Author Showcase/Interview and Review of “River of Desire” – J.K. Winn

Imagine traveling deep into the Amazon Jungle, where every step is a struggle through thick undergrowth, any rock or tree may mask a venomous creature and somewhere, at some time, you will run up against a mysterious Ebola-like Hemorrhagic Fever.

River of Desire tells the tale of Leah Roberts, a reporter on assignment in Peru, who hires professional guide, Dylan Hart, to escort her into the Amazon jungle on the trail of a deadly disease. On the river, Leah and Dylan encounter treacherous rapids and carnivorous creatures, but what they fear most is the attraction growing between them. Their travels finally lead them to a reclusive doctor who holds the answer to the sudden appearance of the lethal viral strain.

Don’t expect the ordinary when you begin a trip down the River of Desire. So hop on board the boat and take a thrilling, sometimes life threatening, but always action-packed ride down the mighty Amazon with Leah and Dylan, who face daunting adventures, but know that love is the most amazing adventure of all.

Spiders the size of birds, mosquitos the size of hummingbirds, poisonous snakes, and freaking headhunters…. HELL -TO- THE – NO!

It would have to be a really good cause, like the one Leah is faced with, before I dare to travel to the Amazon.

Seriously, J.K. described it so vividly that you can actually see the words/images pop off the pages.

So real, in fact, I dreamt about it and woke up in a cold sweat. Damn you, Arachnophobia (fear of spiders).

So even though a real life trek through the Amazon is out of the question for me, I’d follow J.K. there anytime (just maybe not before bedtime). *winks*

Folks, you should make the journey with J.K. as well. Literally, some sort of action was occurring in each chapter.

This was an highly-charged adventure novel which had me entertained from beginning to the end.

1) Welcome, J.K Winn. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(J.K.Winn) Even as a child I always thought someday I would someday be a writer, like my mother who dabbled in poetry, but writing wasn’t my original career choice. Lucky for me, the career I choose entailed listening to the stories of others, so that once I decided it was time for a career change, and realized writing was the only thing that spoke to me, I had a ton of stories in my head to mine for my novels. While I respected my clients privacy and would never use their stories directly, I was able to take bits and pieces and pull them together in unique and creative ways.

At present I have published three novels of romance and suspense, one play produced by the Actor’s Alliance Festival in San Diego and poetry anthologized in, For the Love of Writing, by the San Diego Writer’s Workshop. My play, Gotcha!, was selected for a reading at the Village Arts Theater in Carlsbad, California, May 2012.

I presently live by the beach in San Diego County, California. Please visit me at my blog, www.jkwinn.com

2) Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(J.K.Winn) I don’t really believe in Writer’s Block although there have been times when I have been unable to write. As a matter of fact, I just spent two years coping with family and financial problems and was too overwhelmed to put pen to paper. Since I thought it was futile to force myself to do something I was incapable of doing, I allowed myself the space to deal with all that was going on in my life before I made a commitment to begin a new project. Two months ago, I sat down and forced myself to begin with a single sentence. Although, at first, my writing was awkward and tentative, I continued on until it became more fluid. I am now almost halfway through my new novel. During all the time I was unable to write, I never labeled my condition or made it a problem. I believe that would have mired me in a place I didn’t need or want to be.

3)  Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(J.K.Winn) When I’m not writing, I’m usually on the move. I have a full and wonderful life, with many friends and family. I love to dance, to hike, to workout, to read, to eat and…well, to eat some more. There’s rarely a dull moment.

4)  I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(J.K.Winn) Everyone knows I write, and they’re all supportive of it. My son is my plot partner and I couldn’t write a book without his help. And my friends are my best audience. Unfortunately, most of them ladmire my work and rarely critique it, but it’s good to have a built in fan club.

5) Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(J.K.Winn) Oh, my. I have so many favorite authors. Let’s see, I love Toni Morrison, Barbara Kingsolver, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Pat Conroy, Joyce Carol Oates, Gillian Flynn, Kurt Vonnegut, Dennis Lehane, Mikhail Bulgakov and on and on and on.

(KAM) I’m sorry to admit I haven’t read anything from any of those authors. Maybe I need to rectify that snafu.

6) If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(J.K.Winn) I’d love to see my romantic action adventure, River of Desire, on the big screen. I think it’s an exciting and lush novel, a cross between Romancing the Stone and The Boys from Brazil, and would shine with Kira Knightly as Leah, Oliver Martinez as Dylan and Ian McKellan as Leah’s grandfather.

7) Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(J.K.Winn) I’m working right now on a sequel to Out of the Shadow about a woman who witnesses a murder while in a blackout and is trying desperately to remember what happened and who did it, before she becomes the next victim. Stay tuned for its publication by the end of 2015 or the beginning of 2016.

8)  Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(J.K.Winn) My books are all published on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and the Apple store. Here are the links:

Out of the Shadow: Amazon – Barnes and Noble – iTunes

The Spirit Keepers: Amazon – Barnes and Noble –  iTunes

9) Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(J.K.Winn) If anyone would like to get in touch with me, you can find me on my blog at  www.jkwinn.com on Facebook at www.facebook.com/authorjswinn.com or at Twitter at www.twitter.com/authorjswinn.com

The Hotter You Burn by Gena Showalter (Book Review)

Beck O’ckley is ruthless in the boardroom…and the bedroom. He’s never been with the same woman twice, and vows he never will. With a past as twisted as his, meaningless sex keeps the demons at bay. His motto: One and done. No harm, no foul.

Harlow Glass is the most hated girl in town. The beautiful artist is penniless, jobless and homeless. When she sneaks into Beck’s home—her ancestral estate—for food, she’s shocked by his early return…and her immediate, sizzling and intense attraction to him.

For the first time in Beck’s life, he can’t get a woman out of his mind. All too soon, friendship blooms into obsession and he’ll have to break her heart…or surrender his own.

Gena, once again, delivered a sexy story with a splash of humor throughout the tale to keep things fun and flirty.

Some of my favorite comedic moments:

“You’d think you told him your hoo-ha is actually a Venus flytrap and his penis will be severed if he has sex with you.”

“Baconator” – Harlow’s name for Beck’s cock.

How they made cleaning toilets sound so dirty. Epicness!!

Folks, grab this book. Trust me, you’re gonna love it!

The Eternity Road by Lana Melyan (Book Review)

YA Paranormal

When her best friend’s brother tells her that two strange men are following her, Amanda thinks that Craig is just being overprotective. Amanda has nursed a secret crush on Craig for years, but he’s never seemed to notice or care about her before.

But Craig’s warning coincides with a strange dream, and Amanda starts to get the sense that nothing in her life is what it seems to be—and that perhaps nothing in her life will ever be the same again.

Then Hanna and Craig start acting really strange. They forbid Amanda from going anywhere without them and insist that she’s in danger.

What Amanda doesn’t know is that Craig and Hanna are Hunters. And their job is to protect Amanda from the vampires chasing her so that she can fulfill her mission. The only catch is that Amanda has no clue she even has a mission to fulfill…

This book might be geared towards the YA crowd but I found enjoyment in it as well and I’m well above the teeny-bopper age bracket.

Now, it’s not a real shocker who Amanda really is or shall I say was. Lana obviously wasn’t attempting to keep us guessing. This book was about Amanda’s journey to the knowledge hidden deep within and reclaiming her life.

Along the way, the group of hunters lost key family members.

Power is tempting and when one of your own craves the dark side….. watch out. I won’t name names of who were the casualties of the battle but I will say more than one of the good guys died for their cause — to protect the human race against evil.

Ladies and gents, young and old, I can say (without a single hesitation) you will adore this book if you fancy vampires, witches, and immortal hunters.

And after you read this tale and see the words “to be continued”, you’ll be saying the same three little words I am about to type……..
I WANT MORE!!!

When she came home from work one day and, tired, crashed on the couch in front of the TV, she found her daughters (13 and 17 years old then) watching some TV show with horrible monsters. She couldn’t convince them to switch the channel, so she watched it with them. Later she would love that show as much as they did. That TV show was “Buffy The Vampire Slayer.” She was always interested in supernatural stories, but this was something new, something different, that made her want to create her own story in that genre.

Taking the Heat by Victoria Dahl (Book Review)

Girls’ Night Out – Book 3

All revved up for bright lights and steamy nights, writer Veronica Chandler chased her dreams to New York City. When she hit a dead end, reality sent her back home to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Saving her pride and her new gig—writing a relationship advice column!—requires some faking. No one can know the truth about her big-city flop or her nonexistent sex life. But the town’s irresistibly rugged librarian is determined to figure her out…and give her hands-on lessons in every wicked thing she wants to know.

Gabe MacKenzie’s heart might be in Wyoming, but secretly his future’s tied up in his family’s Manhattan legacy. Getting down and dirty with Veronica is supposed to give him a few memorable nights—not complicate his plans. But the thing about heat this scorching is there’s just no going back…and it might be too hot for either of them to take.

It’s true Veronica and Gabe helped each other overcome obstacles hindering their happiness and, in return, they found their own HEA with each other. However what I will remember most about the story is the Dear Veronica letter from the bullied and depressed/suicidal HS student. The utter despair from the student broke my heart.

I have a son who is in HS and I worry all the time if he’s getting bullied. He told me a few kids did bother him some: closed his locker door on him and attempted to trip him. He stood up for himself and luckily they backed off. Sadly, this is not the case for most kids. Last year, at his school, a kid took his own life due to being bullied and ridiculed for his handicap.

When I hear about instances like this, I feel disgusted, angry, and sad. It’s naive to think it doesn’t happen. Kids should be able to feel safe.

Thankfully, Veronica took steps to ensure a program was setup to help students who were in need of services for depression, being bullied, anything and everything that might pop up in their lives.

She is a giving soul.

Yes, this world needs more giving souls. It’ll make for a better world. Period!
