‘Hello? Is anyone here?’

A low voice rumbled down the hallway, and her chest tightened. It was a man, but she didn’t recognise the voice. For a moment, she considered remaining quiet, but she licked her lips and made herself step forward. She was overreacting. If she wasn’t, there was an emergency call button hidden under the lip of her desktop. Security could be here in less than a minute if she needed them.

She returned to the lobby and scanned the area. Her gaze came to a screeching halt when it landed on the man who was already looking in her direction.

Oh. Wow.

Her wariness didn’t decrease, but a different kind of awareness flooded her. ‘Hello?’ she said huskily.

Somehow he’d known she was there, yet he seemed taken aback. His weight slowly rocked back from the balls of his feet, and his eyes narrowed. They were blue eyes. Startling blue. ‘Good evening.’

She wasn’t overreacting. The guy had danger written all over him, in that good-girls-beware sort of way. Tall and strapping, he had closely cropped dark hair and a rough-and-tumble aura that didn’t go with the tuxedo he was wearing. That wasn’t to say he didn’t look good. He looked damn good. The combination was powerful, and it hit her first in her belly and next in her knees.

Sex appeal oozed from him.

Which, of course, meant he was here for an escort.

His gaze was running over her just as alertly as she’d evaluated him, so Rielle quickly put herself behind her desk. She tucked her barrette behind her phone and fought the urge to run her fingers through her hair. ‘I’m sorry, but we’re closed.’

He cocked his head. ‘The door was open.’

And that had been a mistake.

‘Did you have an appointment?’ She knew very well he didn’t.

‘No.’ Her question had been sharp, but his blue gaze didn’t flinch. Instead, the lines of his face softened, and she had to lock her knees to keep them from melting. ‘But I’m in a bind. I was hoping you could help me out.’

She lifted an eyebrow. The man might be putting out pheromones by the bucketful, but her brain was still functioning – admittedly better on some levels than others – and she’d begun to sense danger of another sort. The entrapment sort. Luxxor was not a company that took walk-ins. ‘For whom are you looking?’

He walked closer to the desk, and she instinctively gripped its edge. The way he moved, all silent and stealthy. The expensive carpeting absorbed the noise most people made, but the air didn’t even stir at his approach. Her fingers edged closer to the silent alarm, but she didn’t push it.

Not yet.

‘I’m looking for Luxxor Limited. I know I’m late, but I need an escort for the evening.’

Her guard stayed up. She knew they were alone in the office – she was acutely aware of the fact – but her company’s clients knew better than to go spouting off so casually about Luxxor’s line of work. They signed nondisclosure agreements to ensure it. If he was wearing a wire, she wanted to make everything perfectly clear. ‘You need someone to attend an event with you tonight?’

‘Actually, I need someone right now.’

She shook her head. Luxxor went to extremes to satisfy its clients. She’d blush if she thought about how far some escorts went, but there was no way she could accommodate his request. The employees they had working tonight already had their assignments. Even if she did contact someone, the timing was impossible.

And for some reason, that relieved her. ‘I’m sorry, but we don’t have anyone available on such short notice, Mr . . . I don’t believe I caught your name.’

‘Because I didn’t give it.’ He slid his hands into his pockets. The tuxedo looked good on him, but it was failing badly at taming him. Especially when he winked. ‘Tell me yours, and I’ll tell you mine.’

First, I want to state that I hadn’t read the rest of the series when I was asked to review book three, Courting Danger. The only time this became an issue was when the name “Eddie” was dropped out of nowhere. I wondered if he was a key person in the other books. However, Kimberly clued us in on who Eddie was and the past he shared with Rielle so have no fear you’ll be lost or confused for more than a few pages, at most.

With that said…..

If I was basing my review on this being classified as a mystery, I’d say it fell flat.

If I was critiquing this as a romance/suspense book, then I would say it had that in spades.

My only snafu comment about the romance aspects of this tale is this….. Mel aka Darien came to the office seeking an escort to a White House event. Rielle, not an escort, agrees to go with him (with much reluctance) even though she’s not an escort and she doesn’t believe his name is Mel or that he’s really an accountant. At the event, the jig is up. However, she still decides to have unprotected sex with him multiple times. Heck, through the entire book, they never once spoke about protection, partners, STD’s, possible pregnancies. NADA!! I guess a hot bod and great sex makes you forget all those details. As a reader, not so much.

I will say, despite those factors, the sex scenes were sizzlin.

When it came time to decide on a score, I thought about the lack of mystery and the bedroom blunders. I almost gave this story a 3 but I simply couldn’t because Kimberly had Rielle kicking butt ….. literally!!

You just have to love a woman who can handle herself!!

The True Picture by Alison Habens (Book Review)

‘The True Picture’ is the story of Veronica (Vera – True, Icon – Picture). It starts, around 33 AD, in the city of Tyre where ex-temple dancer and high-class purple dye trader Veronica comes face to face with Jesus one night at the necropolis as he tours Phoenicia with a crowd of followers.

Gradually she gives up all her treasures to follow him, too. She loses her towering hair-do and bronze bust of Venus, and leaves a trail of jewellery through Galilee and by the River Jordan, singing and drinking her way to the station on the Via Dolorosa where she wipes her master’s face with a cloth as he carries the cross. Famously, that image never fades: but the story of St. Veronica is refreshed in this funky new telling.

Man, oh man, I really wasn’t looking forward to writing this review. But, I gave Alison my word I’d be honest with my feelings regarding it.

So with that said…… I’m sorry to say I didn’t enjoy this book. My opinion is NOT based on the fact it taps into religion.

No, I felt Alison went overboard with describing everything in minute detail. I understand trying to set the scene for a reader but there comes a point where an author needs to learn “less is more”.

With so much detail and information thrown at us, it reminded me of a textbook or an encyclopedia. Not highly entertaining but filled with vast amount of knowledge.

Author Showcase / Interview and Review of “Their Lady Gloriana” – Starla Kaye

Welcome, Starla Kaye!!

1. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(Starla) I love life, observing relationships, and dreaming up romantic stories. I’m a Happily-Ever-After kind of person, so that’s how my stories end up. Actually, I didn’t grow up reading romances and read my first one around the time I decided to try my hand at writing books. The genre was, and is, perfect for me. So I’ve been penning romances for around twenty years, publishing my first one in 1999.

2.  Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(Starla) I don’t often get “writer’s block,” and I feel fortunate for that. I write several books at the same time, for different publishers. When I get momentarily uncertain how I (or my characters) want to go next, I shift to another story. As the epiphany comes for my problem, I shift back to that story.

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(Starla) It’s not all glitz and glam? That’s why I got into being a writer. Okay, just kidding. I write not for the glory, but because I enjoy my work. When I’m not writing, I love to travel, which I do nearly every month for a couple of weeks. My laptop travels with, of course, because my characters have trouble giving me a free moment. I also make small art quilts that I design from pictures of places I’ve been. And I teach writing classes to senior adults. I really enjoy my students and we share so much. I’m constantly learning from them.

4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Starla) Since I’ve been publishing for sixteen years, the secret is out. At first I was worried about it affecting my husband’s work as a CPA, firm owner. But I’ve always been honest when someone asks me what I write. I write romance, period. They can accept that or not, which is their problem and not mine. Fortunately I’ve run into very few people who look uncomfortable with what I write. And my husband delights in telling his clients or anyone else that he is my muse. Whatever. If it makes him happy to say that or that he’s the model for my heroes…Well, we all laugh about it.

5. Will you share with us your all time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(Starla) There are so many wonderful authors, but I do have some favorites that I buy every book they write. My list includes Robyn Carr, Janet Chapman, Molly Harper, Sandra Hill, Katie MacAlister, Susan Mallery, Lynsay Sands, Gena Showalter, RaeAnne Thayne, and Susan Wiggs.

6. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(Starla) If I wanted one of my books to go to the big screen, I’d have to say FOR RUBY’S LOVE. I would have to expand the story more, maybe start with its prequel THE CEO AND THE COWBOY. I can easily picture Barry Van Dyke (in his slightly younger days) as my CEO, Daniel. For my cowboy, Calhoun Cordell, I’d pick Alex O’Loughlin (from Hawaii Five-o). And I would like Amy Adams for Kendra.

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear, it’ll go no further.

(Starla) I’m working on two projects, very different ones. FOR THE LOVE OF ROWAN is a medieval romance and the sequel to THEIR LADY GLORIANA. I’ve wanted to write a special story for the second hero, Rowan, ever since I published TLG and have finally gotten to it. I’m also working on another story for Decadent Publishing’s 1-Night Stand series. SO NOT A WHITE KNIGHT isn’t a sequel to COWBOY DREAMIN’, but it has the characters from that story making a reappearance.

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(Starla) I’ve published 20 novels, 38 novellas, 18 short stories, and 8 anthologies. There really isn’t a particular reading order, except for my two other medieval romances. MAGGIE MINE was the first one, and THE GREAT SCOTTISH DEVIL is the sequel. My complete book list is on my website starlakaye.com. All of my Starla Kaye books are on my Amazon Author Page. I also have books at Amazon under my other pen names: S.K. Fero and Skylar Faye.

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(Starla) My contact information includes: Email to starla@starlakaye.com; Twitter @starla_kaye; and Facebook StarlaKayeWriter

10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(Starla) I’d just like to thank you for letting be here and thank my readers, current ones and new ones. As I said earlier, I write because I love to. And because I’m practically haunted by so many characters impatiently waiting for their stories be told. Happy reading!

Thank you again, Starla, for taking time out of your busy schedule to share more about yourself to all your fans – present and future ones. 🙂

Speaking of fans, ladies and gents don’t run off quite yet. It’s time I share my opinion of Their Lady Gloriana. Please continue reading and don’t forget to drop us a line – questions or comments are always appreciated. Heck, we are happy to receive a simple HOWDY.

In medieval times honorable men had to do what was required of them by the kings to whom they were loyal…

Thomas Lancaster, a widower with bad memories of marriage and a young son he barely knew was a hardened knight loyal to his king. In reward for his efforts fighting in the Crusades, King Edward gave him Middlemound Castle to hold for the crown. But the king decreed that he must marry the beautiful young widow of the castle’s previous lord.

Lady Gloriana Stewart had suffered brutally in her first marriage and had no desire to marry again. Yet she had no choice. She had to protect her people and obey her king.

All she wanted was for her new husband to give her a baby.
Having already lost one wife in childbirth, Thomas refused to even consider it.

Sir Rowan Montgomery, Thomas’s first knight, friend, and lover complicated the situation even more. Thomas didn’t want to give up Rowan and Gloriana didn’t want to admit she had feelings for her husband and for Rowan.

Man, the people in medieval times were a naughty, randy bunch. Starla wrote many scenes involving intercourse between two males, man/woman, and a couple threesomes. There were acts of voyeurism which I know will be a crowd pleaser. And for those who enjoy anal play, oh yeah this historic tale had plenty of that too. *winks*

My only negative comments, small ones, were these….. when Thomas started coughing, I thought more would’ve became of it. However, he got over the sickness without any drama. When, Rowan was injured, I expected “more” to develop there as well.

Heck, I was looking forward to some epic battle.

 Oh well.

If you start this book with the knowledge you won’t have any major “Holy Fuck” moments and simply a whole lot of fuckery going on, then you will love this book.

As most of my readers/followers love a good romp in the hay, I think you’ll be pleased by this historical tale.

Give it a shot, my lovely ones.

Spiders the size of birds, mosquitos the size of hummingbirds, poisonous snakes, and freaking headhunters…. HELL -TO- THE – NO!

It would have to be a really good cause, like the one Leah is faced with, before I dare to travel to the Amazon.

Seriously, J.K. described it so vividly that you can actually see the words/images pop off the pages.

So real, in fact, I dreamt about it and woke up in a cold sweat. Damn you, Arachnophobia (fear of spiders).

So even though a real life trek through the Amazon is out of the question for me, I’d follow J.K. there anytime (just maybe not before bedtime). *winks*

Folks, you should make the journey with J.K. as well. Literally, some sort of action was occurring in each chapter.

This was an highly-charged adventure novel which had me entertained from beginning to the end.

1) Welcome, J.K Winn. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(J.K.Winn) Even as a child I always thought someday I would someday be a writer, like my mother who dabbled in poetry, but writing wasn’t my original career choice. Lucky for me, the career I choose entailed listening to the stories of others, so that once I decided it was time for a career change, and realized writing was the only thing that spoke to me, I had a ton of stories in my head to mine for my novels. While I respected my clients privacy and would never use their stories directly, I was able to take bits and pieces and pull them together in unique and creative ways.

At present I have published three novels of romance and suspense, one play produced by the Actor’s Alliance Festival in San Diego and poetry anthologized in, For the Love of Writing, by the San Diego Writer’s Workshop. My play, Gotcha!, was selected for a reading at the Village Arts Theater in Carlsbad, California, May 2012.

I presently live by the beach in San Diego County, California. Please visit me at my blog, www.jkwinn.com

2) Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(J.K.Winn) I don’t really believe in Writer’s Block although there have been times when I have been unable to write. As a matter of fact, I just spent two years coping with family and financial problems and was too overwhelmed to put pen to paper. Since I thought it was futile to force myself to do something I was incapable of doing, I allowed myself the space to deal with all that was going on in my life before I made a commitment to begin a new project. Two months ago, I sat down and forced myself to begin with a single sentence. Although, at first, my writing was awkward and tentative, I continued on until it became more fluid. I am now almost halfway through my new novel. During all the time I was unable to write, I never labeled my condition or made it a problem. I believe that would have mired me in a place I didn’t need or want to be.

3)  Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(J.K.Winn) When I’m not writing, I’m usually on the move. I have a full and wonderful life, with many friends and family. I love to dance, to hike, to workout, to read, to eat and…well, to eat some more. There’s rarely a dull moment.

4)  I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(J.K.Winn) Everyone knows I write, and they’re all supportive of it. My son is my plot partner and I couldn’t write a book without his help. And my friends are my best audience. Unfortunately, most of them ladmire my work and rarely critique it, but it’s good to have a built in fan club.

5) Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(J.K.Winn) Oh, my. I have so many favorite authors. Let’s see, I love Toni Morrison, Barbara Kingsolver, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Pat Conroy, Joyce Carol Oates, Gillian Flynn, Kurt Vonnegut, Dennis Lehane, Mikhail Bulgakov and on and on and on.

(KAM) I’m sorry to admit I haven’t read anything from any of those authors. Maybe I need to rectify that snafu.

6) If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(J.K.Winn) I’d love to see my romantic action adventure, River of Desire, on the big screen. I think it’s an exciting and lush novel, a cross between Romancing the Stone and The Boys from Brazil, and would shine with Kira Knightly as Leah, Oliver Martinez as Dylan and Ian McKellan as Leah’s grandfather.

7) Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(J.K.Winn) I’m working right now on a sequel to Out of the Shadow about a woman who witnesses a murder while in a blackout and is trying desperately to remember what happened and who did it, before she becomes the next victim. Stay tuned for its publication by the end of 2015 or the beginning of 2016.

8)  Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

Grey by E L James (Book Review)

Christian Grey exercises control in all things; his world is neat, disciplined, and utterly empty—until the day that Anastasia Steele falls into his office, in a tangle of shapely limbs and tumbling brown hair. He tries to forget her, but instead is swept up in a storm of emotion he cannot comprehend and cannot resist. Unlike any woman he has known before, shy, unworldly Ana seems to see right through him—past the business prodigy and the penthouse lifestyle to Christian’s cold, wounded heart.

Will being with Ana dispel the horrors of his childhood that haunt Christian every night? Or will his dark sexual desires, his compulsion to control, and the self-loathing that fills his soul drive this girl away and destroy the fragile hope she offers him?

This book is intended for mature audiences.

Seeing the events unfold through Christian’s eyes was enlightening. E L James showed us his softer side, his vulnerability. He seemed almost child-like at times; needing validation of his worth. In “Grey”, I found Christian more likable.

There were several passages revisited (which I knew was to be expected): the contact, bar and a few emails. I actually skipped over several pages because I knew what was going to be said/happen and saw them as pointless to peruse again.

I must say one thing, as I’ve said in the past regarding the movie to my friends/followers, this book backs up my claim THERE ARE discrepancies between the book and movie. That’s why I usually DON’T read a book and watch the cinematic version or vice versa. I will nitpick, as would any true fan.
