Author Showcase/Interview and Review of “No Grits No Glory” – Elaine Calloway

 Welcome, Elaine Calloway!!

1. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(Elaine) Thanks, happy to be here! I’ve written since I was young. I’m one of those bizarre people who has every day of junior high and high school written down in journals. As I grew older, I began to write short stories and eventually novel-length fiction. While several of my paranormal/urban fantasy books are available, the main series I’m working on is my Southern Ghosts Series, which readers are enjoying.

2.  Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(Elaine) I’m still learning how, LOL. One thing to note is that writer’s block is different from not being motivated. Or procrastinating because the author is afraid of failure/success/the reappearance of bellbottoms/etc.
I write my books on the computer. To combat a real block, I will hand scribble down notes of what I intend to write, what needs to happen in a specific scene. Somehow the freeness of handwriting breaks through the block. And that’s what it’s all about—tricking your mind into working for you, not against you.

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(Elaine) I enjoy reading (don’t we all?) but I admit I have the bad habit of Netflix binging. There are few truly amazing shows out there, so when the ones I love come on Netflix (LOST, Bloodline, Dexter, The Walking Dead), I get hooked and watch them. LOST was probably my biggest vice. There were a few days where that’s all I did. Laundry and watch 9 episodes of LOST. *looks around, waiting to be judged* That extreme is only for really, really good shows though, which I believe help me as a storyteller so it’s not all wasted time.

4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Elaine) My friends and family know that I write and they have been wonderfully supportive. That being said, I don’t tell anyone at my day job that I write. I have a fortunate situation where I have freedom/flexibility at my day job. As long as deadlines are met, I can balance day job responsibilities and writing.

5. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(Elaine) In no particular order, with the exception of Dennis Lehane being first, here you go: Dennis Lehane, Cornelia Funke, Pat Conroy, Terry Kay, JR Ward, Deena Ward, Tiffany Reisz, Jennifer Weiner, Liliana Hart, and Diana Gabaldon.

6. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(Elaine) You should visit my Pinterest boards! I have photos all set up with who would play which character. (https://www.pinterest.com/elainecalloway/)
I would probably pick the first book in my Southern Ghosts Series, “No Grits, No Glory.” I set the book in Savannah, one of my favorite places on Earth, and I could see it doing well on the big screen.
Cast? Main heroine – Linda Fiorentino. Main hero – Tom Cruise. Heroine’s older brother Declan – James McAvoy.
I’m not one of those huge Tom Cruise fans, but the way he looked in “Rock of Ages” playing a musician is very close to how I pictured the character.

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(Elaine) I’m continuing to write books in the Southern Ghosts Series. Book #3 (Krewe of Souls) comes out Nov 18 and I’m putting the finishing touches on it before sending it to my editor. I have 8 books planned for the series, though I haven’t decided which state to do next. Maybe Tennessee. Or Kentucky. The characters for both those states are vying for my attention and I can only pick one.
My other series, The Elemental Clans, still has 1 more book I want to write. Likely in 2016.

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(Elaine) My books are available on most major retailers like Apple, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. For buy links and to see the order, visit http://www.elainecalloway.com/books/

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(Elaine) Yes! I love hearing from readers and fans.
My website has a contact form here: http://www.elainecalloway.com/contact/

Readers can also find me on Facebook herehttps://www.facebook.com/authorelainecalloway

10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(Elaine) Feel free to reach out to me with any further questions! I also speak to groups about indie publishing and the business aspects of marketing, so use the contact form on my website if you’re interested.
Thanks again for having me here!

Thank you, Elaine, for sitting down with me. It was truly a pleasure!!

Ladies and gents, I want to also thank you for stopping by today. Your visits always warm my heart. Now before you run off to the real world, stick around a bit longer and check out The Southern Ghosts series.

As always, feedback – comments- questions- or a simple howdy is all welcomed and appreciated. *big smile*

Brianna fled to Savannah to escape the voices of the dead. Just when she thought she’d left all paranormal things behind, she discovers her house is haunted. Not just haunted, but haunted by Southern ghosts. These persistent beings not only hide her white shoes after Labor Day, but they leave grits-caked dishes in the sink, and swear to wreak havoc on her life – – unless she helps them.
Steven put Savannah in his rearview mirror years ago to follow his passion for music. When his band splits up and he can’t reach his little sister for weeks, he races home—only to learn his whole family died in a mysterious house fire. The house Brianna now lives in.
Together, Brianna and Steven learn who murdered Steven’s family and become caught in a web of intrigue.

—–> REVIEW <—–
(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

When I first started reading this story, I kept hearing in my head “I See Dead People”. Man, I really want to watch The Sixth Sense again. That movie, like this book, was awesome!

Virginia was, by far, my favorite ghost. Gotta love a woman (ghost) who sings off key just to irritate someone. That’s gonna be me one day (if ghosts are real and I become one).

However, the best parts of the book came towards the end.

Two tear jerking reunions. I mean, I didn’t actual cry, but for softies out there —- grab a tissue. Very sweet!!

I must mention why I gave this story 4❤  instead of 5. Unless I missed it, I don’t think Elaine explained how Begley knew Brianna broke into his office. Did he have cameras setup? If she explained it and I missed it, please let me know.

Review of “Possessing the Witch” – Elle James and “Siren’s Call” – Debbie Herbert

Possessing the Witch by Elle James
Selene Chattox doesn’t know what—or who—she’ll find when she follows her premonition to the river’s edge. When she discovers Gryph Leone, the spirit witch brings the injured stranger home, determined to resist the desire he stirs. But as he heals, she knows fate has brought them together. And as their passion ignites, so does the danger…

Siren’s Callby Debbie Herbert
Lily Borsage is the ultimate siren: gorgeous, aloof, and irresistible to all men in Bayou La Siryna. That is, until Nashoba Bowman returns to town. The Native American kid whose innocent first kiss Lily remembers fondly is all grown up, hot as an Alabama summer—and immune to Lily’s charms. What self-respecting mermaid could resist finding out more?

Witches, shifters, and psychopaths should’ve held my interest but unfortunately I found the stories lacking in intrigue. The whack-jobs’ identities were no mystery at all and their climatic demises were far from climatic. Here I thought a battle between a wolf and lion (Possessing the Witch) would be epic. It was epic…..an epic fail.

Same disappointing battle between Nash/Lily/and their nemesis.

Broken & Twisted by Cynthia Eden (2 Book Reviews)

Release Date: March 31, 2015
Publisher: Avon Romance
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Series: LOST, Book 1

The first novel in New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Eden’s sizzling LOST series introduces the Last Option Search Team, an elite unit that must protect the only surviving victim of a serial killer.

Ex-SEAL and LOST founder Gabe Spencer is accustomed to the unusual in his job. But when knockout Eve Gray steps into his office, he’s rattled. For the mysterious woman is a dead ringer for the heiress thought to be the latest prey of the serial killer who goes by the name Lady Killer.

When Eve awoke in an Atlanta hospital, her past was a blank slate. Then she recognized her own face in the newspaper and vowed to learn the truth. Determined to confront the nightmares hidden in her mind, she never expects to find a partner in Gabe.

As Gabe and Eve work together, their explosive attraction becomes irresistible. Gabe knows that his desire for Eve is growing too strong, bordering on a dangerous obsession, but nothing pulls him away from her. And when another Eve lookalike disappears, Gabe vows to protect Eve at all costs. While Eve may have forgotten the killer in her past, it’s clear he hasn’t forgotten her.

I kept ping ponging between two suspects in this opening tale of the LOST series. I was 95% sure I knew who the whackadoodle was; however, that pesky 5% was nagging at me. I was doubting myself and, for that, I say fan-fucking-tastic job Cynthia. You knew how to spin a suspenseful tale. I loved every moment of it.

It also made me think “blondes really don’t have all the fun”. If I wasn’t grateful before for being a brunette, I am now. 🙂

Release Date: April 28, 2015
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Series: LOST, Book 2

In the second seductive LOST novel from New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Eden, an obsessed Last Option Search Team agent goes looking for trouble—and finds her in the Big Easy.

Dean Bannon comes to New Orleans for one reason only: to track down a missing sixteen-year-old girl. That’s before he meets the drop-dead gorgeous con artist who makes him want to lose his legendary control.

With her past, Emma Castille doesn’t claim to be psychic. She just notices things other people don’t. Like the fear in a runaway’s eyes—or the pain in an ex-FBI agent’s heart. Her chemistry with Dean is blistering, but Emma follows her passion . . . not someone else’s orders.

Then a madman breaks into Emma’s home and leaves a twisted message: You’re next. Now Dean refuses to let her out of his sight until he pries every last secret from her full, sexy lips. And suddenly Emma’s aching to give him everything he wants.

Despite the fact I figured out the twist to “Twisted” long before the stars of the show did, it didn’t deter from the greatness of this tale. Seriously, Cynthia dropped enough “clues” for the readers to solve the mystery before Dean, Emma, and the LOST team. However in this instance, the suspense wasn’t about who the whackadoodle was. No, it was about how the story would end and where because we all know the serial killer would not go quietly. What would be the fun in that if he did? 🙂

Criminal psychiatrist Dr. Sarah Jacobs is all too familiar with the kind of bad boys who belong behind bars. But the dark, dangerous man she meets in the New Orleans underworld is a new kind of ruthless, and all too irresistible.

Jax Fontaine doesn’t claim to be a good guy, but he’s loyal to his own code and brutally honest about what he wants. He and Sarah may be worlds apart, but when they’re skin to skin, nothing matters but the heat between them.

Author Showcase/Interview and Review of “Rubble and the Wreckage” – Rodd Clark

Gabriel Church knows you can’t take a life without first understanding just how feeble life is, how tentative and weak it stands alone. If you desire murder, you hold a life in your hand. Whether you release it to grant life or grip tighter to end it, it is at your command and discretion. Gabriel is a serial killer with a story he wants told. Christian Maxwell studied abnormal psychology in college but chose instead to focus on a career in writing. His background comes in handy when he thinks of writing about a serial killer. He can’t think of anyone more qualified to write the story of Gabriel Lee Church, and do so in the murderer’s own words. It’s been done before, but never with a killer who has yet to be captured or convicted. There was never anything more than a gentleman’s understanding between the two men that Christian would record Gabriel’s life story. The killer did not ask for his complicity in any crimes, nor did he ever ask for his silence. Christian’s interest in the man, though, is fast becoming something more than academic. When the writer and his subject become unexpected friends and then lovers, the question remains: What is Gabriel’s endgame . . . and why does he want his story told?

I was contacted by Rodd and asked to consider reviewing his M/M Romantic Thriller. So I read the synopsis of the book and immediately hopped over to Amazon to purchase myself a copy. Yes, even though he requested me to read/review the book and would supply me with a copy for an unbiased review, I decided this book was worth having in paperback. FYI: Paper books are my drug of choice.

Besides the book summary, which drew me like a moth to a flame, I found the cover eye catching in a “gross but I can’t stop staring” sort of way. Comparison – People who can’t help but drive slowly by a wreck and gawk at emergency personnel working on the carnage, attempting to glimpse what is happening; mouth agape.

Yup, that was me in a nutshell.

Anywho…….

As a fan of Criminal Minds, I like to figure out what makes people tick. Why they do the things they do. Rodd gave brilliant insight into the mind of a serial killer and the person (man in this case) who fell in love with one.

But along the journey, I found myself growing bored with the slow pace of the tale which I can only describe as a dry, written documentary.

I must reiterate though, Rodd demonstrated remarkably well the lure a killer has over its prey.

As for the ending….. not what I expected but not everything can be like you see on tv. HEA don’t always exist.

1. Welcome, Rodd Clark.  For
those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the
readers a little about yourself?
How did you get your start in the writing business?
(RC) I
started writing when I was a young boy.
I remember writing my first book by 16, titled ‘Non-existence Plus’ it
was riddled with errors and never saw the published light.  But it was a labor of love
none-the-less.  I became published quite
recently, feeling that need to mark one more item off my bucket list.  It was a M/M mystery Titled “Short Ride to Hell” and since I really
connected with my main character the next two books of his story quickly
followed suit.  I found a few publishers
interested in the series but being committed and with contracts already signed
I decided to write another book out of my usual genre and found myself enjoying
the character of Gabriel Church.  So I
submitted the new book to another publisher and when the book began to take off
I decided to do a series dedicated to him and his unique story.  I have issues with letting go of my
characters sometimes.  Not that it
bothers me, as long as readers feel the same way.

      2.  Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(RC) Interesting
question, I tell myself that writer’s block is just that point when your
characters are simply fighting to jump beyond the page and breath.  But it is difficult maintaining a schedule of
writing every day when you must also commit to the promotional aspects of
publishing and marketing.  If I encounter
a block I know this is life just telling me that I need to work that area during
the break.

3. Contrary to what some people
envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not
for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing,
how do you spend your time?

(RC) To be
honest there is a serious absence of glitz and glam in my life.  I spend a lot of my time with animals.  And I have a menagerie of pets to occupy any
free time, which is a rarity.  My dogs
and cats are a source of both joy as well as troublesome pains in the ass.  But as a child I saw myself being a writer
and being surrounded by animals, so at least this much came true.  But even as I write these words, I have cats
and dogs that are looking at me with sour scowls which tell me it’s nearly
feeding time once again.

 4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you
write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(RC) I rarely
admit to being a writer.  Although I have
friends who know how I spend my days, I imagine few could actually name a title
for one of my books.  This shows how much
they are interested in me and not what I do in my secret world in front of a
computer screen.  And I guess I kinda
enjoy that. I am proud to acknowledge my successes, but for a writer who hangs
with mostly non-readers, I can always be assured they know I am nothing
special, just one of the guys hanging in the gang.  But between you and me, it is fun when I run
across another writer and we find ourselves slipping from the crowd to talk
about things like writer’s block and marketing ideas, or conversing on where
our next adventures might take us and what people we might develop as our
guides.

5. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top
ten.

(RC) Naturally I have favorites and enjoy the greats like John le
Carre’, Stephen King, Ken Follett, J. R. R. Tolkien and countless others.  But recently I think I enjoy discovering new
faces.  The ones I know to be cresting
the horizon of the literary illuminati very soon.  For me it’s like unearthing some half-buried trinket
left discarded in the sand then pulling it out only to find out how it shines
and offers great value for many to appreciate. The recent authors whom I’ve
found are in the ranks of writers like Allen Renfro, Lee Thomas, Erin O’Quinn,
Marshall Thornton, Dorien Grey and William Kowalski.  Though all are from different genres, they
all bring something special to the table and I’m utterly amazed at the talented
people working in the field these days.
I am forever grateful to join their league and I try very hard to
emulate them in any way possible.

6. If you could choose one book to
go to the big screen, yours or otherwise,
which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(RC) I
would love to see “Rubble and the
Wreckage
” hit the silver screen, and I could easily imagine the New Zealand

actor Antony Starr playing the lead role of Gabriel Church.  He is best known for his Cinemax series Banshee, as I hope your audience may be
familiar with.  I can say with a shy,
coquettish grin that I think he is the epitome of the character of Church.  He is both dashing and rough (and in all the
right areas).  He represents the raw
masculinity in that character I envisioned, and I have to confess to infusing
his beautiful image inside my skull whenever I am writing about Gabriel in a
book or an interview such as this one.  I
think he could easily portray the duality and show both the sensually flawed
nature as well as the morally twisted leanings of a serial killer in love.  It is these traits which made him such an
inspiration to this humble writer.

7. Would you care to tell us what
you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just
whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(RC) I am
working the edits for book two in the Gabriel Church Tales at the moment.  Readers have expressed an interest in seeing
more on the two main characters and the relationship Church has with his pseudo
lover, Christian Maxwell.  I was pleased
to continue the story because as I have stated, letting go is sometimes a
challenge for me.  The book is titled “Behold a Pale Rider” and takes a deeper
study into the men picking up shortly after the conclusion of Rubble and the
Wreckage.  I am also attempting to work
the third book in the series but trying to force myself into closing the
chapter on these characters.  Though this
prospect saddens me more than it rightly should.

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(RC) I
have recently pulled my Brantley Colton Mysteries series from their original
publishers and should be moving them to a new house for a re-release very soon.  All books should be available at most online
vendors, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, KOBO, Google Play I Books, Oyster….  Hopefully they will be in brick and mortar
stores one day real soon.  If readers are
interested in M/M mysteries with a dark edge then I might begin with “Short Ride to Hell”, where we first are
introduced to Brantley Colton and his unusual circumstance.  He moves into book two in “A Cache of Killers” and ends in “No Place for the Wicked”.  I should be releasing them with my current
publisher soon.  I tried to write each
book as a stand-alone novel, but reading them in that sequence works best.  For the Gabriel Church Tales, book one
published by Driven Press and begins in “Rubble
and the Wreckage
” and travels into “Behold
a Pale Rider
”, as I stated with the same publishers Driven Press.  Hopefully by next year readers will see the

conclusion of Church’s tales in what is tentatively titled “Dominion- at the brink of sadness”.  Yes, that title has some ominous overtones,
and I hope offers some insight to the resolutions. But one can never be too
certain.  Because you can’t judge a book
by its cover or its title alone, am I right?

9. Would you please share how your
present and future fans can contact you?

(RC) Well
I suppose since we live in a world of social media I have to include some of
the sites where you can find me. I am always eager to speak to fans and other
writers, so reach out and say hello, I will always respond and thank you for
your visit.

10. Before we conclude this
enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The
stage is all yours.

(RC) I
appreciate the soapbox time, truly I do.
And since asked I’d like to remind readers how much their individual
reviews mean to authors professionally.
If the book stirred some emotional
twinge you hadn’t expected or made you reconsider a previously held viewpoint, then
it’s important that you stop and offer a note in the review sections, as on
GoodReads or Amazon or Kobo.  Even the
briefest of notes, good or bad, allows the author to know they made an impact.  And I value the less than stellar reviews as
much as great ones, fortunately I have fewer than I expected.  They allow me to see what fans want more of,
albeit more erotically charged situations or better characters they can relate
too. My writing has been considered dark and at times disturbing, but I myself
enjoy seeing what the reader has gathered from the work and I’ve made some good
friends along the way during the process as readers reached out to privately on
social media and email comments.  I would
like to build a fan base, as all authors do, and it starts with someone making
a connection and showing they first read the book.  So enjoy then stop by and offer your comments
and suggestions.  They mean a great deal
to the writer, I kid you not.

Ladies and Gents, I hope you enjoyed my interview with Rodd Clark. If
you have any questions or comments for Rodd, by
all means, leave him a message below. Thank you in advance for your visit!

Season of Strangers by Kat Martin (Book Review)

Dedicated, driven real estate agent Julie Ferris is enjoying a day at the beach with her sister Laura when a strange, almost undetectable charge fills the air. Then, under the hot Malibu sun, time stops altogether.

Neither sister can explain their “lost day” —nor the blinding headaches and horrific nightmares that follow—but Julie chalks it up to the stress she’s been under since her boss’s son took over Donovan Real Estate.

Patrick Donovan would be a real catch if not for his notorious playboy lifestyle and matching attitude. But when a cocaine-fueled heart attack nearly kills him, Patrick makes an astonishingly fast—and peculiar—recovery. Julie barely recognizes the newly sober Patrick as the same man she once struggled to resist. Maybe it’s the strange beach experience fueling her paranoia, but she can’t help sensing something isn’t…right.

As Julie’s feelings for Patrick intensify, she’s about to discover how that day at the beach links her newfound happiness with her wildest suspicions..

—–> Review <—–

As a comic book lover, I find nothing wrong with a human falling in love with an alien. Hello, Superman rocks! However, when I found this book in the grocery store, I didn’t realize it was sci-fi. The summary doesn’t elude to it being one. But with that aside, I still didn’t find myself enjoying this book as much as I hoped I would (based on the blurb).

For me, I think it’s rather creepy that…..Two sisters get abducted by aliens and get probed. Very thoroughly, I might add. Ugh!

The older sister, Julie, does fall in love with the alien scientist. Of course, at first, she has no clue he’s merged, taken over, Donovan’s lifeless shell. The same alien who had her probed on the ship later does some “probing” of his own —- human style. *laughing*

But Donovan, or Val (depending who he is at the time), does show more humanity than his “human” counterpart. He does become a better “Donovan” than the actual “Donovan”.

Man, reading that last line back sounds kind of creepy.
