Author Showcase / Interview – Katie Oliver

1. Welcome, Katie Oliver. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(Katie) I’d be happy to introduce myself to your readers. My name is Katie Oliver and I’m currently a writer for Carina UK/Harper Collins.

I realized my dream of getting published a little late in the game. Like a lot of women, life got in the way –
love, marriage, kids – and there was a full-time job to contend with as well.  But with the kids finally grown and flown from the nest, I knew it was time to quit dreaming of ‘someday’ and get serious about writing.

In 2011 I began jotting down some story ideas on a legal pad. The US economy was tanking and ‘austerity’ was the new buzzword in England. Businesses closed on a daily basis, department stores among them; at the same time, Gordon Ramsey’s ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ was a wildly popular television program.

Putting the two concepts together, it got me to thinking…what if a very old, family-owned British department store is facing closure? What if a sharp business consultant is brought in to whip things into shape? And what if the very spoilt daughter of the current department store owner butts heads with said austerity-minded consultant?

I knew as I rapidly filled up notebooks and my laptop screen with words that I was on to something. Prada and Prejudice was the result, and a year later it became my first – and thus far my best selling – book.

2. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(Katie) All writers hit that dreaded wall now and then. I think that when your creative muse fails, you need to give yourself a break from writing. Go and watch TV. Go for a walk. Eat a sandwich. Anything that’ll get you out and away from your laptop is good. Oddly enough, I get some of my best writing epiphanies while I’m in the shower, or walking on the treadmill. Go figure. But it works…because it gives your brain a much-needed break and a change of scenery.

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(Katie) Darling, my life is a non-stop glitzy, glam party! At least, in my head it is…

Seriously, though, when I’m not writing? I’m doing boring things like laundry, or grocery shopping, spending way too much time in the stationery aisle, or reading cookbooks for pleasure. (Don’t judge – it’s fun. I don’t cook anything, I just look at the recipes and say, ‘someday, I will make this.’ My husband and I both know this
for the lie that it is.)

4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Katie) Oh yes, my family knows all about my writing career by now, in tireless detail.  They’re proud of me,
but also a little puzzled. They don’t quite know what to make of having ‘a writer’ in the family. I suspect they think I sit home all day and watch game shows and soap operas while quaffing diet soda and potato chips. I swear, I really am writing, you guys!

They always know when I’m on a deadline, though, because I disappear into my office and become more antisocial than Greta Garbo. Nonetheless, they’re a pretty understanding bunch, on the whole. I love ‘em.

5. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(Katie) This is a tough one! Let’s have a stab at it.

1. Charlotte Brontë. Jane Eyre. Enough said.
2.  Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice. A perfect book.
3.  James Lee Burke. Lyrical, gritty, haunting stuff.
4. Sarah Waters. The Little Stranger. Classic spooky tale.
5.  Sadie Jones. TheUninvited Guests. A ghost story you won’t forget.
6. Helen Fielding. Bridget Jones’s Diary. Unrivalled romantic comedy.
7. Mary Kay Andrews. Her books are a Southern hoot.
8. Marian Keyes. The Mystery of Mercy Close. A funny, moving book.
9. Paul Torday. SalmonFishing in the Yemen. A truly gifted writer.
10. Anne Rivers Siddons. Downtown. A gem set in the 1960s.

6. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(Katie) Well, I could lie and be nice and say I’d choose someone else’s book…but honestly? I’d love to see Prada and Prejudice make the big screen one day. Or even the little screen. I’d cast Felicity Jones as Natalie Dashwood and either Gerard Butler or James McAvoy as Rhys Gordon. (I don’t want much, do I?)

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(Katie) And the check’s in the mail, right? Lol.

I’ve written two romantic ‘dramedy’ books – one finished, one half finished – the first set in Baltimore and the second in New York. I had to put them aside to write, edit, and promote the Dating Mr Darcy and Marrying Mr Darcy series for Carina UK, and now, for my upcoming “Jane Austen Factor” series coming in January 2016.

The new books are re-imaginings of three beloved Austen novels, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. My modern-day retellings are titled What Would Lizzy Bennet Do?, The Trouble With Emma, and Who Needs Mr Willoughby? Carina’s art department came up with gorgeous pop art covers based on vintage designs. I absolutely love them.

That said, I’m itching to get back to my American manuscripts and hope to have three books completed by early next year.

When your name is Lizzy Bennet, and the object of your affections just happens to have the surname Darcy, it seems fitting that life should imitate art, and you should end up together – right?

So when a film crew arrive to shoot Pride and Prejudice at the Darcy estate next door to the Bennet home, and Hugh Darcy arrives home after eight years away, Lizzy knows that their time has finally come. Until, that is, he introduces her to Holly – his fiancée…

What is Lizzy to do? It can’t hurt that Holly knows nothing about country life, and that her ex-boyfriend and film star Ciaran Duncan just happens to be the main star of the new movie. And it’s clear that Lady Darcy does not approve of Holly either. Lizzy knows Holly isn’t right for Hugh, but can she make him see that and get her Austen ending after all?

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(Katie) My ebooks are available online at Amazon, Google Play, Kobo, Apple, and all major US/UK digital retailers. Prada and Prejudice is also available in trade paperback.

Ideally, readers should start with the Dating Mr Darcy series – Prada and Prejudice, Love and Liability, and Mansfield Lark – and then move on to the Marrying Mr Darcy series (And the Bride Wore Prada, Love, Lies, and Louboutins, and Manolos in Manhattan). But they can be read as stand-alone books as well.

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(Katie) Gladly! Visit my website at www.katieoliver.com/ko/blog or:

Follow me on Twitter (@katieoliver01)

10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(Katie) Thank you, Kameron!

It’s been a whirlwind and slightly unorthodox trip from unpublished to published writer. It involved lots of hard work, some sacrifice (TV shows? What TV shows?), and the discipline to meet deadlines head-on and ‘get ‘er done.’ When Carina UK bought my first three books I was still working full time; I had a lot to learn and had to find a way to make it all work. Somehow, I did.

And you know what? I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. Thanks so much for having me over…great questions, I’ve enjoyed it! Hope you have, too.

(Kameron) Katie, I absolutely adored your book covers above. They came across as retro/old school which happens to be my favorite form of art. I’m sure others will find them quite charming, too. With that said, ladies and gents it’s time to hear from you. Ask a question, say hello, rave about her…… Just leave us a comment! 🙂

Forget Me Not by Maureen L. Bonatch (Book Review)

Publication Year: 2016

The car accident totaled Sabrina Post’s convertible and reinvented her memories. She can’t recall dumping Cole Dawson ten years ago. What her new clairvoyant visions tell Sabrina is he’s her husband. Any practical girl would question her sanity. But if Sabrina wants to make this imaginary future a reality, she’ll have to regain Cole’s trust and eliminate her rival, the coffee shop waitress who’s pegged Cole as husband #4. To prove she’s foreseen their destiny, Sabrina stirs Cole’s interest by revealing specifics about him she couldn’t have otherwise known. Unfortunately, the one detail he vividly remembers is the pain when she left him and their “rinky-dink” town in her rearview mirror.
If Cole can’t believe she’s a changed woman, can Sabrina accept the only second chance she has at love exists in her memories?

Excerpt

The boxes of candy hearts Julie forgot spilled across the floor.

Cole hunkered down and gathered the papers. His mouth formed a hard line as he glanced at Sabrina’s leave paperwork with the end date prominently circled. He replaced it on the table under the keys.

“No really, I can do it. You stay, Cole. I’ll be right back.” Sabrina caught her reflection in the mirror on the wall. The quest for a coat resulted in her hair looking as if she’d stuck her finger into an electrical outlet. Her appearance matched her desperation. She ran her hands over her head, but the static filled strands resisted smoothing.

“I need to check on Dad anyway, and it’s on my way. I’ll take Josie.” Cole extended his elbow, and Josie latched on like a lifeline, her fingers digging into the leather of his jacket. She skittered across a few of the remaining candies, crushing Be Mine and Love Me on the floor. “Thanks again for dinner, Marge.”

“Cole wait.” Despair leaked into Sabrina’s plea.
He glanced toward the papers on the table and sighed. “I waited for years, Rena. It’s you who waited too long.”

As the door closed behind him, so did the future with Cole that she’d imagined. Her shoulders fell. She knelt to collect the candy hearts scattered on the floor. Forget Me Not and Hug Me taunted her with their cheerful words. Lacking a garbage bag, she shoved a handful of the candies into her jacket pocket. Several hearts were trodden into tiny pieces, like her own.

Many events can alter a person’s views on life; make them reevaluate what’s important. Sabrina’s wreck was the wake-up call she desperately needed. With the head injury, she gained insight into the future and realized love is more important than money.

Luckily for her, she was given a second chance —- in life and in love.

For me, Cole and Sabrina’s short story can be described in one word — SWEET — much like the sweetheart candies that brought them together, again.

HEA, but you already knew that. Hello, it’s a love story and centers around Valentine’s Day so anything less would be scoffed at. 🙂

In the news, you hear about record artists in the same breath as with sex, drugs, and rock -n- roll. Therefore, it’s no big surprise M.J. featured all the above in this musical love story.

You’ll also find Cassie the target of, not one, but two wackos. Jealousy is a bitch and she learned that the hard way.

The plot centering around the nut-cases was interesting. Not many stories have multiple villains. However, the rest of the story was just ok. I didn’t like Josh and Cassie so much as a couple. Cassie seemed to fall for him too fast and forgave him too easily.

First, she claims she doesn’t want to be a “one-night stand” or “only one in a pack of a thousand” but she shags him after catching him making out with a woman after a show. Nah, I think I would’ve let him work for my attentions before putting out. Yeah, they had a HEA but still she seemed almost desperate for love.

On a final note: M.J. wrote a catchy song and I’d love to hear a beat behind those lyrics.

Flames of Auriel by Erin Bedford (Book Review)

51at5hbk2kl

When living in a world where the prince isn’t always charming, the princess has a mean right hook, and angels are worshiped like gods, love isn’t always easy to find.

Zoe has never been the lady-like princess she’s read about in fairy-tales, even with her very own handsome prince to sweep her off her feet. She doesn’t know what she dislikes more, his arrogant smirk or the way his grey eyes darken when they fight. Angels help him if he doesn’t keep his hands off the help.

Asher won’t admit it, but he admires the fighting style of his warrior princess. She reminds him of an avenging angel the way her fiery hair whips around her as she takes out her challengers. Dark One help him, but she is as tough an opponent on the battlefield as she is off.

With unknown and unwanted feelings starting to emerge between the two royals, a single goodbye turns into a frantic search for a missing princess. Asher has to find the one woman he never thought he’d miss and keep his kingdom safe from an old enemy. If he fails, the angels may not forgive him this time.

Warning: For mature readers.

“Get out of my way, Asher.”

He placed his arms on either side of her, blocking any chance of an easy escape. She held back a shiver as he brushed his fingers over her cheek so he could tuck her hair behind her ear. Asher was not about to let her ruin their day with her temper.

“Not this time, Zoe.”

Before she could protest, his lips found hers in what she could only describe as the most searing kiss of her life. Unlike the kiss in the hallway, which had been curious and uncertain, not at all what she had expected from him, this one was everything she had expected his kiss would be – relentless and overpowering. She thought about biting him for a second, but instead found herself caught up
in it. She would feel ashamed later at how easy it had been for her to just slide her hands through the curly tendrils of his hair and kiss him in return.

While she had only been kissed by one other person – Garrett – who was always gentle and giving, this kiss was like a battle on its own. Their mouths clashed together as each of them fought for dominance. She found herself moaning into the kiss and forgot for a moment who she was kissing, but eventually they had to end the kiss to breathe. They gaped at the other at the magnitude of what just happened.

Asher recovered first and leaned his forehead against hers. He brushed his fingertips along the curve of her breast, causing a sharp intake from her. He held her gaze with his for a moment and tried to memorize the details of her face in that moment. He noted how her amber eyes had darkened and her face had flushed all the way down to her heaving chest. Asher could not think of a time when she was more beautiful than right then.

“If you want me to stop seeing them I will. Just say the word and I’m yours.”

Zoe’s entire body tensed up at his proposition and for a hot minute she was tempted to say it, but pride would not allow her to give him the satisfaction of knowing how much it affected her.

She leaned her face into his, “What makes you think I care?” She shoved him away and ran as fast as her skirts would allow her back toward the palace.

Asher and Zoe argued more than any couple I have ever met but it was all foreplay. It took a while for me to see this because I had trouble warming up to him — much like her. He was kind of a dick for the first 1/2 of the book. He didn’t hide his indiscretions which made Zoe feel embarrassed, hurt, and rightfully pissed the hell off.

His most douchebag move came about when Garrett entered the scene. Asher became jealous of her bodyguard/companion and rightfully so. Garrett is sweet, charming, a true champion and quite easy on the eyes. Plus, he is her childhood friend. I can see why the green eyed devil made an appearance but the actions Asher took for Zoe to claim him was a dick move — literally. He knew Zoe would come into a certain room so he had a chambermaid giving his “head”the royal treatment to get a reaction out of Zoe. Yeah folks, he actually said that after he claimed his intent wasn’t to hurt her.

Zoe reacted with claw towards the chambermaid but not with him…. Nope, she kissed the daylights out of him. Don’t think many would’ve reacted so kindly. Me included.

It was actions like these that made me chanting for Garrett. Too bad TEAM GARRETT lost. But don’t fret, his future love interest was introduced. Of course, he will have to wait a few years before they can steam the sheets.

Side note: the creation of a potion that can destroy male seed to avoid unwanted pregnancies was highly creative.

The Heart Teaches Best by M.J. Schiller (Book Review)

 51ys-ki1dtl

The call had come in the night before, murder at Phat Jack’s, the newest club in downtown L.A.  When he got there, several cars were already pulled into the parking lot, slanted haphazardly across the entrance, their lights casting blasts of colors onto the surrounding buildings, reminding him of the laser lights bouncing around the dance floor inside.  He scooted under the yellow tape, flashing his badge at the uniforms who were trying to keep the curious onlookers back.  The body of Sydney Essex, the famous author, had been found on the pavement, next to her car, her deep blue eyes wide and unseeing, ligature marks readily-apparent on her slender neck, head tipped at an odd angle.

This book has the making to be on the Lifetime Movie Network (LMN). It had a father with dual families, a murder mystery, a nice twist at the end including the psychopath. The surprise with the nut-job wasn’t a fresh idea; as in, I haven’t seen it done on a criminal show or on a soap opera. However, I do love the “classics” and I think you will like it too.

I also think you’ll enjoy the Sullivan clan. They were a goofy, tight-knit group who has sing-alongs even when it’s not Christmastime. Who does that? Well, besides me and my kids. 🙂

Buy this book. Honestly, I really think you’ll be glad you did.
