The Hotter You Burn by Gena Showalter (Book Review)

Beck O’ckley is ruthless in the boardroom…and the bedroom. He’s never been with the same woman twice, and vows he never will. With a past as twisted as his, meaningless sex keeps the demons at bay. His motto: One and done. No harm, no foul.

Harlow Glass is the most hated girl in town. The beautiful artist is penniless, jobless and homeless. When she sneaks into Beck’s home—her ancestral estate—for food, she’s shocked by his early return…and her immediate, sizzling and intense attraction to him.

For the first time in Beck’s life, he can’t get a woman out of his mind. All too soon, friendship blooms into obsession and he’ll have to break her heart…or surrender his own.

Gena, once again, delivered a sexy story with a splash of humor throughout the tale to keep things fun and flirty.

Some of my favorite comedic moments:

“You’d think you told him your hoo-ha is actually a Venus flytrap and his penis will be severed if he has sex with you.”

“Baconator” – Harlow’s name for Beck’s cock.

How they made cleaning toilets sound so dirty. Epicness!!

Folks, grab this book. Trust me, you’re gonna love it!

Thoughts

If you are looking for a man/story that personifies romance then look no farther than “Her Hometown Hero”. Spence outdid himself in courting Sage. His inventiveness will warm your hearts and make you grow to love him, like Sage did.

He truly set the bar high in their relationship but I have faith he will never let her down. Theirs is truly a love for the end of time.

Phenomenal X by Michelle A. Valentine (Book Review)

Good Girl. Notorious Bad-Boy. One Phenomenal Love.

From the mean streets of Detroit rises the newest superstar of professional wrestling, Xavier Cold, better known as Phenomenal X.

His muscular physique makes men cower before him and woman lose their minds with desire.

Anna Cortez is fresh out of college and naive to the harsh realities of the real world. Tired of living under the thumb of her conservative family, she defies them when she accepts a job as the assistant to wrestling’s most notorious bad-boy. Phenomenal X has an animalistic nature that even good girl Anna finds hard to resist.

One night forced to share a bed in a sold-out hotel, lines blur between them and they quickly learn that one lustful night changes everything and neither one of them will ever be the same.

When I was a kid, I was hooked on professional wrestling. I was glued to the screen, mesmerized by the bigger than life stars and the action in the ring. When I reached my twenties, I went to a show. Even though I knew the fights were staged, I was still wrapped up in the wonder of the show.

Now in my thirties, I no long watch wrestling but I can still appreciate the dedication of everyone who constructs such elaborate storylines, builds up the characters, and the showmanship presented several days a week. It’s still awe-inspiring.

For that, I found myself drawn to Xavier. A bad boy wrestler with a huge heart…. HECK YEAH!

My only complaint with this story was…. it was just more of the same. Troubled alpha male who’s traumatic past weaves doubt in his mind that he can love anyone, if he’s even worthy of anyone’s love in return.

Then, boom – pow- whammo, he realizes he can love someone and someone can love him as well.

See, nothing new but it was still a mighty fine story.

 Warning: cliffhanger ending!

Grey by E L James (Book Review)

Christian Grey exercises control in all things; his world is neat, disciplined, and utterly empty—until the day that Anastasia Steele falls into his office, in a tangle of shapely limbs and tumbling brown hair. He tries to forget her, but instead is swept up in a storm of emotion he cannot comprehend and cannot resist. Unlike any woman he has known before, shy, unworldly Ana seems to see right through him—past the business prodigy and the penthouse lifestyle to Christian’s cold, wounded heart.

Will being with Ana dispel the horrors of his childhood that haunt Christian every night? Or will his dark sexual desires, his compulsion to control, and the self-loathing that fills his soul drive this girl away and destroy the fragile hope she offers him?

This book is intended for mature audiences.

Seeing the events unfold through Christian’s eyes was enlightening. E L James showed us his softer side, his vulnerability. He seemed almost child-like at times; needing validation of his worth. In “Grey”, I found Christian more likable.

There were several passages revisited (which I knew was to be expected): the contact, bar and a few emails. I actually skipped over several pages because I knew what was going to be said/happen and saw them as pointless to peruse again.

I must say one thing, as I’ve said in the past regarding the movie to my friends/followers, this book backs up my claim THERE ARE discrepancies between the book and movie. That’s why I usually DON’T read a book and watch the cinematic version or vice versa. I will nitpick, as would any true fan.

Below the Belt by Jeanette Murray (Book Review)

Athletic trainer Marianne Cook is ready to do whatever it takes to turn the men of the Marine Corps boxing team into fighting machines. After all, her ultimate goal is to land a job training professional athletes. But when she notices a certain hard-bodied marine trying to hide an injury, Marianne realizes that she’ll have to use covert tactics to get him talking.
.
First Lieutenant Brad Costa has waited years for the chance to fight for a spot on the Marine Corps boxing team, knowing he has to push twice as hard to get half as far as his younger counterparts. Brad tries to downplay his injuries to the attractive trainer who has his dreams in her hands, but Marianne isn’t buying it. Maybe it’s time to deploy some targeted flattery.
.
As Brad and Marianne’s attraction turns red-hot, there’s more than one person having a hard time keeping their eyes on the prize…

Is it wrong/bad that I found more enjoyment from the bromances/camaraderie formed during the Marine boxing try-outs than I did the relationship between Cook and Costa?

The soldiers were sarcastic, hilarious, dedicated……

It was a glimpse into the world of our military men and I thoroughly enjoyed it – especially the pamphlet wonderland the men created.

Cute, sweet, funny, and romantic.

With that being said, I  did lower the score because I didn’t feel as connected to Brad and Marianne as much as I did the fellas (soldiers).

I’m sure JM wanted to show the teamwork of the men, but more importantly, her goal was for her readers to feel/see the chemistry between the two main stars. Since I didn’t, it lost a couple hearts. Sorry, JM.

On a final note……. HAWT COVER!!!!
