BREAK OUT by Nina Croft (Book Review)

The year is 3048, Earth is no longer habitable, and man has fled to the stars where they’ve discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Unfortunately, the radioactive mineral is exorbitantly expensive and only available to a select few. A new class comprised of the super rich and immortal soon evolves. The Collective, as they’re called, rule the universe.

Two-thousand-year-old Ricardo Sanchez, vampire and rogue pilot of the space cruiser, El Cazador, can’t resist two things: gorgeous women and impossible jobs. When beautiful Skylar Rossaria approaches him to break a prisoner out of the Collective’s maximum security prison on Trakis One, Rico jumps at the chance. Being hunted by the Collective has never been so dangerous–or so fun!

Review

If you love shows like Firefly and Star Trek, then you’ll love this story. It has the feel of that show with the added bonus of having a sexy vampire as part of the rogue team.

In fact, the whole team is unique with their own skill set.

Speaking of the team, I enjoyed how they worked together. They might not claim to be a family but the “family feel” came through anyways.

As for the flow of the story, I did find myself growing bored with some sections. If it wasn’t for the interactions between Rico and Skylar, I’m not sure if I would’ve kept reading the science fiction/romance novel.

Since I never knew what trick he would pull next, I kept tuning back into the show.

Great job, Nina, for creating a character that keeps the reader coming back for more.

Immortal by J.R. Ward (Book Review)

October 7, 2014

From J.R. Ward, the #1 New York Times bestselling author who has kept readers on the edge of their seats with her phenomenal Fallen Angels novels, comes one of the most heart-stirring and eagerly anticipated events in that acclaimed series.

This is a world where sin and salvation collide. This is a world where a cynical fallen angel struggles with the seven deadly sins and seven chosen souls. With the spellbinding Immortal, the riveting series that “changed the face of paranormal romance” comes to an epic close as mankind’s reluctant savior struggles with his greatest challenge yet…time, and hearts, will tell.

Angels, demons, a battle to save all mankind from the throes of hell. Man, does this sound like a plot from Supernatural or what? Yes, I mean that in a good way because I love, love, love the show! *smiles*

Ward rounded up the series pretty damn well (Yes, folks, I read this was the end.) She made sure many people received their HEA with some surprising returns with a couple old favorites of ours. And that’s all the spoilers you’ll be getting from me. *grins*

Now as I stated above, she wrapped up the series very well BUT there was a development at the end which I assumed meant a couple of angels will be sticking around for a wee bit longer. Only time will tell what Ward has planned for these fellas. Betcha wanna know who I’m speaking of, don’t you?

If she doesn’t follow through with the teaser plot and leaves this unsettled, I will be highly disappointed. You all know how people hate when a show gets cancelled and the questions –  Who was shot? Who was the culprit? Did they survive? – gets left unanswered.

Now don’t read that much into those examples above. I’m not suggesting anyone was shot, left fighting for their life.

Interest peaked yet? Even a little? If you said yes, then my job here is done. Happy reading.

Son of No One by Sherrilyn Kenyon (Book Review)

Original Publication Date: September 02, 2014

It’s not easy being life’s own personal joke, but Josette Landry has made an unstable peace with the beast. Completely down on her luck, Josette takes a job with a local paranormal group as a photographer and camerawoman. Yeah, they’re even crazier than she is. The only paranormal thing she believes in is the miracle that keeps her rusted out hoopty running. But when something truly evil is released into the world, they are forced to call in reinforcement.

From the moment Josette meets Cadegan, she knows something about him isn’t quite right. Mysterious and armed with lethal sarcasm, he seems a lot older than his age.

Centuries ago, Cadegan was viciously betrayed into an immortal prison by the only person he’d ever trusted. Forced against his will to do good, he hates everything in life. All he wants is a way out. But for the damned there is only eternal suffering. And yet there is something about Josette that intrigues him. Something he can’t seem to fight and the last time he felt this way about a woman, it cost him everything.

He knows he has to stay away from her, but the unleashed demon is hellbent on consuming her soul. If one more innocent is taken, he will be sent back to an unimaginable prison that makes his current hell look like paradise. But how can he keep her safe when his being with her is the greatest threat of all?

It’s been a while since I have thoroughly enjoyed a Dark-Hunter novel. I’ll admit, her last couple have faltered (IMHO). But this one……totally – absolutely – no doubt about it – ROCKED!

Josette soothing a dragon with baby talk ——> cute as hell.
The body swapping sections ——> I snorted several times. Man, I want to speak more on this but I’ll refrain. You must read it for yourself. Trust me, you will be howling with laughter.

Oh let’s not forget Thorn is featured in this story and in a mega way. Yeah people, SK dropped hints about him and I can’t wait for him to get his own story.

Dark Skye by Kresley Cole (Book Review)

ETERNAL OBSESSION

As a boy, Thronos, prince of Skye Hall, loved Lanthe, a mischievous Sorceri girl who made him question everything about his Vrekener clan. But when the two got caught in the middle of their families’ war, tragedy struck, leaving Thronos and Lanthe bitter enemies. Though centuries have passed, nothing can cool his seething need for the beautiful enchantress who scarred his body—and left an even deeper impression on his soul.

ENDLESS YEARNING

Lanthe, a once-formidable sorceress struggling to reclaim her gifts, searches for love and acceptance with all the wrong immortal suitors. But she’s never forgotten Thronos, the magnificent silver-eyed boy who protected her until she was ripped from the shelter of his arms. One harrowing night changed everything between them. Now he’s a notorious warlord with a blood vendetta against Lanthe, hunting her relentlessly.

CAN THE HEAT OF DESIRE BURN BRIGHTER THAN VENGEANCE?

With their families locked in conflict and battles raging all around them, will Thronos and Lanthe succumb to the brutal chaos that threatens everything they cherish? Or will the fragile bond they formed so long ago spark a passion strong enough to withstand even the darkest doubts?

I’ve been a fan of the IAD series since I read A Hunger Like No Other

Why?

Kresley can write a scene where you feel immersed in the battle with the hero and heroine. However with that said, I found the first half of this installment slower than the other fourteen. Around the midway point, Nix showed up and things got interesting. Gotta love that  soothsayer, she knows how to breathe life into a situation.

Despite my ‘eh’ feelings for the first couple hundred pages, I did enjoy Thronos and Lanthe’s story. There was passion, sweet moments, scenes filled with anguish and of course a HEA. Everything synonymous with a Kresley story.

Born of Fury by Sherrilyn Kenyon (Book Review)

Original Publication Date: July 01, 2014
Setting: Ichidian Universe

The war is on…

Counted among the fiercest Andarion warriors ever born, Hauk is one of the five founding members of the Sentella- an organization that has declared war on the League that rules the Ichidian universe with an iron fist and terrifies it with an army of well-trained assassins. Hauk’s enemies are legion, but he fears nothing and no one. He will do whatever it takes to survive and protect his Sentella brethren.
Sumi Antaxas is one of the best assassins the League has ever trained. In her world, failure is not an option and she has never met a target she couldn’t execute. So when she’s assigned Hauk, she believes it’ll be a quick and easy mission.
But nothing is ever as simple as it seems, and Hauk is far better…

Sherrilyn, once again, had me hating some characters and loving others. And if you read the book yet, you know Dariana is a real piece of work. She’s a cold-hearted bitch and a lousy mother. If you haven’t read the latest installment yet, believe me… you’ll be agreeing with my assessment of her for sure once you do. Bank on it!

Hauk -no male deserved love and affection more than him. I liked him before. Now, I love him. His loyalty to his friends and family is admirable.
Oh, let me mention how sweet him and little Kalea were together. She was just a doll and I cracked up during their interactions.
(No spoilers who she is to him)

Darice and Hauk – Despite how much grief and snide comments Darice threw his way, he always embraced the young male. Darice standing up for Hauk (finally) was one of my favorite scenes. He sure grew up in this book and became the man I knew he could be. Way to go, Darice!

Sumi – She’s a woman not to trifle with. Basically, the perfect woman for Hauk!

For the rest of Hauk”s family, you can’t go wrong with entertainment when Syn, Maris, Darling, Nyk, and Hauk get together. So many comedic moments! Love it and I loved this book!
