Author Showcase / Interview / Review – Theresa Braun (Dead over Heels)

Welcome, Theresa Braun!

  1.  For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(Theresa) I’m a writer of horror, and sometimes romance. I joke that there is a common thread between the two, since they both deal with high levels of extreme emotion—fear and love. And, with rejection and betrayal being linked to romance, it can easily become horrific. How did I start writing? I’ve always enjoyed being creative. When I was younger, I was more of an artist, painting and drawing (which I still do on occasion). Then at some point I shifted into creating stories. It became a great way to escape. And, there’s a thrill in creating an entire world with words.

  1. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(Theresa) I’ve been a victim of writer’s block. One year it was so bad that a friend of mine got me a book on how to overcome it. She meant well, but it kind of made me feel worse. I say this jokingly, of course. But I’ve learned to cope with it much better. I’ve come to understand that sometimes a particular story is not working or coming along at the moment and it needs to sit. That’s when starting a different story comes in. By doing that, you aren’t beating your head against the wall and forcing something that isn’t coming along. If that doesn’t work, I use the time to network or market some of my published books. However, one of the biggest things that I would encourage writers to do is to connect with other writers. Having someone to talk to about “author problems” is really helpful. I’ve gotten out of several ruts that way, and I’d like to think I’ve pulled a few friends out of theirs, too.

  1. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(Theresa) I lead a fairly ordinary life. By day, I teach high school English. By night and weekend, I’m either writing or spending time with family and friends. I really enjoy going to the movies, concerts, comedy shows, or festivals. Another thing that I make sure to do is read as much as I can. I think it was Stephen King who said if you don’t have time to read, you can’t be a writer, since they go hand and hand.

  1. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Theresa) Everyone in my life knows I write. There are times I wonder if I should have come up with a pen name so I can hide a bit when I want, especially if I’m tackling a tough subject. But, in the end, I’m glad I’m out of the closet, so to speak. My mom has read all my stories so far, which is so nice. And, my dad, who hates to read fiction (he only reads non-fiction) has attempted to read a few of my stories. They’re both somewhat conservative, so it makes me feel good that they support me. A couple of my friends have read my work, but some don’t like horror. I get that and am totally okay with it. As much as I am grateful to have the support, I’d still be writing if I didn’t. I suppose it would be tougher, though.

  1. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(Theresa) That’s a difficult task but here goes (and this is not in order of importance): Bram Stoker, Mary Shelly, Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Margaret Atwood, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edgar Allan Poe, and Shakespeare. (F. Scott Fitzgerald and Franz Kafka, if I could squeeze in 2 more).

  1. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(Theresa) I’d like to see more of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories turned into modern movies. Some of the older ones really stray from the plot and add random characters. “The Fall of the House of Usher” would be a great movie if it were done right.

I would cast Michael Fassbender as the narrator. Roderick Usher would be played by Tom Hiddleston.

Madeline Usher is a difficult one to cast, but I think I would go with…..

Mena Suvari

or Chloe Grace Moretz.

There would be Oscar buzz for this flick, I can just see it.

  1. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(Theresa) I have a few irons in the fire. One is a tale about a group of satanic teenagers. I joke that I have drawn on my experience as a high school teacher for it. Another is about a therapist who travels through a mirror. What happens on the other side and what she has to do to deal with it are the crux of the story. And, I have my eye on an anthology that is looking for tragic or dark love gone wrong. That’s right up my alley, so I’m cooking up a plot and some characters as we speak.

Kam: Your story ideas sound like they will be interesting reads. Can’t wait to see the complete works!!

  1. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(Theresa) You can find me on almost all sites where ebooks are sold. I usually direct people to Amazon, but that’s just my preference. My website is also a good place to find me. It’s currently getting a makeover and there will be more and more things on there as it evolves. There’s no reading order, since all of my stories are stand alones, at least for the time being.

  1. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

  1. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(Theresa) I’d just like to thank you for this opportunity to share my thoughts on writing. And, I’d like to thank anyone who has or will take the time to read my work. There are so many amazing writers and stories out there, so it makes me happy when people stumble upon mine and enjoy them.

~~ Closing remarks ~~

Ladies and gents, I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to visit us. I had a great time learning more about Theresa Braun and I’m sure you did as well. Before you run back off to the real world, please take a moment to step into the supernatural world created by Theresa. Below, I’ve shared a spooktacular tale, Dead over Heels, and my thoughts on it.

Enjoy and thanks!

Short story: 38 pages

Veronica’s first date with Sebastian not only stirs up a powerful attraction, but also a series of supernatural events that will tear them apart.

After countless hours of dead end online dating, Veronica meets up with Sebastian at a reportedly haunted restaurant, since he knows she has a fascination with the paranormal. While enjoying their meals and each other’s company, they share a shocking supernatural experience. Their romantic connection is overshadowed by the ghosts of their own pasts that threaten to destroy their budding relationship. Veronica decides she must return to the restaurant to face her past and dig up more answers. Unfortunately, she realizes she must go back, this time with a reluctant Sebastian. In the end, they join forces against the evil that stands between them, but will they make it out alive?

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

Whether I am reading a mystery, science fiction, supernatural, or romance novel/novella, I look for several items to gauge my score on. Does it have a nice opening segment? Does it have an interesting plot? Does it have engaging characters, and do I feel the chemistry between said characters? Does it have an end that leaves me eager for a sequel or to read the story over again and again and again?

I can safely say I answered yes to all the questions above.

As a fan of science fiction/paranormal shows such as Twilight Zone and Supernatural, I love storylines that tap into the unknown. In Dead over Heels, we watch as the past meets the present in the forms of spirits reliving traumatic moments, aka their deaths by the same murderer.

As you can imagine, the living playing unwilling bystanders to this horrific scene is one thing — the victims being someone near and dear to your heart is another matter entirely. It amplifies the experience 1000%.

Now I mentioned the importance of a solid ending. For fans of the ghosts/spirits, I assure you this ending was perfection. . It wasn’t your typical ending to a ghostly tale, and I like my plot twists.

Well done, Theresa. You wrote a spooktacular short story!

Excerpt

“Before we go, there is something I have been meaning to do for quite a long time, Corrine.”

“Oh?”

Braxas let go of her hand as well, and she looked from one to other with suspicion.

“I think you need to be reassured that you belong to Braxas and me. That we are both fully committed to you.”

“I believe you,” she threw in quickly. Braxas assumed that she did not need her seer abilities to know where this was heading.

Gabe however, continued as if she hadn’t spoken. He held up his right hand in a fist, his knuckles facing forward and popped his forefinger up. “You ran from us.” Next up came his middle finger. “You didn’t tell us where you were going.” His ring finger followed. “You lied.” Then his pinky. “You’re very haughty.” And finally his thumb. “You are way too stubborn for your own good.” He tilted his now open and raised palm to the right, poised to strike a particularly beautiful derriere.

“Anything else?” she responded in exactly the haughty manner that Gabe’s fourth finger had coincided with.

Gabe smiled slyly. “That’s reason enough for now.” He lowered his hand and placed it on his knee. “Hike up your dress and come lie across my knees.”

Corrine leaped to her feet. “So you can spank me like some wayward child? I think not.”

“No, so I can spank you like a lover spanks his woman when she aggravates the hell out of him.”

Corrine’s mouth opened on a silent O, and a blush swept over her face and neck. Braxas inhaled her sweet scent of arousal and felt the pressure of his cock straining against the zipper of his jeans. Gods, he wanted to be inside of her. “That shade of rose looks lovely on your cheeks.”

Corrine’s head whipped in his direction. “You’re just going to let him do this to me?”

Braxas chuckled. “Let him? Hell, I encourage him. I have no doubt that all three of us are going to enjoy it immensely.” He smiled widely at her. “Especially if that lovely rose color blooms across your ass as well.”

She opened her mouth as if she had something to say, but shut it just as quickly. She took one step towards Gabe and paused, looking from one to the other. Braxas knew she was excited by the prospect of being spanked by Gabe while he watched, but he also sensed her trepidation. In the end, fear won out, and their little doe, temporarily mesmerized by headlights, broke her own spell and bolted out the door.

Gabe stared at the empty doorway as he spoke. “Tell me something, Braxas. Do cougars like the chase as much as wolves do?”

Braxas smiled widely again, but more for himself since Gabe still stared straight ahead. “Indeed we do.”

It’s a difficult task writing a story that has a solid plot, good foundation for the next installment in a series, and has the right amount of heat without scenes coming across as sexually repetitive. When an author (or authors, in this case) orchestrate a ménage scene, they attempt to deliver moments where each orgasmic driven word leaves you fulfilled as much as the last. No author wants their vision to be viewed as stale or repetitive. I must say, Sarah/Elena/Maia stories would NEVER be construed as dull or boring.

These three gals have once again shown us their imagination has no bounds when it comes to delivering a solid storyline and inventiveness between multiple partners. They managed to convey pain (physical and psychological), weaved in a bit of Fae history, and also introduced new characters when one of their own was taken, harmed, and used as a pawn in war.

As much I loved Braxas/Gabe/Corrine’s story, I think I’m going to heart Alak/Aeron/Katrina’s tale even more. She’s fierce, ballsy, a true warrior — golden skinned beauty. Alak is a smart-ass, cocky male while Aeron is the calmer, more charming sibling. Both are sexy as hell with long, black braided hair. Oh and they have tattoos. <Swooning>

Ladies, get to writing because their story is sure to be a magical hit!

When Sorchia DuBois contacted me and asked me to review her story, I was more than willing to offer up my services. I love books about witches, old castles, and Scotland so all three rolled up into one…. It was a no-brainer. I just had to read “Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones” and you should too.

There wasn’t a chapter, a solitary page, where Zoraida didn’t encounter or reflect upon something magical. As we learn through flashbacks, there’s magic in all things and there’s those who weld the power of black magic. As in life, there’s always those who’ll do anything to quench their thirst for power and Michael Logan proved he was such person.

From the get go that man rubbed me the wrong way, Zoraida, too. He used his magic to tap into people’s thoughts and used seduction spells against them. That’s so very wrong. He’s so despicable. Sorchia, marvelous job on developing a character the readers will surely loathe and look forward to his ultimate downfall. Unfortunately, besides a busted nose, he’s walked away to fight another day.

As for the reason Zoraida came to Scotland — the Healing Stone. It wasn’t as simple as walking into the castle and walking back out with in her suitcase. Luckily for her, she made a sort of alliance with a mysterious and alluring sorcerer, Shea. Everything about him drew me in. His tales of the past, his broodiness, and his powerful aura. I can’t wait to see what Sorchia has planned for him in book 2.

For the ending, well, imagine the end of first Lord of the Rings movie. You know, the scene  with Frodo and Sam were looking out over the land that lain between them and Mount Doom. Well, “Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones” ending gave me the same impression the LOTR ending did. The scene just stopped and you just know when part 2 picks up, something major is on the horizon, and you can’t wait to see it unfold.

Dance of Desolation by Jenna Whittaker (Book Showcase)

51F4ssB8BVL

Shren has been locked in his own mansion’s cellar for seven years before one day, he finds the door unlocked, and his house—once filled with parties that his captors, his traitorous servants, threw—silent and empty.

Upon closer inspection, Shren finds that his home has only one difference from the days before his imprisonment—a painting gracing one of the walls, a painting of a man with eyes bleeding pitch black. A magicworker has been in his home.

Shren leaves, seeking to escape the wrath of the magicworker, should they return. It is then that he discovers their origin, that they are far more insidious and dangerous than he’d ever imagined, and he is inexorably drawn into a journey to stop the magicworkers from taking and corrupting his people as they did in the land they were created.

The walls showed a thousand writings and pictures as they slithered across the dark wood, telling the same story–a tale of darkness in a world long passed, wars and battles, everything Shren had ever read about in the history books. He watched with fascination, as he did every day; watching the stories be told in the silence of ink upon a wall.

Then the picture changed. It came to life. Black wings unfurled, arching feathers brushing the roof above, throwing shadows across the small square room as the lantern in the centre of the roof rocked and swayed in the breeze. The wings thrust out from the walls, grey and black etchings now hovering in mid-air. The wings beat slowly.

Shren covered his nose as the damp air stirred, chill gusts flinging fragments of mould into his face. He shivered and groaned; the musty scent of rotting wood and aged wine was irritating.

The wings slowly curled in on themselves, folding, before fading completely. A golden-cream furred shape crouched upright where they had been in the dark corner of the cellar.

“We need to leave.” The cat-like creature fell onto four legs and padded over to where Shren crouched, leaning against a barrel. It nosed the man’s huddled figure, keen eyes flickering as it waited for a response.

Shren unwrapped his arms from his legs and heaved himself upright, staring down at the linsang. He did not deign to respond, simply turning his back to it, staring at the dank walls of his prison. Every day the linsang spoke to him and every day it said the same thing. He did not want to leave.

Water dripped from the ceiling. Icy droplets slid down his neck and Shren lifted the hood of his cloak with a sigh.

Still the linsang stood, tail twitching as it watched its master.

“How am I to leave?” He demanded as he finally whirled round to face his familiar, “When I’m in a locked prison?”

“You know as well as I do,” the linsang arched its back in a stretch as it spoke, words seeming to materialise as sounds in the air though its mouth never opened. “You can leave whenever you wish.”

“Why now?” Shren leant his head back against the cold bricks and stared up at the ceiling.

“Time for reality, my friend,” the linsang said simply.

Shren growled and slid back into a crouch on the floor. His mouth twisted bitterly. “Reality,” he hissed, “Can go to hell.”

In answer, the linsang turned to the walls surrounding them, and Shren wearily followed the familiar’s gaze. The once white stone, now moulded green and grey, still held strong, held back the onslaught of the elements far above. And as had ever been for seven years, still the stories scrolled, black etchings of ink fluidly shifting over the walls day and night. Shren had tried to scrub them off, make them stop as the stories they told he did not wish to hear. Did not wish to believe, he admitted silently.

The place had driven him mad. Perhaps it was indeed time to leave.

A flicker at the edge of his vision made Shren to pause. He glanced over at the wall beside him, and the pictures it told caused him to sink to the floor once more.

No. Shren tried to look away but every wall was covered in the lies. Men laughing and drinking, showing his fine arts; the paintings of colour he had collected himself. Telling stories they had overheard him say, as if they were their own.

“Stop it.”

The words were whispered, but Shren clenched his fists, nails digging into palms crusted with the dried mud of years. Fear shone from his eyes as he sought to not watch the visions. Truth, the linsang had told him. The walls always showed truth.

But it was lies. “Stop it!” Shren shrieked, eyes wide. Perhaps indeed he had gone mad.

With those words the walls stopped. “I am sorry,” the linsang rubbed against his legs, “But you know as well as I do…Now is the time.”

He looked once more at the scrawling, the pictures that had been there his every waking moment. They had changed once more; this time it showed the guards of his prison, his own servants, their faces warped. Eyes scratched out, bleeding blackness. Skin grey; dead.

Shren recognised this picture. Never had he seen it before on these walls, but a time many years ago. An ancient painting he had seen once and sought for many years after; different subjects, yet the eyes were the same. Staring black holes. He’d never been able to see the strange mural again, yet here it was, on the very walls of his cellar, and that was truth.

His heart pounded in his ears; he knew what this meant. The linsang was right. He needed to get out now. Without any further argument, Shren drew himself up and laid his hand on the door latch.

He was sure it was locked. It had been locked for years, was that not why he was imprisoned here, why he had never left? Yet when Shren pushed down on the door handle, it swung open, moisture-swollen wood scraping against the stone doorway was the only resistance he met.

Had it ever been this way? Shren shook himself; of course not. The servants had to open and close this door to deliver the food that appeared every morning before he awoke. Perhaps one time they had forgotten to lock it. This one time.

He peered nervously out the door. Nothing happened. No traps sprung, no servants leaping from darkened alcoves.

No alarms.

So Shren ventured out into his mansion once more, a place he had not seen for close to seven years. He ignored his surroundings until he had exited the stairwell from the basement and was at ground level, concentrating only on one step at time.

Then he was inside the house. Here the plain stone walls, moulded and damp below, changed to plastered and painted surfaces, smoothed and clean beneath his fingertips.

So little had changed. His servants, traitors one and all, and yet they had still faithfully taken care of his home in his absence. They had spent his hoarded riches on the baser things, enjoying life as one big party, only to fall prey to one man–a magicworker of kroma iridis. That was the tale the inked walls had told him. Never had the pictures changed from days of banquets and debauchery until that moment, when he had seen the man with the bloodstained, black eyes.

Secret of the Gargoyles: Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles, Book 3 by Rebecca Chastain (Book Review)

I place the lives of all gargoyles into your hands with what I am about to tell you…

In her brief career as a gargoyle healer, Mika Stillwater has faced some daunting challenges, but none have stumped her—until now. A strange sickness infects a handful of gargoyles in Terra Haven, rendering them comatose and paralyzed. Worse, the cure she seeks is shrouded in the gargoyles’ mysterious culture and the secret they guard with their lives.

Gaining the gargoyles’ trust is only the first step. To save the sick gargoyles, Mika must embark on a perilous mission into the heart of deadly wild magic to a place no human has ever survived…

The captivating conclusion to the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles trilogy, Secret of the Gargoyles will charm readers of all ages, especially those who love extraordinary magic and endearing gargoyles.

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

Secret of the Gargoyles picks up where Curse of the Gargoyles left off at. Elsa Lansing is in prison but the gargoyles used for her own gains are still comatose. Mika embarks on a journey to save the seven gargoyles who can’t escape the dormancy sickness. With the help of Oliver, Celeste (another gargoyle) and Marcus, they go where no one dares to venture — Reaper’s Ridge.

There, they battle magical storms, gargoyles, and the power of the baetyle (sacred place of the gargoyles) to restore things as they were before.

Was the mission a 100% success? Sadly no but in a great story we don’t expect everything to go exactly as planned. What would the fun be in that? We like action, suspense, and —  Holy sh!t,  did you see that?! — moments.  Rebecca most certainly delivers all those in the latest installment in the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles.

In Secret of the Gargoyles, will readers finally see a relationship take form between Marcus and Mika? Abso-freaking-lutely and about damn time too!!!

However, now I have to wonder a few things. We met Naomi, the train conductor, at the start of their journey. Her and Marcus seemed to have a connection. They flirted a bit which made Mika jealous. Will we see Naomi again and, if so, will she impact their new budding romance?

Guess only time will tell and I, for one, will be eagerly awaiting where Rebecca’s creative mind takes us next.
