Review of "Heart of Darkness" - Lauren Dane

Amazon (Paperback Version)
Book Summary:
Meriel Owen, next in line to control the largest organization of witches in the country, is asked to investigate the owner of a notorious club reportedly siphoning magic from the font of the Clan. It’s a direct violation of the Clan Code of Conduct, but one look at Dominic Bright and Meriel’s willing to make a deal. One taste of the sexually feral outlaw witch, and she’s eager to go further: he’s her bond mate, a legal conduit into the world of Clan witches and their magic.
Playing by the rules isn’t Dominic’s style, but bonding with Meriel—night after explosive night—is. However, Meriel has unwittingly invited someone else into her world: Dominic’s mother, a dangerous and poisonously influential magic addict whose lust for death and power corrupts all she touches. Now her shadow is closing in on Meriel, her Clan, and the man Meriel loves, and it’s casting them all into the inescapable heart of darkness.

After hearing about Lauren's tale-weaving skills for some time now, I decided to give the author's creations a look. I selected the Bound By Magick series because I'm a fan of paranormal romance novels. This story certainly didn't lack in the romance department. Meriel and Dominic couldn't keep their hands off one another. But besides their physical attraction, they connected mentally and magically too which made them a perfect match.

My only complaint about the story - at times I felt like certain sections were rushed. Example, the showdown with Dom's mom. I expected a surprise or two thrown at us, but it never happened. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't written poorly at all. I was simply waiting for the "Holy Hell" moment.

With that said, I will check out the rest of the series.

CHAOS BURNING - Bound By Magick, Book 2
GOING UNDER - Bound By Magick, Book 3
WILD DARKNESS - Bound By Magick, Book 4 (Coming November 2013)

Interview with D.R. Racey

1. Welcome, D.R. Racey. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(D.R.) I have been on active duty in the U.S. Military since 1998 and I am married with three children. I started writing as a hobby in 2008 as a way to spend my free time while off from work. My hobby of writing finally came to fruition in 2012 when I finally published Conflagration, the first book in The Phoenix Blade Trilogy.

2.  All writers fear the dreaded “block”. Please tell us how you handle it.

(D.R.)  I don’t fear the writers block too much. What I do fear is the wife block. My wife lets me know when I start writing a little too often. Don’t get me wrong though. My wife completely supports my writing and has edited one of my novels for me.
I guess the best way to beat the “block” is to make sure you have several works in progress so you can transition between them if you hit a slow spell on the novel you are currently engaged in.

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how to do you spend your time?

(D.R.)  I spend most of my time when I am not writing at work. When I am off work I am either writing or marketing my books using social media. Social media marketing is a beast to try and handle, but it helps get the word out about my novels. Other than writing and marketing, I spend a lot of my time at home with family. I am also always turning over stories in my head to come up with my next big book.

4. I know many writers, such as Dirk and myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(D.R.) Many of my co-workers know I write and some have even purchased some of my novels. I do have one set of books that I write under a pen name that only my wife knows the name of. My typical books are in the fantasy, paranormal, and historical fiction genres. The book under my alternate pen name is definitely erotic so I keep that separate so kids don’t pick up the book and read something they shouldn’t be reading. It is my way of separating my two styles of writing.

5. Will you share with us your all time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(D.R.) My list isn’t that long actually. My favorite author is R.A. Salvatore and is closely followed by Terry Brooks. I am a lover of fantasy novels so if it has elves, dwarves, dragons, or anything that could pop up in a D&D game then I will read it.

6. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love see casted in the parts?

(D.R.) See this is harder to decide but I could see Blood Rites as a movie. It is a paranormal action thriller set in the mountains of North Carolina.
Wow that is kind of hard to answer. There are so many actors and actresses that could play the roles of Daniel, Sara, Makareus, Dana, and Jennifer.

For Daniel I would say Bradley Cooper. He would make a kick ass werewolf, but still be normal enough to play an average guy during the day as a lumber mill worker.

Sara is the beauty of the bunch though and Daniel’s girlfriend. So many visions go through my mind of what she should look like and it becomes a blur. I would have to suggest Victoria Secret model Candice Swanepoel. Have you seen Candice’s eyes? They pull you in like she has put you into a trance. I would like to see her with blonde hair for the movie though.

Makareus would be portrayed by Gerald Butler. He has adapted to so many roles that he could easily portray the role of the lycan pack leader.

Dana is Sara’s friend from Nashville and is kind of flirty and likes to have fun. Dana would be played by Alexandra Daddario from “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” and “Texas Chainsaw 3D”.

Jennifer is Makareus’ newly turned mate and is beautiful but deadly along with having a knack for wrath and vengeance. Let me not forget the fact that as a newer werewolf she desperately craves the taste of fresh flesh and blood. She could only be portrayed correctly by Amanda Seyfried from the movie “In Time”. She seemed innocent but she definitely had a mean streak in her.

The cast would be rounded out with Sara’s parents, Allen and Loraine. Allen would be played by Paul Bettany and Loraine would be portrayed by Kate Beckinsale. I know neither one of them is very old, but Hollywood could make them look a little older and you would still have two super hot stars for Allen and Loraine.

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(D.R.) I am currently working on a novel titled Impasse. Impasse is book three in The Phoenix Blade Trilogy. I can’t give any more detail than that though without spoiling the first two books. Let’s just say that some of the supporting characters in the first two books will have a bigger role.

8. Where can we find your stories and is there a particular reading order?

(D.R.) For the fantasy lovers you want to read The Phoenix Blade Trilogy. Conflagration is book one in the series and takes you into the Realm of Clendorin. Lineage is book two in the series and takes place twenty years after the first book. I wont give any spoilers away here, but there are many characters from the first book in the second book of the series.
For paranormal readers you want to get Blood Rites. As for historical fiction lovers then you want to read the novella War - 8000 Miles From Home.
All of my books can be found on Amazon worldwide in ebook and paperback formats. The ebook versions can also be found on Barnes and Noble and Smashwords. The only exception is Blood Rites where there ebook version is only available from Amazon.

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(D.R.) My fans can connect to me on Twitter at @drraceybooks on Facebook at
They can also follow my blogs at Goodreads and Wordpress.
My official author page is

10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(D.R.) My vision is to write books that people want to read. I will continue to write books in multiple genres to focus on readers or all ages and taste. Reading is something the world needs, but without writers we won’t have anything to read. I urge readers of all ages to support authors in their quest to write the perfect novel for their fans.

There you have it, ladies and gents. I want to again thank D.R. Racey for stopping by and I look forward to the next time we can sit down and chat.

As I read this story, the first thing that popped into my head was the "Lord of the Rings" triology. No readers, that is not a bad thing at all. I personally loved that series as millions of others.

I found D.R. Racey to be an extremely talented artist. I say artist because he painted a mental image of each beast, character, and setting flawlessly which isn't an easy task.  I highly recommend reading Conflagration and look forward to reading your thoughts on it as well.
