.â
Her forced smile finally dropped. âWhy didnât you
tell me sooner?â
âIt didnât occur to meâŠâ
âThat I might be attracted to you?â
âYes.â
âWhy arenât you wearing your collar?â Anger
prickled the edge of her voice.
âMy motherâs last wish was that I find my father.
Iâve been following her notes. She was convinced he was somewhere in this
area.â
âWait⊠Your motherâs name was Adalina?â
He nodded. With the number of times the shelter was
mentioned in the notes, he figured his mother and Maylynn had met.
A pause.
Anger flashed in her eyes. âYou still shouldâve
told me.â
âIâm sorry.â
âWhyâd you play with me like that?â
âI swear that wasnât my intent.â
âYou knew damn well what was going on. Was it a
gameâsee if you still had it? If you could still get the chicks?â
Under the anger in her eyes, he saw the hurt. He
swore he could feel it exactly, as if it was his own.
He shifted even closer, just in front of her. âIâm
sorry,â he said again. His voice lowered, quieted. âI didnât see what you were
feeling because I was fighting so hard myself. I still am.â
âFighting what?â
âWhat I felt the first time I saw you, what Iâm
still feeling.â
She waited, glaring at him.
âIâm attracted to you,â he said. âIntensely.â
