Down and Out by Kelley R. Martin (Book Review)

“Tattooed package of sin.”

That’s how Savannah Ryan would describe her new boss, Declan Whitmore, the deliciously tatted and pierced fighter who holds the top spot in Boston’s newest underground fighting organization. She’d also describe him as bossy, arrogant, and–depending on what he does to piss her off that particular day–an asshole.

It’s that aloof attitude, along with Savannah’s witty comebacks and tight little body that land her on his radar. Unfortunately for her, Declan is relentless when he sets his sights on someone, both in and out of the ring. Unfortunately for him, this recently reformed bad girl is trying to go straight after heading down a dangerous path. She’s not going to make this easy for him. In fact, she’s going to make it–and him–very, very hard.

Declan’s not worried, though. He’ll have Savannah come hell or high water, because if there’s one word he’d use to describe her, it’s “MINE.”

How freaking excited am I to have stumbled across this pulse pounding number while out shopping!!!

The sex scenes weren’t over the top (translation: not über kinky). However, it was the emotional ride that captured my attention and had me turning the pages until I reached the very end.

Declan was sweet, sexy, and touchy-feely (physically and mentally). However don’t let me put a mansy pansy image into your head. He was all MAN. He literally tossed her over his shoulder.

Mmmm, caveman…….

Oh yeah, that assertiveness definitely has its place.

Check this book out, folks.

Hell, check out all her books. I know I will be…….

Pucked by Helena Hunting (Book Review)

51vrhstxzhl-_sx322_bo1204203200_

With a famous NHL player for a stepbrother, Violet Hall is well acquainted with the playboy reputation of many a hockey star. She isn’t interested in legendary team captain, Alex Waters, or his pretty, beat-up face and rock-hard six-pack abs. When Alex inadvertently obliterates Violet’s misapprehension regarding the inferior intellect of hockey players, he becomes much more than just a hot body with the face to match.

Suffering from a complete lapse in judgment, Violet discovers just how good Alex is with the hockey stick in his pants. Violet believes her night of orgasmic magic with Alex is just that: one night. But Alex starts to call. And text. And email and send extravagant—and quirky—gifts. Suddenly, he’s too difficult to ignore, and nearly impossible not to like.

The problem is, the media portrays Alex as a total player, and Violet doesn’t want to be part of the game.

At first Alex’s shyness, gentlemanly ways towards intimacy was cute but that changed rather quickly for me. Asking to kiss a woman for the first time —- sweet. Asking to afterwards is weird. The “May I” or “Is this ok” was borderline annoying. However that wasn’t close to annoying as the overuse of the word beaver.

HH kept referring to a vagina as beaver (Canadian slang term). Again the joke was funny at first but after several dozen times later, I was so over it and pretty much over this book.

Examples of “beaver references…..

1.) “had more than one round of fill-the-beaver-hole in a night”
2.) “How’s your beaver?” (post sex text)
3.) “I’m glad your beaver made a full recovery.” (another text)
4.) My beaver is so excited she’s gnawing at my underwear.
5.) During a waxing section, she refers to the hair as “beaver pelts”.
6.) beaver image throughout the book.

There are many more instances like these but I think you get my drift. Yes, I’m rolling my eyes AND shaking my damn head!!!!

Other parts of this tale irked me as well….. HH worn out use of MC (monster cock). I get it already. The man is hung like a horse. Move on already!!!

With a sexy cover and book summary, I thought this book was going to be golden. Unfortunately, it didn’t make a lasting impression. I definitely won’t be reading it again.

Bad Romeo by Leisa Rayven (Book Review)

While performing the greatest love story of all time, they discovered one of their own…

Cassie Taylor was just another acting student with big dreams at her prestigious performing arts college, then she met Ethan Holt. She was the good girl actress. He was the bad boy on campus. But one fated casting choice for Romeo and Juliet changed it all. Like the characters they were playing on stage, Cassie and Ethan’s epic romance seemed destined. Until it ended in tragedy when he shattered her heart.

Now they’ve made it to Broadway where they’re reunited as romantic leads once again, and their passionate scenes force them to confront the heartbreaking lows and pulse-pounding highs of their intense college affair. For Ethan, losing Cassie was his biggest regret, and he’s determined to redeem himself. But for Cassie, even though Ethan was her first and only great love, he hurt her too much to ever be trusted again. The trouble is, working with him reminds her that people who rub each other the wrong way often make the best sparks. And when it comes to love, sometimes it’s the things that aren’t good for us that are the most irresistible.

When I first started reading this novel, the flip flopping from past to present was slightly annoying. It was happening too frequently and almost drew me away from what was happening now. However, the deeper I got into the story, I started to see its value.

I’m not sure if I’m a fan of the characters. For the most part, Ethan repeatedly came across as a jerk and Cassie seemed like a desperate woman. A bit too needy for my tastes. But on the other hand, they made each other better people as their story progressed.

When you read the emails he sent her, especially the final one, I’m sure you’ll be mentally saying “aww” or something to that nature.

His sweetness and her sudden backbone will have me tuning into the next story — Broken Juliet

The Troublemaker Next Door by Marie Harte (Book Review)

When Flynn McCauley meets Maddie Gardner, sparks fly. She hates men. He’s not into relationships. She lost her job. He fixed her sink—but that’s not all he wants to fix. When a ride home turns into a lot more, Maddie and Flynn decide to keep things strictly casual. Strictly sexual. They won’t date. And they end up not dating…a lot. But soon Flynn wants more from the wary redhead. If he can just keep her distracted long enough to burrow under her skin, Flynn might convince Maddie they have a shot at real happiness. That’s if Maddie can overcome her past to take a chance on the future.

This is my first time reading anything by Marie and I can say (without any doubts) I LOVE HER WRITING SKILLS!

I laughed my tush off watching the McCauley brothers interact. And little Colin, he was just way too cute for words. I can’t wait for Karma to catch up to Brody for creating a devious little con man. When he has kids of his own, the uncles are sure to make sure his kids give daddy hell. Payback is a bitch, Brody!

HA!

As for Flynn and Maddie — Dayum! For a couple who aren’t technically a couple, they sure sizzled every time they got near other. The sex scenes were deliciously HAWT – bondage, BJ’s in vehicles, sex in back room of a club, phone sex, and the constant teasing of each other.

I can’t say how much I loved book one in the series. Yes, I already preordered book 2-4. *big smile*

Mike’s Way Back & Gabby Revealed by Amy Gregory (Book Review)

When Detective Mike Sterling left the Chicago PD and returned to his hometown of Renlend Kansas, he tried to convince himself it was so his mother could stop worrying. The truth was, even Renlend wasn’t going to vanquish the dreams that tortured him at night.

When Taryn Watts landed in Renland Kansas to design a client’s new cooking school she intended to stay just long enough to do the job and then go right back to her life on the East Coast.

When Taryn and Mike found themselves sharing a booth, one thing was certain, neither one of them thought it was a good idea. Mike still wasn’t over his ex-wife’s betrayal, and when Taryn found out Mike was a cop she wanted to run all the way back to Connecticut and never look back, but she couldn’t… Sitting outside his home late at night she watches him fight against his demons. Demons she already had too much experience with firsthand.

When Mike finally admits there is no way to outrun his demons, Tayrn knows she’ll do anything, or be anything, to help Mike find his way back.

Quick Thoughts

This story marks my first taste of Amy’s writing skills and I have to say –  this chick knows how to create a story that keeps you turning the pages. The characters were likable and at no point did I find the story dragging. In fact, I finished it the same day I picked it up – couple hours later actually. It was fun, flirty, and just all around a great read. Good job, Amy!

Gabby James didn’t have the idyllic childhood many in her little hometown of Renlend, Kansas had. High school was a living hell, but when she graduated she couldn’t bring herself to leave Renlend. The town was her prison, but her family’s bookstore, The Looking Glass, was her one true love. It was the place she could run to, and escape the prying eyes of the ones who taunted her.

Shane Compton was a literary agent in one of the most prestigious publishing houses in New York City. He found no greater rush than finding the next big talent, someone who could take the written word and turn it into an art form. In the span of one rude phone call Shane was drawn into the mystery of just who the fiery new author from Kansas was. When everyone else in the office refused to deal with her, Shane willingly accepted the challenge. There was no logic to the madness, but every time he had contact with her, she drove him wild.

Gabby tried every trick in the book to keep Shane at arm’s length, but he had made good on his promise to come to Kansas. He wanted to pull her out of anonymity, he wanted her in the public eye. Now here he stood, on the sidewalk in front her bookstore, and one look told her he was everything she was afraid he’d be. Too bad she was anything but who he thought she was.
Gabby quickly discovers Shane has more on his mind than just books and with a little help from an ornery matchmaker, he shows her a whole new life through her looking glass.

Quick Thoughts

I think most people, at one or another, have been bullied in some form or fashion. That is why this story will strike a cord with people. In other words, I can see people seeing themselves as Gabby (to some degree).

After I finished this story, two sections stood out from the rest.
1) The letter to Gabby. (Yup, not gonna elaborate.)
2) The final altercation between Gabby and her numero uno bully. All I can say is….. “YOU GO GIRL!”
