Programmed For Power: The Tau Cetus Chronicles, Book 3 by Jenna Ives (Book Review)

As the powerful premier of war-torn Tau Cetus, Theus presides over an uneasy post-apocalyptic peace. Many plot against him, including a traitor on his own High Council as well as one rogue woman who dared to steal a precious keepsake from his past. Capturing Leora Smith offers Theus a chance at personal revenge, but she awakens emotions in him he thought long dead. Even so, it takes an assassination attempt to spur Theus to reassess a future with either this prisoner who makes his blood run hot or the Beautiful Doll robotic lover who’s the perfect match for his lifeless existence.

Once again, Jenna was able to deliver undeniable heat between the two main stars while also orchestrating a well thought-out plot….. Who’s the traitor targeting Theus?

As for the sex aspect of the science fiction tale, there were multiple occasions when Theus still sought out a bot to get sexual release. With Keira performing fellatio at 19mph, Theus has grown accustomed to “quickies”. Maybe that’s why he enjoyed the slow burn of a real woman (Leora) performing oral on him.

Real versus plastic?
Real wins again!

Now back to the plot, don’t expect Theus to go down via gunshot or stab wound. The traitor had other plans for him but, as you expected, the hero comes out victorious again.

Award-winning author Jenna Ives writes for several different publishers under a variety of names, but mostly the reason is to keep her poor sainted mother (who used to read sweet Harlequin novels) from having a heart attack over how sexy modern romances have become! And Jenna certainly DOES write sexy… You can visit her at www.jennaives.com

Grandma Must Die by Maureen L. Bonatch (Book Review)

Author: Maureen L. Bonatch
Series: A Touch of Magic Series, Book 1
Genres: Paranormal Romance, Science Fiction & Fantasy

Carman has worn out more towns and last names than impractical shoes protecting the secret of her magic blood. But when a friend goes missing, and another is infected with a deadly spell, Carman must choose. Expose her magic blood by curing the spell—or stop the infection from spreading by killing the source…the grandmother.

Magic bounty hunter Dylan has scoured libraries of banned magic paraphernalia seeking a method to distinguish genuine witches from impersonators. He suspects unorthodox librarian Carman might hold this information tighter than the hair he’s dying to unleash from her bun. With a past as hidden as his sleeve of tattoos, Dylan discovers he’s been used to gain Carman’s trust and their passion risks more than mixing mortals and magic.

…once she’d started Carman couldn’t stop,

the book beckoned. Pressing its spine against her palm, begging her to search within the pages to find the answers she’d unconsciously sought her entire life. As she lifted the book, her scalp tingled and her hair elevated like a halo.

“Whoa.” Dylan shielded himself with his hands. “Put it back, slowly, because this is reminding me too much of the incident with the chest. Having my apartment blown up from magic isn’t covered in my rent.”

The plastic evaporated in a puff of smoke in Carman’s hands and the book unsealed with a sigh. She smiled, the welcoming warmth emanating from within its pages against her palms. Why had Mother kept her from this? This is what she’d been waiting for.

As curiosity overtook his common sense, she detected Dylan’s cautious approach. He stood close enough to peer over her shoulder into her book, but far enough away to avoid touching her.

After the shockwave the last time their skin met, he probably worried he’d ruin another pair of pants. Carman closed her eyes, absorbing the power from the book. The delicious feeling evoked a sensation like melting chocolate, sweet and satisfying.

“I remember hearing about her, Esmeralda Wrath. I wonder if this was her book?” Dylan’s warm breath caressed her shoulder.

Carman opened her eyes and examined the page. To stare right at a photo of the most powerful witch of all time…her grandmother.

I want to start off this review discussing the basement under the library. The area, which housed magical artifacts, reminded me of two great shows — Warehouse 13 and The Librarians. The basement was truly a wonderland for the magically gifted humans. Heck, it’s pretty impressive for the “normal” folks, too.

Speaking of normal folks, I was glad Maureen finally enlightened me what the heck an m ‘n’ m was on page 165 (in paperback). I knew she wasn’t referring to the sweet treat and was pleased to learn it stood for magic mimiker. With that bit of knowledge tucked away, the previous passages made more sense and proved to be more enjoyable.

All in all, this story was cute. I wasn’t blown away by it, but I also wasn’t bored out of my mind either.

Would I recommend it to others? Sure. I definitely think many readers will find this witchy tale most entertaining.

Now with that said, I’m off to watch The Librarians.

(Update: It was pointed out to me by Sophia Kimble (visitor – see comments below) that Maureen actually stated what an m ‘n’ m was on page 68. I want readers to have accurate information, so I felt this revelation needed to be shared. Sorry for any confusion I might’ve caused.)

Who needs a guard dog when you have a gargoyle at your disposal and where can I get one? 🙂

This book was non-stop action and will please the readers who love magical stories. Yes, this book is short but the page count didn’t hinder the quality of the work.

Great job, Rebecca.

FYI: Not kidding about wanting a pet gargoyle. Is there a store for this? Maybe, Gargoyles R Us…. HA!!

A Fistful of Evil & A Fistful of Fire by Rebecca Chastain (2 Book Reviews)

Fistful of Evil: Madison Fox, Illuminant Enforcer Book 1

Madison Fox just learned that her ability to see souls is more than a sight: It’s a weapon for fighting evil. The only problem is she doesn’t have a clue what she’s doing. On the positive side, her money problems are over, she’s possibly discovered her purpose in life, and her coworker is smoking hot. On the negative side, evil creatures now actively hunt her, and deadly experiences are becoming the norm.

When she thinks it couldn’t get worse, a powerful evil sets up shop at a local hotel’s video game convention, and it’s got its eye on more than the gaming geeks: it is hungry for Madison’s soul. Madison needs to become an expert illuminant enforcer overnight to save her job, her region . . . and her life.

A Fistful of Fire: Madison Fox, Illuminant Enforcer Book 2

Madison Fox survived her first week as California’s newest illuminant enforcer, defending her region against imps, vervet, hounds, and one lascivious demon. If her grumpy boss, Mr. Pitt, was impressed, he hasn’t told Madison. In fact, there’s a lot her boss has been closemouthed about, like the dark secret haunting his past.

But Madison’s problems are just igniting. Neighboring regions report an uncharacteristic flare-up of evil, fire-breathing salamanders blaze unchecked across the city, and Black Friday looms. Trapped doing cleanup amid mobs of holiday shoppers, Madison watches from the sidelines as dubious allies insinuate themselves in her region.

As suspicions kindle and the mysterious evil gains strength, Madison must determine who she can trust—and whose rules to follow—before her region and career go up in flames.

Sizzling with adventure and sparking with magic, A Fistful of Fire is fused with Madison Fox’s trademark blend of humor and ass-kicking action.

A Fistful of Evil – Many of us have stories from HELL about our first day at a new job but I don’t think anyone can top Madison’s. She’s been thrust into the world of imps, hounds which aren’t man’s best friend, and one seductive demon.

Her induction into this new career as a illuminant enforcer had loads of comedic moments. After you read how she handled the imps, I think you’ll be laughing right alongside Doris. Her first encounter with a hound (evil dog) was just as funny. How she survived the night was beyond me. I think luck was definitely on her side…….or was that Nico. That man was a tall drink of water and so was Dr. Love. Rose was pretty hot in her own way too. With her looks, smart-mouthed and sassy attitude, Rose can be my “babysitter” any time —- day or night. 😉

Great story, Rebecca!!

A Fistful of Fire – Madison is back, still riding high off her first demon kill. You think that would earn her some brownie points at work, but nope, she’s put on mall duty the day after Thanksgiving. Worse, her assignment was to handle citos aka invisible spiders. So now she has handle crazy-ass bargain hunters and spiders……at least she had an enforcer handbook to educate her about all the creatures inhabiting her region.

Let me tell you a little about this book and why it is so wickedly awesome. It can communicate and not in just one word sentences. It gave itself a name – Val (Valentine), had an attitude, and even created a middle finger on one of its blank pages.

It also provided useful intel when her path crossed with other “beings”: prajurit (fairies), giant human-size salamanders that start fires, wraith, pooka (wooly mammoth that can shift into a Great Dane and a man), and much more.

BTW: All the creatures/beings she encountered were defined in her hand-dandy talking guide aka Val (Valentine).

See what I mean…..WICKED COOL, right?

Flames of Auriel by Erin Bedford (Book Review)

51at5hbk2kl

When living in a world where the prince isn’t always charming, the princess has a mean right hook, and angels are worshiped like gods, love isn’t always easy to find.

Zoe has never been the lady-like princess she’s read about in fairy-tales, even with her very own handsome prince to sweep her off her feet. She doesn’t know what she dislikes more, his arrogant smirk or the way his grey eyes darken when they fight. Angels help him if he doesn’t keep his hands off the help.

Asher won’t admit it, but he admires the fighting style of his warrior princess. She reminds him of an avenging angel the way her fiery hair whips around her as she takes out her challengers. Dark One help him, but she is as tough an opponent on the battlefield as she is off.

With unknown and unwanted feelings starting to emerge between the two royals, a single goodbye turns into a frantic search for a missing princess. Asher has to find the one woman he never thought he’d miss and keep his kingdom safe from an old enemy. If he fails, the angels may not forgive him this time.

Warning: For mature readers.

“Get out of my way, Asher.”

He placed his arms on either side of her, blocking any chance of an easy escape. She held back a shiver as he brushed his fingers over her cheek so he could tuck her hair behind her ear. Asher was not about to let her ruin their day with her temper.

“Not this time, Zoe.”

Before she could protest, his lips found hers in what she could only describe as the most searing kiss of her life. Unlike the kiss in the hallway, which had been curious and uncertain, not at all what she had expected from him, this one was everything she had expected his kiss would be – relentless and overpowering. She thought about biting him for a second, but instead found herself caught up
in it. She would feel ashamed later at how easy it had been for her to just slide her hands through the curly tendrils of his hair and kiss him in return.

While she had only been kissed by one other person – Garrett – who was always gentle and giving, this kiss was like a battle on its own. Their mouths clashed together as each of them fought for dominance. She found herself moaning into the kiss and forgot for a moment who she was kissing, but eventually they had to end the kiss to breathe. They gaped at the other at the magnitude of what just happened.

Asher recovered first and leaned his forehead against hers. He brushed his fingertips along the curve of her breast, causing a sharp intake from her. He held her gaze with his for a moment and tried to memorize the details of her face in that moment. He noted how her amber eyes had darkened and her face had flushed all the way down to her heaving chest. Asher could not think of a time when she was more beautiful than right then.

“If you want me to stop seeing them I will. Just say the word and I’m yours.”

Zoe’s entire body tensed up at his proposition and for a hot minute she was tempted to say it, but pride would not allow her to give him the satisfaction of knowing how much it affected her.

She leaned her face into his, “What makes you think I care?” She shoved him away and ran as fast as her skirts would allow her back toward the palace.

Asher and Zoe argued more than any couple I have ever met but it was all foreplay. It took a while for me to see this because I had trouble warming up to him — much like her. He was kind of a dick for the first 1/2 of the book. He didn’t hide his indiscretions which made Zoe feel embarrassed, hurt, and rightfully pissed the hell off.

His most douchebag move came about when Garrett entered the scene. Asher became jealous of her bodyguard/companion and rightfully so. Garrett is sweet, charming, a true champion and quite easy on the eyes. Plus, he is her childhood friend. I can see why the green eyed devil made an appearance but the actions Asher took for Zoe to claim him was a dick move — literally. He knew Zoe would come into a certain room so he had a chambermaid giving his “head”the royal treatment to get a reaction out of Zoe. Yeah folks, he actually said that after he claimed his intent wasn’t to hurt her.

Zoe reacted with claw towards the chambermaid but not with him…. Nope, she kissed the daylights out of him. Don’t think many would’ve reacted so kindly. Me included.

It was actions like these that made me chanting for Garrett. Too bad TEAM GARRETT lost. But don’t fret, his future love interest was introduced. Of course, he will have to wait a few years before they can steam the sheets.

Side note: the creation of a potion that can destroy male seed to avoid unwanted pregnancies was highly creative.
