Author Showcase and Review of “From a Soldier’s Perspective” – Michael Lee Womack

On the seventeenth day of February 1987, author and poet Michael Lee Womack was born in the small town of Sanford, North Carolina. While coming up through elementary school, middle school, and high school Mr. Womack was extremely shy. Michael Lee Womack was extremely shy, but he had a love for the ladies. His love for the ladies would eventually give birth to his love for poetry. Whenever he was in middle school and high school he was specifically known for writing poems for every beautiful woman that he was too shy to speak to. 

 
In the summer of 2005, North Carolina Author& Poet “Michael Lee Womack” graduated from”Lee Senior High School”. Approximately one month later from reaching this landmark in his life, this young man became a part of something bigger than anything that he had ever been a part of at this time of his life, the “United States Army”. He enlisted into the United States Army on the 30th of June 2005. From there, he would embark on a journey unlike any other. He attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky so that he could serve his country as a 19 Delta Cavalry Scout. 
 
Upon the completion of his training at Fort Knox, Kentucky the United States Army assigned him to the 3rd Squadron, 4th U.S. Cavalry Regiment of the 25th Infantry Division. In the years of 2006- 2007 he would deploy as a “Calvary Scout” with 3rd Squadron 4th U.S. Calvary Regiment located out of the Pacific Island of “Hawaii,”. 
 
In the year of 2008 this hard working soldier was ready to move on to another duty station. His next landing spot in the army would once again be Fort Knox, Kentucky. While there he would spend the next year of his life in the 1st Squadron, 16th U.S. Cavalry working as the OPFOR that assisted in the training of freshly new army lieutenants. After spending the first three years of his army career serving honorably as a “Calvary Scout” this trooper sought to learn another skill. 
 
The great southern state of “Georgia” would soon be his next home as he continued his journey onto the home of the “United States Army Signal Corps” , also known as “Fort Gordon”. It would be there in which he would learn the skills required to be a “25 Sierra” “Satellite Communication Systems Operator/Maintainer”. 
 
After obtaining the knowledge required to carry out the duties of his new occupation he would continue to “soldier on” to “Fort Stewart, Georgia” home of the 3rd Infantry Division. As soon as he made way to his new Army family, “Charlie Company 4-3 BSTB” he deployed with them to Ramadi, Iraq in support of “Operation New Dawn” from the summer of 2010 to the summer of 2011. 
 
Three years after that he would see his army career come to a close, and on the 27th of May 2014 he was medically retired from the military. Upon his departure from the military Mr. Womack would have problems adjusting to civilian life, however, his first love, a.k.a. “poetry” saved him. Through your reading of his newest published book, “From A Soldier’s Perspective” he hopes that you gain much insight from it on what life was like for him as a soldier, as well as what life has been like for him as a veteran.
 
 
 
 
 
As soldiers who have just returned from war, we fight a separate war daily in an attempt to leave the war behind. Many soldiers, just like myself, come home from war only to fight a separate internal battle, with debilitating illnesses such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. It was important for me to share my story not only for myself but for those who have fought, for those who have fallen, and for those who continue to wage war in order for the United States of America to continue to remain free. The price of freedom is not free. 

War is chaos, and many soldiers bear the scars from it for the rest of our lives.

Unless you walked a mile in a soldier’s shoes, you can’t fully understand what their time deployed has done to their psyche and bodies. Yes, family and friends live with the aftermath right alongside them. However, loved ones can’t fully understand what’s going on in the soldier’s mind. The battles they still face well after their time of war is over. 
 
I have no doubt Michael’s poetry will have you appreciating a soldier’s job a bit more. 
 
I simply couldn’t pick a favorite poem. For me, they all were touching — so many emotions pouring from his heart/mind into ours. 
 
Thank you, Michael. Thank you for opening up to us, letting us in, and sharing your time over there and civilian life will us. 
 
My only negative point to address (which I brought up to him) was the pricing of the paperback/hardcover. He stated he had no control over it. I highly suggest reading this but, for those who are watching their wallets, I would opt for the kindle version.

Chapter 1
 
By midnight the new moon had long ago set and the distant stars barely illuminated the Santa Barbara channel. Sy propelled her sleek dolphin body along the ocean floor—fast approaching the point of no return. For the final leg, she swam inches above the sand, targeting the appointed meeting spot on the shore.
           
All senses on alert, her supple body vibrated with tension. In addition to the natural concerns about her first shape shift, Sy worried about the enormous personal task she’d set for herself as a human. A job that carried unacceptable consequences if she failed. No. Come kelp or high water, she’d locate Lorelei. Do whatever it took to rescue her missing best friend and pod sister. She wouldn’t fail. Arching to the surface, Sy exchanged air. A shallow dive brought her back near the bottom and fluke pumping, she sped forward. Even knowing Lorelei couldn’t hear her, Sy used her friend’s unique signature of clicks and whistles to send out reassurance. “Wherever you are, girl, hang on.”
       
It was time. Sy knew the minute she completed this first shift, she needed to get out of the ocean immediately or risk drowning. The newly transfigured often had trouble using their limbs and stumbled in the surf. Concentrating on the mental pathways she’d been taught, Sy’s body tingled and then throbbed. The change. A horrible wrenching pain shot through her tail. Another across her dorsal. Heart racing, she fought the urge to surface. Was this normal? The pain was excruciating. Why hadn’t someone warned her?
           
In another instant, the pain vanished. She was on her hands and knees. Frothy sea water swirled around her as she fought to maintain a precarious balance. Trying to raise her head, Sy opened her mouth and gulped for air. Get up. She had to stand. Long fingers wrapped around her elbows. A pair of strong arms lifted her quivering body from the water. Chin on her chest, she watched her legs wobble. Tried to lift her new feet out of the wet, cloying sand of the surf. Sy gasped in a deeper breath and set off a hacking cough. Finally, unfamiliar lungs began to process the sea air. Sy noticed her hands, studied her wiggling fingers. Amazing. Her brain ached with overload. Only the dark sky and sand were familiar. The rest of the world
around her was insanely weird. 
 
Remembering the strong hands on her arms, she stiffened her neck, tipped her head back. Expecting to translate his description and recognize her assigned escort, she stared into the face of a total stranger. Sy froze and gaped. A shadow of the former pain rumbled through her abdomen.
 
What was happening? The throbbing during her shift was unexpected and belied all the pod training. Now they’d betrayed her further by going against strict protocol? Without warning, someone switched her escort?
           
The man steadied her. “Can you walk?”  Hearing his gruff tone, she stumbled back. Squid shit. Would nothing go right tonight? Who was this man? A deep instinct assured her he was from their dolphin shore shifter pod. But nothing about him resembled the description of the male scheduled to meet her on this beach. Now what?
 
Her brain took off on a paranoid tangent. If this man was planning to murder her, or worse, abduct her for a science experiment, she’d fight him. No way would she go quietly. Not without finding Lorelei.
 
“You’re late,” the imposter complained. “We need to hustle.” That did it. She’d reached her limit. Sy opened her mouth to scream. No sound came out. She snapped powerful jaws together and gritted her teeth. Here she was with nothing, not even her promised cell phone. Her real escort would have brought a bag of stuff for her. He’d  gently help her dress, and drive her to Save Blue Water headquarters. Studying
this man’s shadowed face, more inner alarms clanged in her head.
           
“Where’s my assigned escort?” she demanded, her voice a raspy whisper. She tried licking her dry lips.
           
“There was a threat to SBW.” His forehead creased in a deep frown. “Everyone had to evacuate.”
 
Sy’s heart thundered in her chest. Wiggling her elbows free from his grasp, she stepped around the stranger onto dry sand. He got points for calling the shore shifter’s corporation by its nickname, SBW. But then, so did most all of the humans in the United States. The part about a threat, potential danger to SBW rang true. Sy wrapped her arms around her waist and shivered. The hair on the back of her neck rose in warning. More new human instincts kicking in? Too many things about tonight were very wrong.

After reading this dolphin-shifter story, questions popped into my head. Do dolphin-shifters age differently than humans? What’s the life expectancy of a (non-shifting) dolphin? 
 
Since shifters are make-believe, the first answer is in the hands of the writer, CJ. However for the second question, I looked towards the internet.
 
At http://www.whalefacts.org/how-long-do-dolphins-live/ I learned that due to 40 or so species of dolphins, it is rather challenging to pinpoint a life span. However, the chart provided on the site does list several species and their estimations; anywhere from 15-90 years. 
 
With that bit of knowledge in your head, lets move on. 
 
I’ve read oodles of shifter books in my time BUT this is the FIRST one revolving around dolphins. They live such peaceful lives under the water surface but on land…. dang, trouble seems to follow them everywhere and I mean that literally. 
 
Poor Sy couldn’t see to go a day without trouble knocking on her door or, in one instance, walking straight in. 
 
If you want action, you’ll get plenty of it here. 
If you want a little hanky-panky, CJ delivered on that as well. 
If you want a sweet HEA, consider it done! 

 
On a side note, in case you are wondering, shifter dolphins (in human form) behave like the rest of us when they climax. I guess if they were in dolphin form they would make those cute dolphin sounds. You know the one I’m talking about. 😉 Yes, for a brief minute, I half-expected the “squeal”. Thankfully, it didn’t happen because that would’ve totally killed the mood for me and probably had me laughing my keister off.

Like Cedric’s divorce proceedings with Magda, Explorations and Further Explorations were dull – lifeless. I didn’t see/feel any chemistry between the two of them. Their scenes and times together were just blah. Too bad because the book summaries gave me hope I’d lose myself in their coupling. 
 
Sorry Mr. Russell but, for me, these books missed the mark. 
 
Charming covers though.

Interview with Carol Rose

Welcome, Carol Rose!!
 
 
 
For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?
 
(Carol) A longtime romance reader, I started writing as a relief from the rigors of graduate school. I’m now a therapist and I write contemporary romance. I love doing both!
 
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.
 
(Carol) When I run into a block, I’ve learned that I must have previously taken a wrong turn in my writing. If I go back and sort out the previous few scenes, I usually find the right path for my characters.
 
Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?
 
(Carol) Other than seeing clients, I love to read, to eat cheesecake(when I allow myself this treat) and to travel to big cities! My husband and I love visiting NYC! He sometimes teases me that he wants to move to an empty corn field somewhere and loves my immediate refusal to follow.
 
I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?
 
(Carol) Those closest to me know I write, but most aren’t readers. Only my daughters routinely dive into books. Warms my heart.
 
Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.
 
(Carol) Wow! Narrowing it to ten will be difficult. I recently love Cherrie Lynn, Maisey Yates, Kristen Ashley and Tammy Faulkner. Kathern Shaw (a critique partner) always amuses me. I really enjoy Kristan Higgins, Meg Cabot and Jill Shalvis. Classic favorites are Georgette Heyer and Mary Stewart.
 
If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?
 
(Carol) I’d love to see one of Georgette Heyer’s detective novels(which always include a romance!) like “Why Shoot A Butler?”
 
Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.
 
(Carol) I’m finishing the Swaggered, 3rd book in my new Blue Collar Boys series. Smooched will launch in early November, 2015! I’m very excited about these sexy guys!

Book Summary

Author Showcase/Interview and Review of “The Case of the Bygone Brother” – Diane Burton

1.    
Welcome, Diane Burton. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?
 
(Diane) My husband and I live in West Michigan, close to the Lake Michigan shoreline. We have two grown children and three grandchildren. I write action/adventure and romance in various sub-genres: science fiction romance, romantic suspense, and cozy mysteries. When my children were getting ready for college, I decided it was my turn to do something for myself. Since I’m an avid reader, I thought it was time to write down those stories that were always running around in my head. It took ten years for my first book to be published then another ten for the next one. Since 2011, six more books have been published.
 
      Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.
 
(Diane) Good question. If I’m stuck on one story, I’ll work on another. I usually have more than one story going at a time. By stepping away from the one giving me fits, I can go back to it more relaxed. I also think about the story before drifting off to sleep. Somehow, the problem works itself out during sleep.

(Diane) I’m retired from a job outside the home, so my favorite thing to do is play with my grandchildren. I like to read and watch movies. As much as I like to garden, bad knees make it difficult. Now I’m more of a “sidewalk” supervisor to my husband who puts a lot of effort into “my” garden. I also like to quilt. Time is my enemy, though, so I haven’t been quilting much. Recently, I hauled out my sewing machine to make clothes for my granddaughter and for her American Girl doll. We moved two years ago (for the last time!). I’m still trying to find places for our belongings.
 
4.  I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?
 
(Diane) I know what you mean. At first, I was embarrassed to say I was a writer. The inevitable question was “are you published?” and I’d have to say no. Then I would respond “not yet.” Now I’m proud to say I’m a writer. And, yes, I am published. My family is very proud of my accomplishments and like to tell others. My oldest grandchildren (5½ and 8) know I’m a writer. They also know they have to grow up before they can read my books. However, we do write stories together. They tell me what to type then we print it out and they illustrate. They have great imaginations.
 
5.  Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.
 
(Diane) Wow. Ten? Usually, I have to limit it to one or two, which is so difficult.

(Diane) My first mystery, THE CASE OF THE BYGONE BROTHER. I’d cast Katherine Heigl as PI Alex O’Hara. For Nick Palzetti, I’d cast Bradley Cooper.

(Diane) LOL Nothing secret about it. I’m working on the 2nd Alex O’Hara book, THE CASE OF THE
FABULOUS FIANCE. Alex is a PI in a small Lake Michigan resort town. She’s up to her ears in trouble again. It’s in the revision stage right now. Percolating in the back of my head is the 4th book in my sci-fi romance Outer Rim series THE SPY.

The Case of the Bygone Brother is the only Alex O’Hara book currently available. And One Red Shoe is a standalone.

I love detective stories and especially when it’s a woman in the sleuth role. What can I say…us chicks have to stick together. 🙂
 
This story wasn’t set back in the 20’s or 40’s but it had the vibe of those decades. Case in point: the usage of the word “dame” and some of the lingo. Ex. “Another fine mess you’ve gotten me into.”
 
Yes, when I read this, I didn’t visualize it in technicolor. No, in my mind, this story was classic black and white. 
 
As with the classics from the time periods above, this story had tons of mystery, comedy, sexual tension, and a big DUN-DUN-DUUUUN!!!
 
Yeah, as you can tell, I totally dug this detective story and want to find out where Nick and Alex go from here. I’m sure you will too after reading it. 🙂
