Author Showcase and Interview with Ani Keating

Welcome, Ani Keating!!

1. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(Ani) Hi, Kam. Thank you for having me on your blog (I love the Superman gravatar).

I’m a lawyer by day (please don’t stop reading, it gets better) and a writer by night. I have settled in Portland, Oregon, after trying out a few other places, and I love it here.  Rain, green forests, bookstores, and coffee shops… I had no choice but to start writing. J  It was something I had always wanted to do—since my first short story in third grade—but “real life” took its course. College, law school, job, family… It wasn’t until three years ago that I finally decided to go for it. I got this idea in my head that just wouldn’t leave me alone. Next thing I knew, I was outlining, then opening an account on fanfiction, then posting chapters online, and the rest became a roller coaster ride. I thought I’d be lucky if I had one or two readers and they’d both like it. I ended up finding quite a few more, then an agent, then a publisher.  And now here I am, with my first novel coming out on November 17, 2015.  I’m still trying to catch my breath, but I’m so glad I started.  Being a writer is one of the hardest things I’ve had to do (and I argue for a living) but it has also been one of the most beautiful and fulfilling experiences of my life.

(Kam) Yeah, Superman ROCKS!!

2. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(Ani) Ha ha, this is going to sound really weird, but I actually take a shower.  A really hot shower.  At the first sign of it. I’m not sure if the hot water relaxes me or what—but some of my best ideas have happened in the shower.  And some of my favorite character lines, too.  Let me tell you, there were some days when I was taking three showers per day. My husband thought I’d lost my mind (he was probably right). On the upside, I smelled good, so it all worked out.

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(Ani) Ah the glitz and glam…#someday.  My “free time” is a mythological creature, I’m convinced. The more I look for it, the more elusive it becomes. But when I manage to find it, I usually go to my favorite bookstore, Powell’s Books, sit with some hot chocolate in a corner, emanate leave-me-alone vibes, and read the latest releases. When I’m done with that, I will most likely make dinner (I do love cooking), and my husband and I will watch whatever is on HBO. Glamorous, right?  To step it up a notch, we are taking a mushroom hunting class this fall. I hope I survive it.

4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Ani) Yep, I’m a closet writer, too. My family and some of my friends know that I write, but that’s about it.  They are very supportive, and I’m really lucky in that regard. My poor husband has had to do the dishes for months on end, and occasionally be my guinea pig for whatever scene I’m writing.  And my parents are over the top. They don’t speak much English (I was born in a different country) but from what they can get through Google Translate, they are convinced my book will win the Nobel prize.  🙂 Everyone else thinks I’m a serious, suit-wearing, hose-hating, argumentative lawyer who has an unhealthy obsession with Oxford commas.

5. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(Ani) I’m glad you gave me a limit on this one, or we’d be here a while.  Okay, my all-time, favorite, desert-island authors are: Tolstoy, Jane Austen, Vladimir Nabakov, Pablo Neruda, Mark Twain, John Grisham, JK Rowling, Gillian Flynn, Bella Andre, and Alice Munro.  (I know, kind of an eclectic mix…)

6. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(Ani) Oh boy, this is a tough one. Can I pick two? Or three? I’m picking two. 🙂  I’d love to see Thirty Nights on it because I think it would make my readers really happy.  But it would be hard to cast the main heroine because in my head, she looks like a young version of Liz Taylor.  And my alpha hero looks like no one else… but since this is fantasy question, I’ll go with David Gandy (though I know he is in very high demand).

As for another book, I would love to see the Fairest series/Lunar Chronicles on screen, by Marissa Meyer. The imagination of mixing fairy tales with cybernetics is kind of genius. I have no idea how they would do it, but I would definitely go see it.

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(Ani) Right now, I’m working on the sequel for Thirty Nights, called Ninety Days.  Ninety days follows the journey of the two main characters, Elisa and Aiden. I’m also outlining a separate book based on legends and descendants of certain legendary heroes. That’s all I can say about that one. 🙂 (Mostly because I haven’t gotten far enough into it.)

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(Ani) Thirty Nights will be available for preorder on October 18, 2015 and the release date is on November 17, 2015. You can find it on the following:

Samhain Publishing
Amazon
iTunes
Kobo
Barnes & Noble
Google Play

It is the first book in the American Beauty series. Its sequel, Ninety Days, is still in the drafting stage.

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(Ani) I would love to! Speaking to readers is my favorite thing about writing and I think the reason I keep going.  They can find me on my website at anikeating.com.  On Twitter @AniKeating (https://twitter.com/AniKeating). And on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ani.surnois or https://www.facebook.com/thirtynights

I am also on Pinterest at https://www.pinterest.com/anikeating/

10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(Ani) I would like to thank my readers who have been there from the first chapter I posted on fanfiction and who have been patiently for the book to come out.  There are too many of them to list or name but among all of them, I received thousands of messages that kept me going.  I hope other readers who read this interview will also give Thirty Nights a chance.  And if they do, I’d love to hear from them.

(Kam) I’m sure readers are going to adore Thirty Nights. Speaking of which, lets learn more about the hot read I’m sure fans have been clamoring for.

American Beauty, Book 1
Thirty nights. Two hearts. One fate.

After her parents’ tragic deaths, Elisa Snow wanted nothing more than to escape her past. Eighteen and alone, she fled her quaint English village and moved to the United States. A starving science student by day and an artist’s muse by night, Elisa has slowly built a new life. She never dreamed she would lose everything again.

She is one week from graduation when her visa is unexpectedly denied. Given thirty days to leave the country, she must face the one thing she cannot survive again—saying goodbye and leaving her home. Yet within minutes of her world shattering, she meets a man with the power to piece it back together.

After finishing his tour of duty in Iraq, Aiden Hale traded battlefields for boardrooms, becoming one of the most successful venture capitalists in the nation. But all his wealth can’t buy him reprieve from the horrific memories of war. The only thing that gives him peace is a painting of Elisa.

Drawn together by their invisible wounds, they begin a passionate affair as they race against the clock to defy their pasts—and fight for their future.

Warning: Contains a blistering exploration of desire, sacrifice, and redemption…and love’s power to equalize us in ways laws cannot.

Author Showcase/Interview – Heather Boyd (Miss Merton’s Last Hope)

Welcome, Heather Boyd!!

1. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and
tell the readers a little about yourself?
How did you get your start in the writing business?

(Heather) Greetings. I’m a regency historical romance author, indie
published, and sole female in a testosterone fueled household. (Even the cat is
male) I love old books, old furniture and houses, and research — regency era
of course. My first story was published by a now closed publisher, but I’d
known about self-publishing for years before dipping my toe. I like to learn
new things and use the computer skills I already had so indie publishing seemed
a perfect fit for me.

2. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.
(Heather) I don’t really understand writers block but I totally suffer
from recurring procrastination. Ten minutes of quick fact checking can easily
turn into an hour of ‘I’ll use it one day’ research material. 😀

3. Contrary to what
some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam.
Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not
writing, how do you spend your time?
(Heather) I think I had more glitz and glam in my working life in
Financial Planning. Being an Australian, in Australia, writing my stories in
English settings means I spend a lot of time surfing the web, watching UK TV
shows, and absorbing everything English. Spare time is spent with my family.

4. I know many
writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to
you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Heather) I don’t use a pen name so after years as a published author everyone
that matters knows I write as my day job. My hubby is my biggest supporter, closely
followed by my parents and father-in-law. They’re always interested and asking
for details of the next book to come out.

5. Will you share
with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so
give us your top ten.
(Heather) My reading list changes a lot from year to year, based on
releases and whether the author’s books are available for readers in Australia.
I also read a lot indie author’s work too … Maggie Anderson, Ava March, Jess
Michaels, Sandy Williams, Donna Cummings, Samantha Grace, Wendy Vella, Barbara
Monajem, Mary Balogh, Bronwen Evans.

6. If you could choose
one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise,
which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(Heather) I’ve never really considered my books as movies before now.
When I’m writing I don’t picture real people as characters either. The cover
art models usually come close, but they’re often found after the story is
complete. After nearly 30 stories it’s hard to pick a favorite book. I’ll happily
accept reader suggestions though for which book of mine could be a movie. 🙂

7. Would you care to
tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information.
If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.
(Heather) I’m in the middle of
planning, early writing, on a new series for publication in 2016. The new
series features a side character from An Accidental Affair and navy captains as
my heroes. The series isn’t named as yet, nor do the individual books have titles
either, but its coming together really well.

8. Where can we find
your stories, and is there a particular reading order?
(Heather) Visit heather-boyd.com for the full backlist of titles. To
date I have four published series — The Miss Mayhem Series (Miss Merton’s
Last Hope is the forth and final installment), Distinguished Rogues (6 novels +
1 Novella that releases in December), The Wild Randalls (a complete four novel
series), and the Hunt Club (Gay Regency romance – five books to date). I also
have six erotic regency romance novellas/short stories published too.

9. Would you please
share how your present and future fans can contact you?
(Heather) I love to hear from readers. They can keep in touch via my Website | Twitter | Facebook Page | Mailing list.

10. Before we conclude
this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The
stage is all yours.

(Heather) Thanks for so much for interviewing me. I have a question
for readers of the blog: How often do you read out of your comfort zone?

Now that you’ve met the lovely Heather Boyd, it’s time to shine the light on one of her creations, Miss Merton’s Last Hope.

Book Three, Miss Mayhem Series
Release Date: October 13, 2015
Genre: Regency Historical Romance
Length: 40,000 words novella
Heat Rating: Sizzling

Over the years, Melanie Merton has used every trick and ruse to repel overeager gentlemen callers without ever revealing the real reason she won’t say yes to an offer of marriage. When neighbor Walter George jumps to her defense against slurs cast by suitor number twelve, he also pries into her past—uncovering the circumstances around a tragic loss in her childhood and her aversion to being touched by anyone. But even protective Walter must be kept at a distance for his own good, because despite a growing attraction between them, Melanie must deny him too.

Unlike other men his age in Brighton, Walter George hadn’t considered Melanie Merton for a wife because he was convinced he’d never have a chance to impress his haughty neighbor. But that was before he understood her better, before he uncovered why she kept friends and suitors alike at bay. The right husband could restore the woman he sees into some semblance of the fun-loving child of his memory, but would Walter stand a chance or become just another unlucky suitor?

Melanie Merton hated her life. She hated the clothes she wore. The house she lived in that was no longer hers to manage. The smiles she had to bestow upon her brother’s friends while overlooking their scowls. Even without the responsibilities she’d always enjoyed, and the hours on her own, she never had a moment’s peace. She just wanted a quiet morning, and that never seemed to happen lately unless she confined herself to her bedchamber.

Today, she was entertaining Mr. Linus Radley until his sister, Julia, her new sister-in-law, came down that morning. The forms of proper behavior that had been drilled into her head since she was a young girl made it impossible for her to say what was really on her mind, even when she wanted to. She was too polite to ask Mr. Radley to go away until a more reasonable hour of the day, and had ordered tea and cake to fill the endless minutes until Julia relieved her of this duty.

“It looks to be a lovely day for a stroll,” Mr. Radley said suddenly. “Might I entice you to venture out with me to look upon the sea? With your maid, of course.”

Melanie sighed with what she hoped sounded like regret and not irritation. She would not go out walking with Linus Radley, with or without a suitable chaperone. She had seen enough of him in the past weeks not to want anything more to do with him than she absolutely had to. He was a bully. “Unfortunately, I am otherwise engaged today.”

“Oh?”

Dear God, the man wants particulars.

The Hotter You Burn by Gena Showalter (Book Review)

Beck O’ckley is ruthless in the boardroom…and the bedroom. He’s never been with the same woman twice, and vows he never will. With a past as twisted as his, meaningless sex keeps the demons at bay. His motto: One and done. No harm, no foul.

Harlow Glass is the most hated girl in town. The beautiful artist is penniless, jobless and homeless. When she sneaks into Beck’s home—her ancestral estate—for food, she’s shocked by his early return…and her immediate, sizzling and intense attraction to him.

For the first time in Beck’s life, he can’t get a woman out of his mind. All too soon, friendship blooms into obsession and he’ll have to break her heart…or surrender his own.

Gena, once again, delivered a sexy story with a splash of humor throughout the tale to keep things fun and flirty.

Some of my favorite comedic moments:

“You’d think you told him your hoo-ha is actually a Venus flytrap and his penis will be severed if he has sex with you.”

“Baconator” – Harlow’s name for Beck’s cock.

How they made cleaning toilets sound so dirty. Epicness!!

Folks, grab this book. Trust me, you’re gonna love it!

Thoughts

If you are looking for a man/story that personifies romance then look no farther than “Her Hometown Hero”. Spence outdid himself in courting Sage. His inventiveness will warm your hearts and make you grow to love him, like Sage did.

He truly set the bar high in their relationship but I have faith he will never let her down. Theirs is truly a love for the end of time.

Phenomenal X by Michelle A. Valentine (Book Review)

Good Girl. Notorious Bad-Boy. One Phenomenal Love.

From the mean streets of Detroit rises the newest superstar of professional wrestling, Xavier Cold, better known as Phenomenal X.

His muscular physique makes men cower before him and woman lose their minds with desire.

Anna Cortez is fresh out of college and naive to the harsh realities of the real world. Tired of living under the thumb of her conservative family, she defies them when she accepts a job as the assistant to wrestling’s most notorious bad-boy. Phenomenal X has an animalistic nature that even good girl Anna finds hard to resist.

One night forced to share a bed in a sold-out hotel, lines blur between them and they quickly learn that one lustful night changes everything and neither one of them will ever be the same.

When I was a kid, I was hooked on professional wrestling. I was glued to the screen, mesmerized by the bigger than life stars and the action in the ring. When I reached my twenties, I went to a show. Even though I knew the fights were staged, I was still wrapped up in the wonder of the show.

Now in my thirties, I no long watch wrestling but I can still appreciate the dedication of everyone who constructs such elaborate storylines, builds up the characters, and the showmanship presented several days a week. It’s still awe-inspiring.

For that, I found myself drawn to Xavier. A bad boy wrestler with a huge heart…. HECK YEAH!

My only complaint with this story was…. it was just more of the same. Troubled alpha male who’s traumatic past weaves doubt in his mind that he can love anyone, if he’s even worthy of anyone’s love in return.

Then, boom – pow- whammo, he realizes he can love someone and someone can love him as well.

See, nothing new but it was still a mighty fine story.

 Warning: cliffhanger ending!
