Breathe Into Me by Sara Fawkes (Book Review)

How did my life get so broken? It’s a question Lacey St. James asks herself every day. Stuck raising her little brother in a trailer park while she works a dead end job at a grocery store, she has a stalker ex-boyfriend, a bad reputation, and no way out.

And then she meets Everett, whose presence changes her entire existence.

Everett is an outsider to her small community, in town for the summer housesitting one of the grand mansions off the Mississippi coast. When he saves her in a bar one night, she’s grateful but wary of his intentions. Lacey doesn’t trust most men in her life, but for reasons Lacey can’t understand, Everett is completely captivated by her. He’s determined to show her that life can offer more than she’d ever hoped for, if only she believes in herself. As she works with him to free herself, Lacey desperately yearns to trust him, to move on and perhaps start fresh.

But what happens when she finds out that everything he’s told her about himself was a lie?

While standing in the book section of my local store, I scanned the available books and decided whether I should pick up a ‘tried and true’ author or take a chance on a newbie. Based off the cover and summary, I decided to read a new author.

Her storyline is absolutely relatable to….everyone. Who hasn’t know someone who’s been knocked down repeatedly, been knocked down themselves, but kept on fighting?

When, in this day and age, do we not hear about cyber bullying in the news — in our own backyard?

Even though this story will touch many hearts, I still gave it 3.5 stars because the pace was slower than I like in my story and at times I found myself losing interest.

How to Handle a Heartbreaker by Marie Harte (Book Review)

Series: McCauley Brothers
Book 2 in series
Genre: Contemporary
Format: eBook, Print

Brody Singer took one look at Abby Dunn and fell in instant lust. Abby looks a lot like a woman he once knew, one who died years ago. But is his attraction merely a holdover from a secret crush from long ago? But Abby’s definitely someone different. She’s a lot shier, a lot sexier, and despite her attempts to dissuade his interest, mesmerizing.

Abby isn’t having it. She’s still trying to put her last disastrous relationship behind her and overcome the flaws her ex so kindly pointed out. She’s too short, too plump, too boring, too blah. But somehow Brody isn’t getting the picture that someone as handsome and built as he is should be with a woman far prettier. It doesn’t help that when writing her steamy books, she keeps casting Brody as the hero.

Only Abby can write her own ending. She just has to decide which version to keep: the one where she shows Brody she’s a woman worth keeping and he’s a man worth loving? Or the one where she settles for a rough draft of a life, alone and safe from ever getting hurt again?

I absolutely, positively agree with the message of this story —– Blood doesn’t make you a family. No, the people who care about you, are there for you through thick and thin, those are your family. Also, there is more to being a parent that sharing some DNA. Brody might not be a McCauley by birth but he is a McCauley nonetheless.

Dark Skye by Kresley Cole (Book Review)

ETERNAL OBSESSION

As a boy, Thronos, prince of Skye Hall, loved Lanthe, a mischievous Sorceri girl who made him question everything about his Vrekener clan. But when the two got caught in the middle of their families’ war, tragedy struck, leaving Thronos and Lanthe bitter enemies. Though centuries have passed, nothing can cool his seething need for the beautiful enchantress who scarred his body—and left an even deeper impression on his soul.

ENDLESS YEARNING

Lanthe, a once-formidable sorceress struggling to reclaim her gifts, searches for love and acceptance with all the wrong immortal suitors. But she’s never forgotten Thronos, the magnificent silver-eyed boy who protected her until she was ripped from the shelter of his arms. One harrowing night changed everything between them. Now he’s a notorious warlord with a blood vendetta against Lanthe, hunting her relentlessly.

CAN THE HEAT OF DESIRE BURN BRIGHTER THAN VENGEANCE?

With their families locked in conflict and battles raging all around them, will Thronos and Lanthe succumb to the brutal chaos that threatens everything they cherish? Or will the fragile bond they formed so long ago spark a passion strong enough to withstand even the darkest doubts?

I’ve been a fan of the IAD series since I read A Hunger Like No Other

Why?

Kresley can write a scene where you feel immersed in the battle with the hero and heroine. However with that said, I found the first half of this installment slower than the other fourteen. Around the midway point, Nix showed up and things got interesting. Gotta love that  soothsayer, she knows how to breathe life into a situation.

Despite my ‘eh’ feelings for the first couple hundred pages, I did enjoy Thronos and Lanthe’s story. There was passion, sweet moments, scenes filled with anguish and of course a HEA. Everything synonymous with a Kresley story.

Review

As the front cover proclaims, this collection of short stories are “sweet, steamy, and very satisfying”. For anyone who loves chocolate, I’m sure you’ll be craving a sugary treat after reading any of these stories. For me, I was most definitely thirsting for a a hot cocoa. And speaking of hot cocoa, I’m totally going to try the recipe Elda supplied to her readers in “Buried in Her Heart”. It sounds delicious!

Unbelievable by Lori Foster (Book Review)

JUNE 29, 2010

Fantasy

Brandi really means it when she says “Oh, you shouldn’t have” to her sister’s outrageous birthday gift—a five-day dream vacation to a lovers’ retreat…lover included. Just what is she going to do in paradise with sexy stranger Sebastian Sinclair? Anything and everything she wants.

Tantalizing

Josie Jackson was growing tired of a constant stream of yawninducing blind dates, courtesy of her dear, meddling sister. But Nick Harris wasn’t the stuffy, straitlaced workaholic that Josie had come to expect. In fact, he was just the opposite—tall, dark and ready to give little Miss Josie Jackson a night to remember.

In both stories, the couples fell for each fast and neither couple opened up to the feelings right away. But isn’t that the way in real life (at times)? One person (or both) are too afraid to own up to their feelings for fear of rejection, nerves, etc.

Even though I liked the major players in the two stories, I have to say without Gramps part in “Tantalizing”, I think I would’ve had enjoyed it as much. That old man was a sly fox who still had “game”. Oh yeah, Gramps “got his groove back”. 🙂
