Grandma Must Die by Maureen L. Bonatch (Book Review)

Author: Maureen L. Bonatch
Series: A Touch of Magic Series, Book 1
Genres: Paranormal Romance, Science Fiction & Fantasy

Ā
Ā
Carman has worn out more towns and last names than impractical shoes protecting the secret of her magic blood. But when a friend goes missing, and another is infected with a deadly spell, Carman must choose. Expose her magic blood by curing the spell—or stop the infection from spreading by killing the source…the grandmother.

Magic bounty hunter Dylan has scoured libraries of banned magic paraphernalia seeking a method to distinguish genuine witches from impersonators. He suspects unorthodox librarian Carman might hold this information tighter than the hair he’s dying to unleash from her bun. With a past as hidden as his sleeve of tattoos, Dylan discovers he’s been used to gain Carman’s trust and their passion risks more than mixing mortals and magic.

Ā
Ā

…once she’d started Carman couldn’t stop,

the book beckoned. Pressing its spine against her palm, begging her to search within the pages to find the answers she’d unconsciously sought her entire life. As she lifted the book, her scalp tingled and her hair elevated like a halo.

ā€œWhoa.ā€ Dylan shielded himself with his hands. ā€œPut it back, slowly, because this is reminding me too much of the incident with the chest. Having my apartment blown up from magic isn’t covered in my rent.ā€

The plastic evaporated in a puff of smoke in Carman’s hands and the book unsealed with a sigh. She smiled, the welcoming warmth emanating from within its pages against her palms. Why had Mother kept her from this? This is what she’d been waiting for.

As curiosity overtook his common sense, she detected Dylan’s cautious approach. He stood close enough to peer over her shoulder into her book, but far enough away to avoid touching her.

After the shockwave the last time their skin met, he probably worried he’d ruin another pair of pants. Carman closed her eyes, absorbing the power from the book. The delicious feeling evoked a sensation like melting chocolate, sweet and satisfying.

ā€œI remember hearing about her, Esmeralda Wrath. I wonder if this was her book?ā€ Dylan’s warm breath caressed her shoulder.

Carman opened her eyes and examined the page. To stare right at a photo of the most powerful witch of all time…her grandmother.

I want to start off this review discussing the basement under the library. The area, which housed magicalĀ artifacts, reminded me of two great shows — Warehouse 13 and TheĀ Librarians. The basement was truly a wonderland for the magically gifted humans. Heck, it’s pretty impressive for the “normal” folks, too.Ā
Ā
Speaking of normal folks, I was glad Maureen finally enlightened me what the heck an m ‘n’ m was on page 165 (in paperback). I knew she wasn’t referring to the sweet treat and was pleased to learn it stood for magic mimiker. With that bit of knowledge tucked away, the previous passages made more sense and proved to be more enjoyable.Ā
Ā
All in all, this story was cute. I wasn’t blown away by it, but I also wasn’t bored out of my mind either.Ā
Ā
Would I recommend it to others? Sure. I definitely think many readers will find this witchy tale most entertaining.Ā
Ā
Now with that said, I’m off to watch The Librarians.Ā
Ā
(Update: It was pointed out to me by Sophia Kimble (visitor – see comments below) that Maureen actually stated what an m ‘n’ m was on page 68. I want readers to have accurate information, so I felt this revelation needed to be shared. Sorry for any confusion I might’ve caused.)

Author Showcase / Interview – Katie Oliver

Ā
1. Welcome, Katie Oliver. For those who might not beĀ familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little aboutĀ yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?
Ā
(Katie) I’d be happy to introduce myself toĀ your readers. My name is Katie Oliver and I’m currently a writer for CarinaĀ UK/Harper Collins.
Ā
I realized my dream of gettingĀ published a little late in the game. Like a lot of women, life got in the way –
love, marriage, kids – and there was a full-time job to contend with as well. Ā But with the kids finally grown and flown fromĀ the nest, I knew it was time to quit dreaming of ā€˜someday’ and get seriousĀ about writing.
Ā
In 2011 I began jotting down some storyĀ ideas on a legal pad. The US economy was tanking and ā€˜austerity’ was the new buzzwordĀ in England. Businesses closed on a daily basis, department stores among them;Ā at the same time, Gordon Ramsey’s ā€˜Kitchen Nightmares’ was a wildly popularĀ television program.
Ā
Putting the two concepts together, itĀ got me to thinking…what if a very old, family-owned British department store isĀ facing closure? What if a sharp business consultant is brought in to whipĀ things into shape? And what if the very spoilt daughter of the currentĀ department store owner butts heads with said austerity-minded consultant?
Ā
I knew as I rapidly filled up notebooksĀ and my laptop screen with words that I was on to something. Prada and Prejudice was the result, andĀ a year later it became my first – and thus far my best selling – book.
Ā
2. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.
Ā
(Katie) All writers hit that dreaded wall now and then. I think thatĀ when your creative muse fails, you need to give yourself a break from writing.Ā Go and watch TV. Go for a walk. Eat a sandwich. Anything that’ll get you outĀ and away from your laptop is good. Oddly enough, I get some of my best writingĀ epiphanies while I’m in the shower, or walking on the treadmill. Go figure. ButĀ it works…because it gives your brainĀ a much-needed break and a change of scenery.
Ā
3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?
Ā
(Katie)Ā Darling, my life is a non-stop glitzy, glam party! At least,Ā in my head it is…
Ā
Seriously, though, when I’m not writing? I’m doing boringĀ things like laundry, or grocery shopping, spending way too much time in the stationery aisle, or reading cookbooks forĀ pleasure. (Don’t judge – it’s fun. I don’t cook anything, I just look at theĀ recipes and say, ā€˜someday, I will make this.’ My husband and I both know this
for the lie that it is.)
Ā
4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/careerĀ a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?
Ā
(Katie)Ā Oh yes, my family knows all about my writing career by now,Ā in tireless detail.Ā  They’re proud of me,
but also a little puzzled. They don’t quite know what to make of having ā€˜aĀ writer’ in the family. I suspect they think I sit home all day and watch game showsĀ and soap operas while quaffing diet soda and potato chips. I swear, I really am writing, you guys!
Ā
They always know when I’m on a deadline, though, because IĀ disappear into my office and become more antisocial than Greta Garbo.Ā Nonetheless, they’re a pretty understanding bunch, on the whole. I love ā€˜em.
Ā
5. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.
Ā
(Katie)Ā This is a tough one! Let’s have a stab at it.
Ā
1. Charlotte Brontƫ. Jane Eyre. Enough said.
2. Ā Jane Austen. PrideĀ and Prejudice. A perfect book.
3. Ā James Lee Burke. Lyrical, gritty, hauntingĀ stuff.
4.Ā Sarah Waters. The Little Stranger. Classic spooky tale.
5.Ā Ā Sadie Jones. TheUninvited Guests. A ghost story you won’t forget.
6.Ā Helen Fielding. Bridget Jones’s Diary. Unrivalled romantic comedy.
7.Ā Mary Kay Andrews. Her books are a Southern hoot.
8.Ā Marian Keyes. The Mystery of Mercy Close. A funny, moving book.
9.Ā Paul Torday. SalmonFishing in the Yemen. A truly gifted writer.
10. AnneĀ Rivers Siddons. Downtown. A gem set in the 1960s.
Ā
6. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?
Ā
(Katie)Ā Well, I could lie and be nice and say I’d choose someoneĀ else’s book…but honestly? I’d love to see PradaĀ and Prejudice make the big screen one day. Or even the little screen. I’dĀ cast Felicity Jones as Natalie Dashwood and either Gerard Butler or JamesĀ McAvoy as Rhys Gordon. (I don’t want much, do I?)
Ā
Ā
Ā

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

Ā
(Katie)Ā And the check’s in the mail, right? Lol.
Ā
I’ve written two romantic ā€˜dramedy’ books – one finished,Ā one half finished – the first set in Baltimore and the second in New York. IĀ had to put them aside to write, edit, and promote the Dating Mr Darcy andĀ Marrying Mr Darcy series for Carina UK, and now, for my upcoming ā€œJane AustenĀ Factorā€ series coming in January 2016.
Ā
The new books are re-imaginings of three beloved AustenĀ novels, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. My modern-day retellings are titled What Would Lizzy Bennet Do?, The Trouble With Emma, andĀ Who Needs Mr Willoughby? Carina’s artĀ department came up with gorgeous pop art covers based on vintage designs. IĀ absolutely love them.
Ā
That said, I’m itching to get back to my American manuscriptsĀ and hope to have three books completed by early next year.
Ā
Ā
Ā

When your name is Lizzy Bennet, and the object of your affections just happens to have the surname Darcy, it seems fitting that life should imitate art, and you should end up together – right?

So when a film crew arrive to shoot Pride and Prejudice at the Darcy estate next door to the Bennet home, and Hugh Darcy arrives home after eight years away, Lizzy knows that their time has finally come. Until, that is, he introduces her to Holly – his fiancĆ©e…

What is Lizzy to do? It can’t hurt that Holly knows nothing about country life, and that her ex-boyfriend and film star Ciaran Duncan just happens to be the main star of the new movie. And it’s clear that Lady Darcy does not approve of Holly either. Lizzy knows Holly isn’t right for Hugh, but can she make him see that and get her Austen ending after all?

Ā
8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?
Ā
(Katie)Ā My ebooks are available online at Amazon, Google Play, Kobo,Ā Apple, and all major US/UK digital retailers. Prada and Prejudice is also available in trade paperback.
Ā
Ideally, readers should start with the Dating Mr DarcyĀ series – Prada and Prejudice, Love and Liability, and Mansfield Lark – and then move on to theĀ Marrying Mr Darcy series (And the BrideĀ Wore Prada, Love, Lies, andĀ Louboutins, and Manolos in Manhattan).Ā But they can be read as stand-alone books as well.
Ā
9. Would you please share how your present and future fansĀ can contact you?
Ā
(Katie)Ā Gladly! Visit my website at www.katieoliver.com/ko/blog or:
Ā
Follow me on Twitter (@katieoliver01)
Ā
10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do youĀ have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.
Ā
(Katie)Ā Thank you, Kameron!
Ā
It’s been a whirlwind and slightly unorthodox trip fromĀ unpublished to published writer. It involved lots of hard work, some sacrificeĀ (TV shows? What TV shows?), and the discipline to meet deadlines head-on and ā€˜getĀ ā€˜er done.’ When Carina UK bought my first three books I was still working fullĀ time; I had a lot to learn and had toĀ find a way to make it all work. Somehow, I did.
Ā
And you know what? I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.Ā Thanks so much for having me over…great questions, I’ve enjoyed it! Hope youĀ have, too.
Ā
Ā
(Kameron) Katie, I absolutely adored your book covers above. They came across as retro/old school which happens to be my favorite form of art. I’m sure others will find them quite charming, too. With that said, ladies and gents it’s time to hear from you. Ask a question, say hello, rave about her…… Just leave us a comment! šŸ™‚

Forget Me Not by Maureen L. Bonatch (Book Review)

Publication Year: 2016

The car accident totaled Sabrina Post’s convertible and reinvented her memories. She can’t recall dumping Cole Dawson ten years ago. What her new clairvoyant visions tell Sabrina is he’s her husband. Any practical girl would question her sanity. But if Sabrina wants to make this imaginary future a reality, she’ll have to regain Cole’s trust and eliminate her rival, the coffee shop waitress who’s pegged Cole as husband #4. To prove she’s foreseen their destiny, Sabrina stirs Cole’s interest by revealing specifics about him she couldn’t have otherwise known. Unfortunately, the one detail he vividly remembers is the pain when she left him and their “rinky-dink” town in her rearview mirror.
If Cole can’t believe she’s a changed woman, can Sabrina accept the only second chance she has at love exists in her memories?

Ā
Ā
Excerpt
Ā
The boxes of candy hearts Julie forgot spilled across the floor.Ā

Cole hunkered down and gathered the papers. His mouth formed a hard line as he glanced at Sabrina’s leave paperwork with the end date prominently circled. He replaced it on the table under the keys.

ā€œNo really, I can do it. You stay, Cole. I’ll be right back.ā€ Sabrina caught her reflection in the mirror on the wall. The quest for a coat resulted in her hair looking as if she’d stuck her finger into an electrical outlet. Her appearance matched her desperation. She ran her hands over her head, but the static filled strands resisted smoothing.

ā€œI need to check on Dad anyway, and it’s on my way. I’ll take Josie.ā€ Cole extended his elbow, and Josie latched on like a lifeline, her fingers digging into the leather of his jacket. She skittered across a few of the remaining candies, crushing Be Mine and Love Me on the floor. ā€œThanks again for dinner, Marge.ā€

ā€œCole wait.ā€ Despair leaked into Sabrina’s plea.
He glanced toward the papers on the table and sighed. ā€œI waited for years, Rena. It’s you who waited too long.ā€

As the door closed behind him, so did the future with Cole that she’d imagined. Her shoulders fell. She knelt to collect the candy hearts scattered on the floor. Forget Me Not and Hug Me taunted her with their cheerful words. Lacking a garbage bag, she shoved a handful of the candies into her jacket pocket. Several hearts were trodden into tiny pieces, like her own.Ā

Ā
Many events can alter a person’s views on life; make them reevaluate what’s important. Sabrina’s wreck was the wake-up call she desperately needed. With the head injury, she gained insight into the future and realized love is more important than money.Ā
Ā
Luckily for her, she was given a second chance —- in life and in love.Ā
Ā
For me, Cole and Sabrina’s short story can be described in one word — SWEET — much like the sweetheart candies that brought them together, again.
Ā
HEA, but you already knew that. Hello, it’s a love story and centers around Valentine’s Day so anything less would be scoffed at. šŸ™‚
