Interview with Elaine Calloway

Urban Fantasy – With a Twist
Q&A with Amazon Bestselling Author Elaine Calloway

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself and your books.

A: Thanks for having me here! I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. Journals in elementary and high school gave way to short stories and novellas in college and beyond. Then one day I wanted to try novel-length fiction and I’ve never looked back.

As far as genre(s), I write paranormal & urban fantasy books, but with a twist.

Q: Intriguing! Can you explain?

A: I follow most of the rules of Urban Fantasy. Lots of world-building, a confident hero/heroine, a very specific task to execute. But instead of killer vamps or dark hunters, my characters are a bit more human. My Water, Fire, Earth, and Wind Elemental protagonists have super powers just like many in the genre do. However, it was never my intent to write a comic-book themed story, so I added a twist to ratchet up the tension: My Elemental
characters do have super powers. Yet they cannot show their powers in public. This adds a layer of conflict as they must rescue innocent humans.

Q: How did you come up with the idea for Elementals?

A: I’d been toying with a good vs. evil tale for a while. Then “The Fifth Element” came on TV one night. I’d also read a recent article about how readers were loving books with fallen angels in them. That was when everything came together. So many stories come alive by nuggets of tales having the time to marinate before they gel together. So my Elementals are the good guys, protecting humanity from the evil fallen angels who want to take over.

Q: You’re working on Book Five now? Will there be any more in the series?

A: Maybe. I think Book Five ends on a good note, so any additional books in the series would really be offshoots of the main series. I’m also busy writing my other series, The Southern Ghosts Series, and I have
ten planned for it. Only three are out now, so that keeps me busy typing and writing!

Q: Are your books available at all retailers?

A: Yes, all except Google Play. My Elemental Clan Series is four separate books (with the first one being free) or you can purchase the boxed set of four books for a discounted price. Links are below.

Q: Tell us about your other series.

A: It’s called the Southern Ghosts Series. Part humor, part romantic suspense, part ghost stories, part humor. Readers seem to really enjoy the characters in each one. So far books 1, 2, and 3 are set in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana, respectively. Book 4 will take place in Texas and I’m outlining that now. For more info, go to my website here: http://www.elainecalloway.com/books/southern-ghosts-series/

Q: How can readers get in touch with you if they want to know more?

A: I love to hear from readers! My website is www.elainecalloway.com and has links to all my books and info. You can also sign up for my Readers list here and that gets you access to sneak peeks, cover reveals, and
discounts that the general public won’t have access to.

Thanks again for having me here, and I look forward to meeting new readers!

Kam: As always it’s a pleasure having you on my blog. I just know readers will love this interview, love your works, and you’ll make many more fans.  Best of luck on all your projects.

Until next time…….

Richard’s Relics by Grace Augustine (Book Showcase)

Richard’s Relics
Acorn Hills Book 5
By Grace Augustine

War and its remnants are cruel. Just ask Richard Dempsey, a Vietnam Vet.

Richard served his turn in Vietnam, but came home a changed man. Plagued with nightmares of the past, Richard and his friends go on a life changing trip back to modern day Saigon. Their hope…to slay the dragons that stole so much of their lives.
Each deals with his own demons. Each has life changing experiences. Each finds out the importance of friendship and family.

EXCERPT:

“Johnny! Goddamn it! Get down!” Richard yelled from his belly, the brush barely hiding him and the other four men on this clusterfuck of a mission. Just as the sound of gunfire erupted, Johnny hit the ground, not even a twitch from his body as bullets whizzed by like a thousand angry, deadly bees.

Richard kept his stomach French-kissing the ground as he crawled over to the young man who was in his charge. Blood covered Johnny’s chest and head.

“Sonofabitch! Johnny, don’t you dare die on me! Do you hear me? Johnny!”

Richard sprang to a sitting position and looked at the clock. The red digital numbers 3:00 am stared angrily back at him.

He ran a shaky hand through the small stubble of hair on his head. Like so many other mornings he woke up drenched in sweat from undying memories: memories of gunfire, yelling, children crying. Memories of clear unblinking eyes and permanent looks of fear frozen into faces as still as marble. The stench of death. Vietnam.

Internationally known author, Grace Augustine, was born in Shelby, Montana and grew up in Cut Bank, Montana (dubbed as The Coldest Spot in the Nation). Her work career has taken her from title and abstracting to administrative assistant church work to co-owning a small town weekly newspaper to her current profession as a floral designer.
Grace thinks of herself as a “Jill” of most trades and is not afraid to learn new things. “If you can’t learn something new each day, there’s something wrong,” she says.
The ideas for her Acorn Hills series stem from her growing up years as well as the issues she has had to overcome along the way. “I’ve developed a new romance category…for the over 50 crowd…I’m calling it the salt and pepper genre. My books deal with real life issues, overcoming adversity, maintaining a positive outlook, and so much more. Just because we are 50 yrs old or older doesn’t mean that life stops. We all still want attention and affection and adventure! We want to experience all life has to offer. We use our age as wisdom to share with those around us. We are sexual, sensual, and sensible,” Grace explains.
Augustine was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in July of 2003. Her thoughts on that “It may slow me down, but if I can at all do it, I will. Sitting and feeling sorry for yourself isn’t the answer…living your life with an open, joy-filled heart is.”

Noah slipped his hand around her waist. “Sweets, there’s an hors d’oeuvres buffet. You missed lunch, right? Go get a snack.”

She looked in the direction he indicated. Several people were gathered around a long table of varied finger foods and pre-poured drinks. “Looks delicious. Did you want anything?”

“Surprise me.” He kissed her cheek and gave her butt a pat.

“Sure.” She smiled at Clarice. “Coming with?”

Clarice shook her head. “No, I’m saving my appetite for dinner.”

“I should do the same. I don’t want to even think about the amount of exercise I’ll have to do to work off tonight.” She put an extra swing in her hips as she walked away, knowing Clarice was watching.

Noah would be watching too. He loved when Stacy wore outfits that showed off her body so people could see how good he had it. Her dress choice of the evening wasn’t just to infuriate the women. Though it was a special bonus to bask in the murderous gazes of the women who beheld Stacy. She could hear them gnashing their teeth and the sound resembled applause.

Tonight’s dress choice was meant to get Noah hot and bothered. Stacy showed off just enough skin to pique his interest and would flirt just the right amount to spark his jealousy. Combine and let stew over the length of a benefit dinner, and Noah would be ready to rip the dress off her the moment they arrived home. With the kids visiting their grandparents this weekend, that all but guaranteed sex against the front door, and on the couch, and possibly the coffee table, before taking it to the bedroom where they could really have some fun.

Noah would be in top form and employing every trick, to remind her that she’d married him, that she belonged to him, and that she shouldn’t be looking at anyone else when she had him. Thinking about the many ways he would impress those lessons on her body made her panties wet. This evening couldn’t end fast enough for her.

She stopped to assess the food offerings. Someone bumped into her and wetness hit her back. “What the hell?” She looked over her shoulder at the man carrying a small plate and wearing an apologetic smile.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I wasn’t paying attention.” He gave a strained chuckle. “At least it missed the dress, right?”

“Could you get me a napkin?” She snapped, not trying to play cordial while whatever had dripped on her was wending its way down her back to the top of her ass.

“Here. Let me uh… get… uh… Excuse me.” He leaned over and put his plate down before reaching past Stacy.

She thought he would grab a napkin. A surprised squeak escaped her mouth when he slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her back.

His hot mouth landed on her skin, followed by his tongue. He licked along her spine, removing the sauce, and sending Stacy’s libido into overdrive.

She nibbled her bottom lip as he trailed his mouth to the edge of her dress, making tiny flicks of his tongue at the top of the crack of her ass. She wiggled to invite him to go lower. Deeper. She wanted to feel his tongue on her rim.

He said in a husky voice, feathering his breath across the upper curve of her ass, “I think I got it all, but I’d better check to be sure. You don’t want to be sticky.”

“No, I don’t.”

Cupping her hips, he slipped his tongue beneath her dress to dance against her tailbone.

Stacy’s clit throbbed. She wished the man, whoever he was, would stop teasing her. Just yank her dress down and lick her asshole the way she wanted. The way he wanted, if his nibbling licks were any indication.

The man lifted his head and she met his gaze over her shoulder. “Maybe you should do it instead.”

Stacy blinked a few times and reality reasserted itself. The man stood with a napkin hovering above her back, wearing a sheepish expression that made him appear younger than he probably was. She snatched the napkin from him and dabbed at the sauce, getting to it right before it touched her dress.

“Sorry, again.” He retrieved his plate and walked away.

She turned to the table and stuffed the used napkin beneath one of the serving platters. This evening needed to be over sooner rather than later, if she was fantasizing about complete strangers licking her. Or maybe she was projecting. She glanced back toward the head table and found Noah engrossed in conversation with one of his colleagues.

Would he have even noticed some man with his face stuffed between her ass cheeks if it had really happened?

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

For the most part, when a woman finds out they’ve been pimped out for money/business opportunity, you’d expect the woman in question to be fuming. I’m talking smoke coming out their ears, one long rant consisting mostly of curse words, and possibly a knee to the balls.

Since this is an erotic short story, you’ll get a willing wife who will DO anything/anybody to further her husband’s career because it also feeds her kinky side.

Yeah, clients pay handsomely for her. Not a million bucks like in the movie Indecent Proposal (1993) but still a pretty penny.

Hell, for four grand, the first client (Grant) got a blow job, sex, and she got some oral attention to every hole. I can’t imagine what a scene involving a million dollars would entail…..

Maybe Zenobia can write something up for us. If anyone can, she is the gal to do it.

Just wait until you read the fantasies before the auction actually begins.

Stacy is one kinky woman and this short story is definitely worth the $2.99 price tag.

Heart Rating System – 1 (lowest) and 5 (highest)

Author Showcase / Interview – Katie Oliver

1. Welcome, Katie Oliver. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(Katie) I’d be happy to introduce myself to your readers. My name is Katie Oliver and I’m currently a writer for Carina UK/Harper Collins.

I realized my dream of getting published a little late in the game. Like a lot of women, life got in the way –
love, marriage, kids – and there was a full-time job to contend with as well.  But with the kids finally grown and flown from the nest, I knew it was time to quit dreaming of ‘someday’ and get serious about writing.

In 2011 I began jotting down some story ideas on a legal pad. The US economy was tanking and ‘austerity’ was the new buzzword in England. Businesses closed on a daily basis, department stores among them; at the same time, Gordon Ramsey’s ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ was a wildly popular television program.

Putting the two concepts together, it got me to thinking…what if a very old, family-owned British department store is facing closure? What if a sharp business consultant is brought in to whip things into shape? And what if the very spoilt daughter of the current department store owner butts heads with said austerity-minded consultant?

I knew as I rapidly filled up notebooks and my laptop screen with words that I was on to something. Prada and Prejudice was the result, and a year later it became my first – and thus far my best selling – book.

2. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(Katie) All writers hit that dreaded wall now and then. I think that when your creative muse fails, you need to give yourself a break from writing. Go and watch TV. Go for a walk. Eat a sandwich. Anything that’ll get you out and away from your laptop is good. Oddly enough, I get some of my best writing epiphanies while I’m in the shower, or walking on the treadmill. Go figure. But it works…because it gives your brain a much-needed break and a change of scenery.

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(Katie) Darling, my life is a non-stop glitzy, glam party! At least, in my head it is…

Seriously, though, when I’m not writing? I’m doing boring things like laundry, or grocery shopping, spending way too much time in the stationery aisle, or reading cookbooks for pleasure. (Don’t judge – it’s fun. I don’t cook anything, I just look at the recipes and say, ‘someday, I will make this.’ My husband and I both know this
for the lie that it is.)

4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Katie) Oh yes, my family knows all about my writing career by now, in tireless detail.  They’re proud of me,
but also a little puzzled. They don’t quite know what to make of having ‘a writer’ in the family. I suspect they think I sit home all day and watch game shows and soap operas while quaffing diet soda and potato chips. I swear, I really am writing, you guys!

They always know when I’m on a deadline, though, because I disappear into my office and become more antisocial than Greta Garbo. Nonetheless, they’re a pretty understanding bunch, on the whole. I love ‘em.

5. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(Katie) This is a tough one! Let’s have a stab at it.

1. Charlotte Brontë. Jane Eyre. Enough said.
2.  Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice. A perfect book.
3.  James Lee Burke. Lyrical, gritty, haunting stuff.
4. Sarah Waters. The Little Stranger. Classic spooky tale.
5.  Sadie Jones. TheUninvited Guests. A ghost story you won’t forget.
6. Helen Fielding. Bridget Jones’s Diary. Unrivalled romantic comedy.
7. Mary Kay Andrews. Her books are a Southern hoot.
8. Marian Keyes. The Mystery of Mercy Close. A funny, moving book.
9. Paul Torday. SalmonFishing in the Yemen. A truly gifted writer.
10. Anne Rivers Siddons. Downtown. A gem set in the 1960s.

6. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(Katie) Well, I could lie and be nice and say I’d choose someone else’s book…but honestly? I’d love to see Prada and Prejudice make the big screen one day. Or even the little screen. I’d cast Felicity Jones as Natalie Dashwood and either Gerard Butler or James McAvoy as Rhys Gordon. (I don’t want much, do I?)

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(Katie) And the check’s in the mail, right? Lol.

I’ve written two romantic ‘dramedy’ books – one finished, one half finished – the first set in Baltimore and the second in New York. I had to put them aside to write, edit, and promote the Dating Mr Darcy and Marrying Mr Darcy series for Carina UK, and now, for my upcoming “Jane Austen Factor” series coming in January 2016.

The new books are re-imaginings of three beloved Austen novels, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. My modern-day retellings are titled What Would Lizzy Bennet Do?, The Trouble With Emma, and Who Needs Mr Willoughby? Carina’s art department came up with gorgeous pop art covers based on vintage designs. I absolutely love them.

That said, I’m itching to get back to my American manuscripts and hope to have three books completed by early next year.

When your name is Lizzy Bennet, and the object of your affections just happens to have the surname Darcy, it seems fitting that life should imitate art, and you should end up together – right?

So when a film crew arrive to shoot Pride and Prejudice at the Darcy estate next door to the Bennet home, and Hugh Darcy arrives home after eight years away, Lizzy knows that their time has finally come. Until, that is, he introduces her to Holly – his fiancée…

What is Lizzy to do? It can’t hurt that Holly knows nothing about country life, and that her ex-boyfriend and film star Ciaran Duncan just happens to be the main star of the new movie. And it’s clear that Lady Darcy does not approve of Holly either. Lizzy knows Holly isn’t right for Hugh, but can she make him see that and get her Austen ending after all?

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(Katie) My ebooks are available online at Amazon, Google Play, Kobo, Apple, and all major US/UK digital retailers. Prada and Prejudice is also available in trade paperback.

Ideally, readers should start with the Dating Mr Darcy series – Prada and Prejudice, Love and Liability, and Mansfield Lark – and then move on to the Marrying Mr Darcy series (And the Bride Wore Prada, Love, Lies, and Louboutins, and Manolos in Manhattan). But they can be read as stand-alone books as well.

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(Katie) Gladly! Visit my website at www.katieoliver.com/ko/blog or:

Follow me on Twitter (@katieoliver01)

10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(Katie) Thank you, Kameron!

It’s been a whirlwind and slightly unorthodox trip from unpublished to published writer. It involved lots of hard work, some sacrifice (TV shows? What TV shows?), and the discipline to meet deadlines head-on and ‘get ‘er done.’ When Carina UK bought my first three books I was still working full time; I had a lot to learn and had to find a way to make it all work. Somehow, I did.

And you know what? I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. Thanks so much for having me over…great questions, I’ve enjoyed it! Hope you have, too.

(Kameron) Katie, I absolutely adored your book covers above. They came across as retro/old school which happens to be my favorite form of art. I’m sure others will find them quite charming, too. With that said, ladies and gents it’s time to hear from you. Ask a question, say hello, rave about her…… Just leave us a comment! 🙂
